Introducing REN To World Class Jazz/ R&B Trumpeter KELLY CRAIG ! FIRST TIME HEARING "HI REN"-Pro Guitarist Reacts Camera work and video editing by Kevin Gillespie. @RenMakesMusic #ren #renreaction
Common Stages of Reaction for the song 'Hi Ren' by Ren: This looks creepy. Pig mask, ha. Guitar sounds nice. Nylon strings. Oh he’s singing. Falsetto. I did not expect that. Will the whole song be like this? Okay, he’s rapping now. Cool. He's good. Has anyone noticed he looks like Tommy Shelby? This guy is scary. Now he seems nice. Oh I see what he’s doing. This is interesting, it's like Eminem or Plan B. This is intense. Time has lost its meaning. The mean guy is a jerk. This is INTENSE! Make it stop, I need to cry a bit. I haven’t blinked or taken a breath in four minutes. OMG THERE GOES THE 4TH WALL!!! How did he know what I was thinking? YES! You tell him Ren. You are a genius! Okay, scary just guy got way scarier. (You didn't know it was the devil, you would have dressed properly.) The hopium has arrived and I am so here for it. 'Loosen the noose on the rope'. ... HOLY SHITBALLS HE CAN SING!!! Damn, he can really sing. OOO-OO-OO-OO-OO-... (your head bobs, tears in your eyes, you get it now) I need some time to be still, wait there's more? He's talking now and peering into my soul. I was not expecting to feel this much. That was the longest nine minutes that has ever passed instantly. (you sit in deafening silence as you contemplate existence) "Good art makes you think about the art, great art makes you think about your life."
I have seen over 1 hundred Hi Ren reaction videos (probably all of them). I don't remember anyone else catching on to the two earings, or the flat 6 connections that your guest has. I think he brings a lot of great insight into the content. Please bring him on for more reactions, especially Ren reactions.
A guest from Black pegasus mentioned the ear rings and also big lamp little lamp and sock up sock down. I do agree this was a great reaction over my head but insightful.
Ren is actually from North Wales, UK but resides in Brighton. And the guy in the pig mask at the start is Blizzpig (Sean Livesey) from the band Evil Blizzard. IF you do a reaction to that band you will see him there. NHe and Ren (Gill) are friends. Ren suffers from Lyme disease which was not diagnosed for 7 years - he had been treated for mental health issues and the drugs the doctors gave him for 7 years screwed up hi mind. He is currently in Canada receiving treatment to try and undo the damage caused.
I was thinking today that in this song, at one point he says that he'll make waves and shake up the world and that's EXACTLY what he's doing. I can't think of another musician/artist in history that is moving people as profoundly as he is.
Hey Christy, yeah Ren is something else, right? Watching how the TMG community has supported each other blows my mind, all coming from different walks of life and uniting to make each other's journeys better.
Your guest was brilliant. Incredible knowledge, easily grasped the concept and had a fascinating level of observation. I enjoyed this so much. Thank you.
I have heard this song so many times ... it just keeps getting better every time I hear it. It kinda transcends time like that ... I even see you head bobbing pretty enthusiastically and I'm sure you've heard it upteen times as well. Kelly seemed intrigued ... check back with him in a few months and see if it hasn't turned into an earworm. LOL I love that Kelly picked up on the devil's interval right away ... smart guy. We talked about that in our first interaction ... Another guy I'd love to have a beer with !!! 🤘🤘
People introducing other people to Ren is my favorite kind of reaction to watch. There is always one person excited knowing what is coming and the other person like wtf is going on right now? Next thing you know, they're captivated like the rest of us. Loved the discussion guys!
Most people can relate to the internal struggle Ren presents, I mean, whatever we each try to achieve in life, there is always that side of our brains criticising, doubting, setting up for failing. Ren really has struck a chord through so many sectors of society, ages, backrounds... I'm a middle age English woman and now I'm suddenly listening to rap! Ren is incredible.
Wow, that is a profound influence to have been the recipient of. I really enjoyed your self jamming session a few weeks back. You certainly know your way around that fret board coupled with a a delicate touch.
Catsandcrafts Imposter Syndrome, your comment reminded me of imposter syndrome which I was swamped with off and on for the first few years after I qualified as a psychotherapist. (25yr now) Though of course Ren is right in it , sitting in that really uncomfortable feeling. It’s an experience I can really relate to Ren. I’m quite surprised when some struggle or and think this is inclusively mental health based, the inner conflicted narratives exist within most I would say. Self evidently the mental health issues are mental health issues. They can add harmful, toxic effects into our internal narratives.
After MG3 dropped, I thought I was done watching reactions to Hi Ren but here I am. It was fun watching the excitement on your face and listening to such insightful comments. Well done.
Yeah I thought the same for myself, but somehow watched a few since MG3. I think it will be a long time before the vicarious joy of witnessing somehow new being brought into the fold loses its sparkle. Nb MG3 was the video that converted one of my siblings who thought Ren was talented but didn't understand my obsession. They reached out before I had a chance to send the link in TMG recovery saying "this is impressive, I can see what you've been on about most of the year, sorry"
nice this is the first time that one speak about the tritone, i'm very impressed, in all the reaction seems that almost no one noticied this, loved that
Hi! I really liked this discussion when you are able to bounce ideas with another person~ Always glad to hear other musician's insight into this song 😊
for those who still don't know Ren's back story : at 17 he contracted Lyme disease and an autoimmune deficiency....was MISdiagnosed as "mentally ill" (explaining his opinion of many doctors and therapists)...given psychotropic meds that wrecked his physical and mental health...may be in treatment the rest of his life....my thoughts : the Pig is a butcher, Ren's opinion of the mental health systems...the discordant vocals and guitar represent his internal chaos, as do the wildly blinking lights..."Truth in a blender, Deceitful Pretender".......
Yeah, my fave is the “I shot the Sherrif” mashup where he’s wearing the red suspenders. That was top notch vocals of a different sort than we usually hear from Ren, mixed with excellent instrumentals by the band, mixed with a little Ren-style rap. 👌
It always makes me smile when I read comments about him in red suspenders because we call them braces and suspenders hold womens stockings up...or mens 😂
@ordinaryvalley I picture him as Tim Curry from The Rocky Horror Picture Show when I read the comments ...god knows why...or what that says about what's floating around in my mind 😄
Hi Michael and Kelly, wow I loved this new style reaction. I know nothing about guitars, video production techniques or music styles. I listened to rock and metal all my life snd the first time I heard a rap song was because of my kids when they were teenager. A song captivates me because of the lyrics and the passion of the artist. I have a huge respect for talented artists like Ren who are able to put in words things that I feel and have in my heart and mind. I am 57 now, I learned to relax and soften too after all the struggles in my life and having to deal with depression myself, Ren obviously talks about me 😁and I can relate a lot. Kelly said he won’t listen to all the Ren albums because he probably will end up depressed. For me it is the opposite, Ren’s music is helping me a lot. He also doesn’t have a Brighton working class accents, he is originally from Wales, that’s probably what Kelly hears. I would love to see him back and analyse some busking performances from The Great Push and song he did with Chinchilla. Oh and I have seen a new side of you too Michael, keep making these reactions, I love it, thank you both and thanks to Mike who donated me a membership to your channel. Forever grateful 🩷
Your insights are most appreciated! Thank you In Kelly’s defense I think he just meant the material was a little heavy for him to want to listen in long chunks….it requires active listening and is hard to sustain….. i thought that’s where he was coming from. He could have worded it better, he’s never done anything like this before. I’m glad you’re softening and relaxing. ✌️ ❤️
I have never heard Kelly play but I know, instinctively by his musical knowledge ( and obviously the people he has played with ) that he must be an outstanding trumpeter. I really enjoyed this reaction Michael. Great stuff brother 🙏
He hasn't got a specific accent imo, though you can tell that he's spent a lot of time in Brighton. My friends from North Wales sound the same as Wirral and South Wirral as theres not much distance between
@@Hannahxx1971 East of Llandudno, along the coast, scouse in the predominant accent. West of Llandudno is more of a mixed bag with Welsh accents seeming to be more prevelent there.
Yo! Almost passed this up when I saw it on my feed since I thought it was from months ago, when you first heard of Ren. Nice intro; you're upping your RU-vid game! Enjoyed your friend's reaction to a song of Ren's I'm still struggling to get all the parts up to tempo on guitar. It's a labor of love for the music, and the inspiration for me to pick up the guitar again after decades of not having the music in me. Thanks to Ren and to your channel for bringing that back for me.
I just came in from work and sitting here right at my fingertips is the lovely surprise of this video! Great idea to show this to someone who shares your knowledge of music. I loved your sneaky intro. Overall the sound quality of your speaking voices and the video were nicely balanced. And the summary at the end was interesting info. But let Kelly know that Hank is a better looking couch companion. 😉
Every time I watch a different reaction to this someone points out something new 😂 The level of detail is absurd, right down to the positioning of his socks! The sock on his left is up high with the small lamp behind and on his right is is low with the tall lamp, so many representation of the two sides!
I really appreciate this reaction because I'm sick of hearing certain people who are only used to hearing major chords say that Ren is playing out of tune 🤣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💕 🪀
Hahaha. Well he does play out of tune a little but in my session years I played some ska punk so I appreciate all the colors!! Kelly also gets it. He plays out of tune at times to create tension. ❤️
@@michaelgoyettemusic I don’t believe he has moved to Canada unless that is a recent change. He is there in recovery but I understood he plans to return to living in the U.K.
I haven't even finished watching your reaction but got this huge grin seeing your smile and apparent giddiness at introducing another person to this masterpiece. Exactly how I feel when I share it with my friends. Thanks!
I live in OK, where we get an average of less than one case of Lyme disease a year. But I've got it now. 🤷♀️ I credit Ren and his raising awareness of Lyme disease for me taking my bite rash seriously and getting my doctor's attention. This song in particular helps me and so many others find some light at the end of the storms. ❤ Loved this reaction, Michael. I'd love to see more like this!
Good that you caught it early! It’s only been in Canada a decade or 2 and Avril Lavigne and Shania Twain were among the first Canadians affected so that brought a lot of attention to it in Canada…..Shania is from so far north that Ticks only showed up there pretty recently Hope you get back to 💯 ASAP! ✌️
@@michaelgoyettemusic Wow, I'd forgotten that Shania Twain got Lyme disease, too. That's right.. 😕 I haven't even been in the woods or fields. I just sit on my front porch a lot, with a view of pastures and woods, and lots of deer. 😬 That's how it got me, I guess. Took doxycycline for a week, but I had a bad reaction to it, so she's switching me to another medication, thank goodness. But I'm just glad I caught it early! The drs were already in the process of trying to treat and diagnose my existing spinal and neurological issues when I got the bite and the rash (which was (also thankfully) miserable enough to feel it, even if I hadn't seen it first). So it's been quite a trip!
Oh how I love people hearing the beautiful talented gifted golden boy that is REN, welcome down the rabbit hole of this genius ❤ He is helping people everyday Love you man❤
And yesterday, without a record deal, without touring (he's in Canada getting [finally] treated for his previously mis & undiagnosed Lyme disease), without marketing, he hit #1 in the UK charts. He's bringing attention to mental illness, suicide & to interesting, unrecognized artists.
I'm not a huge Ren fan, but I think Kelly is good and once he relaxes a bit more he'll be great! He's smart and skilled, so interested to hear his thoughts on things!
@@michaelgoyettemusic not until you mentioned it :) The editing was fine. My only thought was that perhaps the wide shots were making him feel less comfortable? When you do your solo videos, you have one camera angle to be "paranoid" about. I feel he'd do better with a similar setup. Having said that, it does make it feel more intimate if you can both relax into it. Shrug :D. Two pros discussing things is appealing for sure, and I look forward to his honest opinions on things.
Such a great reaction vid! I loved watching you, Michael...reminds me of me, grinning and holding onto excitement waiting to show and share with someone the greatness that is Ren 🤗
nice clear video with a realy crisp sound and I love the rustic backdrop also your mate picking up on Rens Genesis style was realy cool@@michaelgoyettemusic
One of my very most positive, lovely friends from high school. I mean I don't even associate with anyone from high-school. But this guy was the most positive person you'd ever know. He had lime disease. In America. He killed himself. Two years ago.
I thought you’d have learned by now that Ren is from Anglesey, Wales 🏴, but ended up in Brighton in his late teens, following on from music college in Bath. 😉
I can only put so much information in….I know all that but I didn’t want to bog down Kelly with heeps of info not musically related….at least not all at once. 😆 I’ll let him in on a little more detail next time. ✌️
Currently there are about 1500 Lyme Disease per year in England. However, more than 10 years ago it was less than 1000. It is quite rare with those counts even though it sounds like a lot.
This was so interesting to get the professional opinions of musicians and help me understand the things my untrained ear would not know, like certain notes and keys of his voice and the guitar. I think it goes to show even more how much of a poetic and musical genius Ren is. He's really making an impact and touching people from all areas of social classes and professions on a scale I have not seen before.
Over time, because I can't stop watching reactions to this by musicians, I have started paying more attention to the people who "know" already. The anticipation and appreciation is just as good as the dumbfounded "oh shit" reactions.
I have watched a number of reactions to this video. Musician reactions are my favorite. Almost all musicians are entranced before Ren even sings a single word. They see what he's doing and respect it almost instantly.
In the UK doctors just don't treat Lyme disease even though it is on the increase, i know of someone who had a positive test for Lyme disease months ago but they haven't treated it as that, been given drugs for chronic fatigue (like Ren) and inflammatory arthritis and been given a very strong drug that is actually for cancer, this needs addressing
I loved watching this Mike (idk if people call you that but that is what I call a good friend of mine named Michael). Thank you for showing this to a new fan! I know he will check out more and Ren has something for everyone... He is a style-bending chameleon of genres! 20:00 Kelly picked up on the earrings and so much more in one take very impressive! Another thing I still haven't figured out is if you look at 15:09 He also has one high sock and no sock at all on the other foot lol...
