Love this!! You can tell them that "The Lion king " is based off of Hamlet!

I love the idea of using stations in a social construct. I start my English student teaching on Tuesday here in west central Minnesota. Thanks for the video's.

My Senior year English teacher threw out the curriculum and taught us Shakespeare all year long. He also taught entrance exam essays. We would write first thing every day, and then play with Shakespeare for the rest of time. I left his class with only good feelings about Shakespeare, and a beginning of an understanding of the influence Shakespeare has had on our culture and language. I love your approach and enthusiasm! Your kids are so lucky!

Hi Marie, I’m a new viewer to your vlogs but I’ve been listening to your Brave New Teaching podcast almost since it first started coming out. I am a newer teacher (I’ve officially been teaching a little less than 1 1/2 years - I was hired as a mid-year replacement) and I’m so grateful to you and (Amanda, right?) for the variety of topics you discuss, the relatability, the resources (love love love the remote learning time management slideshow and video! I only wish I had discovered it sooner), and the easy banter between you two make me feel like I’m sitting right there with you, discussing everything teaching and high school English Literature. I’ll probably copy/paste most of this comment into an Apple podcasts review, since it seems to be turning into more about the podcast than these videos, haha. But I have been binge watching your channel since I realized that you were one of the teachers from Brave New Teaching, seeing as I can’t wait for more episodes of that new show. One question about these videos: you mention that you get to all of the comments eventually (I have an almost 3-year-old little boy at home with me too, so trust me I get the almost tech disasters that become a daily occurrence while working with a little one at home), but I’m wondering if you respond privately to people’s questions? I only ask because many times I have been interested in your answer but don’t often see one. No judgement if you don’t get to all of the comments, that’s a lot of time! But I just wanted to mention that in case you are responding privately, and let you know that other viewers like myself would love to read your response ☺️ I hope you have an amazing summer and I’ll keep looking for those notifications on my phone! P.S. Brave New World is the novel that changed my view of literature when I first read it in high school; I went from a student who enjoyed English Class and always loved to read, to a lifelong student and lover of literature and not just books as entertainment. So I immediately connected to you and Amanda when I listened to the first episode!

Where did you find the VR viewers? Tech in a classroom activity like that is so hard to snag the interest of students. Do share. Thanks for this inspirational video.

You make teaching sound so fun. What can I do? I am a new teacher and the life is being sucked out of me I feel we have no autonomy to do anything and it's structured. HELLLLPPPP! :)

Hi Chantell, I know your post is 5 months old and I can’t imagine how much more stressed you got after schools closed, but I completely understand how you were feeling because I was feeling similarly at the same time! Ironically, I had a bit too much autonomy (more so with my 11th grade classes than my 10th grade because, unlike my sophomores, they don’t really have any state tests or graduation rates to worry about (unless they didn’t pass the FSA on the first go around). So on one hand I was on a semi-right leash with test prep but not much guidance on the rest of the curriculum and zero guidance or teamwork on my 11th grade curriculum, so I ended up in survival mode most of the year! But I made it through, as I’m sure you did too. And what a first year to start teaching, huh? If we can get through emergency remote learning and a pandemic during our first year and survive to teach another year...well I think we can survive anything. 🤨

+The Caffeinated Classroom Well Mari , For me if this were back when I was an autistic student in high school then it would have caused a conflict between William Shakespeare and Walt Disney . However , if Shakespeare helped you get to where you are at today then stick with it . Keep the dream makers not dream killers . By the way , I like the outfit on you in this video . - Dwight

I'm working with At-Risk Inner City Youth here in Rural Nevada. Any suggestions on which play might appeal to them?

Watched a slideshow about how lines from The Office could summarize every work from Shakespeare. It was AWESOME!! I'll look for the link, you'll love it!

For a follow-up: have you wanted to get involved in the theater scene at school? I studied theater in college, and I want to do something at school, but I’m worried about offending the drama teacher, or stepping on his toes in some way.

You sound like an awesome teacher! The director of my acting troupe always incorporates modern music into his cuts of Shakespeare plays and when we did Taming of the Shrew a few years ago he put in Toxic by Brittney Spears (there was a lot of girl power music that year!). I think it's important for kids to know that Shakespeare can always be relevant and making use of modern music to make commentary on the play is a great way to make that point! Here's my troupe doing an a capella cover of Toxic: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dPZI3Uvnn_I.html
