Almost 1 year now. Hope this gets released soon because the window of opportunity is rapidly closing. Seeing more and more people selling their LEAFs to upgrade to MG4 or BYD Dolphin. I do hope this does make it to market because I want to keep my LEAF around as a second car.

Hi EVs enhanced. Thanks for taking on this great project. I bought a 2017 Leaf with the 30kw battery last year and really enjoy it as a city car but the additional range, better cold weather performance and more reliable DC charging would transform this car. There is a slow but noticeable degradation of the battery so while it's good enough for now, I'm already looking at battery upgrades / replacements. If you get the production sorted, please partner with EU companies such as Range Therapy and EV breakers in Ireland or Muxsan in the Netherlands. If your 16 Blade pack gets to production, the additional volume from partnering with others should help the per unit pricing and keep the current fleet of Nissan Leafs on the roads for a many more years. outweighs

Here in the United States, I got mine for $5k USD because the battery is at half life (I can get 60 miles in the summer with conservative driving). I would want to not spend much more than $15k altogether to get the car and replace the battery, considering it's used (maybe $20k, since new Leafs with similar range are in the $30k's). Hopefully the battery and installation fit my budget

@@gregb1599 Yes, the cost would have to be competive with what a used import would be from Japan, and the price difference between that and what I (for instance) could sell my Leaf for (which btw, has just over 70% SOH (2016 30kWh as well), down from 77% in April when I got it).

Looks like a great twenty year battery. For a ten year old car. I would be happy with a stripped down version. A 40 kwh LFP battery. Which can handle the heat and a PTC heater to warm it up in the cold. A good ten year battery. With better range than the existing 24 kwh battery.
@edvoon
@edvoon Год назад
They did say that they needed the cooling because they used LFPs with the highest energy density - so if they used more heat tolerant LFPs with lower energy density for the stripped down pack we might only get 30-35kWh in the pack. But then again, that would be plenty for a second car which is what most LEAF owners use it for anyway.
@iangardner2311
@iangardner2311 Год назад
@@edvoon agreed. A heat tolerant LFP with 35 kwh is all I want for a 2nd car Leaf. Would expect 99% of all trips would be completed with max 1 DC fast chsrge
@jaseastroboy9240
@jaseastroboy9240 Год назад
@@iangardner2311 I wholeheartedly agree. It does seem that the ten year old Leaf is more suitable for daily use rather than major road trips. It may seem like a good idea to have a long range battery but how many of the owners of the old Leafs would actually make frequent long trips involving multiple quick charges? If that was your use case then likely you would have already bought a more current model EV that was designed to be able to do the long road trips and which already has an active battery temperature management system. My impression is that current owners of the older Leafs would benefit more from a battery that was a low cost replacement and which was made from inherently temperature tolerant cells to avoid capacity reduction with age. If there are LIFEPO4 cells that have a higher temperature tolerance then forget all the active thermal management. Build a battery that just has the more tolerant cells. Use the space that would have been used by the thermal management system to possibly squeeze in larger cells for a bit more capacity. But over all make it simple so that it is low cost. Spending 20-30K on a replacement battery for a decade old vehicle is a bit difficult to justify. Especially if it is only for the occasional long road trip. The number of current owners that would be likely to pay that sort of price is very small so the majority of the Leafs will still end up as scrap even though there is nothing wrong with them other than their battery. To keep the maximum number of Leafs on the road the replacement battery needs to be cheap. There are over 100,000 Leaf owners around the world and currently there are no battery replacements. Leaf owners are having to pick the bones of written off Leafs to try and get something a bit better than what they have. If there was a thriving new battery replacement infrastructure then I could understand looking to build the perfect battery to get some market share. But there is currently NO competition in the battery replacement market for old Leafs. So to get 100% market share all that is required is to make it affordable and having a bit more capacity and a longer lifespan would just be the deal sealer.

New 65kWh Bolt EVs start at $26k USD so the Blade pack upgrade needs to seriously undercut Bolt pricing to be considered a viable option.
@edvoon
@edvoon Год назад
Bolt EV is only sold in the US. So yeah it might not be worth it for you. But then again, you guys get 2nd hand LEAFs much more cheaply and used LEAF batteries are also much easier to procure so maybe it's cheaper for you just to keep getting used or re-conditioned battery packs for your LEAFs. The reason this is so important to Australian and New Zealand LEAF owners is because it's nearly impossible to get a used LEAF battery around here due to the low number of LEAFs on the road. And because Nissan won't supply any replacement batteries once they are out of warranty.

Even the 62kwh (59kwh useable) Nissan Leaf are close to that price with 10% battery degradation, so around the same capacity. Hi there. I am still very interested in your innovative solution for Nissan LEAF owners, but there is now a competitor for this market. VIVNE is offering 40/50/62 kWh for the ZE1/ZE0/AZE0 LEAF variants as module kits and complete battery packs. While they do not have active cooling and heating like your product, they do offer LEAF owners the opportunity to upgrade to new CATL ternary (not LiFePo) that the compny claims can achieve over 400kms in range. I hope to hear some news from EVs Enhanced soon.

Don't need the external liquid cooling as that's going to be too difficult for battery swapping. What's needed is a great lfp replacement battery with good capacity at least 50kwh, and an internal heater to allow charging in cold temperature. Rapid gate shouldn't be such a problem with modern lfp chemistry and can be managed with a good BMS

Would love to see these become available in the US some day. We've got a 2012 with the 24kwh battery, and although it is in really good shape (still has just about max range), we often daydream about upgrading it so we could go on proper roadtrips. Perhaps some day we'll get the Blue variant! Also, our Leaf, and many others in the US, doesn't have Chademo. There is a spot where the plug would be, but it's covered over in plastic. Would it be possible to add Chademo at the same time as an actively cooled battery? We did recently have the whole "cpu" replaced by Nissan, which they said chaged some minor functions regarding the charge controller draining the 12v battery. I saw recently Nissan approved the first V2G charger, which is Chademo. We just turned on grid-discharge with our three Powerwalls last month, and it made our bill drop another $33 from last year. That's only using about 30 kWh for arbitrage, so a 70 kWh Leaf (which we hardly drive) would produce some epic "savings".
@LVRaven610
@LVRaven610 Год назад
@Short Version - I just bought a 2012 SV without the CHAdeMO plug. For use as a "grocery getter", we can live with the J1772 only. However an upgrade to something like the 16 Blade Blue battery makes me wish for a charging upgrade as well. Who knows, maybe even going straight to CCS? We can dream, right? 🤪

@stevejordan7275 Год назад
We got a 2011 with ChaDeMo only because it was the showroom model. Didn't know it was a big deal until Dala asked for a still of the charging screen to verify it wasn't a delusion. (And I've always despised the giant analogue speedometer of later models, so I've never wanted to buy one.) Still, L3 charging is hard on a battery, but you should do it once a year or so to break the "whiskers" that form internally over time (I get about 3-5 miles of range back after doing so.) Nissan replaced the battery with a 24kWh "Lizard" battery in December 2015, and LeafSpy shows the current battery has 68% SOH; fully charged, it can go about 60 miles even in Houston (which is about 20 miles father than we ever need to go.) Since any battery I get is going to lose about 5%/year of its capacity (we seem to be doing better than that, but never mind,) it doesn't make a lot of sense to try to upgrade to a 62kWh; it's not as it it'll last longer, it'll just go farther on a charge and cost three times as much. With a floor jack, stands, and an afternoon, I can slap a 24, 30, or even a 40kWh battery in myself for the cost of the battery alone. As fantastic as I think this AMO battery/cooling solution is, it may not be the right solution for us when considered against cost. Just getting the *newest* Leaf battery we can find might be a better solution, and we can afford to wait a few years for that.

Most people wouldn't spend £9500 on a new battery when they can spend £25000 on a whole new MG4 or something similar with a larger battery. Hi. Good question. A lot of additional capital to pay for more engineers and larger order quantities would move the project along faster for sure. However, we're reluctant to take on a lot of debt in the current financial environment, not do we want to take deposits from customers or seek crowdfunding until we've reached a bunch of internal milestones. The last thing that we want to do is to take money from fellow LEAF owners and then be unable to deliver, so we're just trying to be sure that this risk is minimised before going down this path. Major milestones are being reached and passed each week now, but we've still got some more to tick off.

Too bad that there is no plan to support 62kwh battery. I will be watching for subsequent updates if this changes and it’s availability in Boston area. It’s a shame there is no similar business development in the US northeast. I’m pretty sure there is a market for it if someone decides to take it up.

do you make lbc(bms) of your own design? If you use lto batteries, will you need another lbc?
@EVsEnhanced

Hi. The green variant is LFP not LTO. The original BMS/LBC is not used which is shown in previous videos we've released relating to this project.

@@EVsEnhanced good afternoon! can you design lbs for 4s10p or 5s10p LTO battery (16 pieces). voltage 272-416V, per cell min 1.7V max 2.6V. The climate in Kazakhstan is harsh! The temperature ranges from -40 to + 40 C. LTO batteries are more suitable for our climate.
@EVsEnhanced
@EVsEnhanced Год назад
@@handrogo4494 I think you mean 16 modules that are 10S to get to that pack voltage. We considered LTO at the start of our project and it certainly has some very impressive aspects, but the energy density is much lower of course. Yes, doing a custom LBC/BMS for this is possible if you want to build hundreds or thousands of these packs, but it is a big undertaking and would not be viable for a one-off project.

how do you deal with the pairing code issue?
@edvoon
@edvoon Год назад
They already produce a pairing tool for swapping batteries, I'm sure this won't be a problem. The bigger problem is probably how to use 3.2V LFP cells in a vehicle designed for 3.7V but that's probably what they're spending such a long time working on.

I would give up on it, by the time its released the 40kwh Nissan Leaf will be well under the cost of this battery as current 2018 models are around $25k less the rebate, with them originally saying the battery would be around $20k

It's great that you're making these advances but this video doesn't really tell us anything. You show comparison charts and give vague details about the improvements with no quantification of exactly how much more efficient these batteries are. What about the price? Will the new thermal management system affect the targeted price? When will they be production ready? When will they be ready overseas? In a few years, larger auto makers will start putting out sub 20k electric vehicles that can far surpass what can be achieved by our old Leafs, both in range and features. I want to support your mission, but you're missing a critical window to bring this product to market. It will soon be far more affordable to just get a newer EV with more modern features and none of the battery issues off the older Leafs.
@gregb1599
@gregb1599 Год назад
4 months later still no battery, however you are comparing US prices with a NZ company! Our cheapest EV starts at $NZ$50k and that price is soon going to be $54k and that's for a Chinese 51kwh EV where NZ has a free trade agreement with China so keep dreaming for a $NZ20k EV! They have stated many times they are looking at a cost one third the cost of a brand new 40kwh Nissan Leaf or currently $55,000 for around $18k for the 40kwh battery. Also you will be trading in your old battery pack which will also make the price even cheaper!
