These are some nice bases I am loving the four strings also 5 strings looks amazing but it is missing something in the tone maybe add an a preamp to help with that fifth string
I have had my Behemoth (Black Walnut/hand made maple neck) for about a week now. Some observations that I think will help people deciding if they want to purchase. The body shape is really comfortable, the lower part resembles a Jazz Bass and really allows you to play it seated, it is very stable. The upper horn is Ric style and it is perfect when standing. The bass balances so well in that position, it really is the best of both worlds. No issues with neck dive at all. If anyone has any other questions I would be happy to answer. I am super satisfied with the bass.
Dan, two more amazing looking basses. The white one looks intriguing with the stain you used, don't see many transparent white finishes. The blue one does have that greenish hue, but it looks amazing. 👍
finally, something for us 5-string players to drool over :D And that 0 fret is nice, I feel like more instruments should go that route; it can't be *that* much more expensive to do. That white bass was pretty sharp, since you're asking. I'd probably get a red stain for use with my band if I got one. 5-string, 0 fret. Thanks for sharing!
I am continually blown away by the basses you make. You are a huge inspiration to me, and I hope to build my own bass sometime soon! I would love to see a 5 string with your subtle multiscale, as well as some new pickups (I know you had problems with your quads, but those were so cool). I'm just not really a jazz bass guy.
I think I’m going to be investing in some pickup making equipment so I can experiment with some different pickup designs. It’s hard to find someone to make pickups to my specs at a reasonable price, so I’ll probably end up making my own
This is Exactly how I play (I primarily play a Chapman NS Stick) :D Looking forward - great video!!!! The light-weight wood demo was sick, and the tone was beaute. I love the green/blue stain on that second bass. My oh my.........!
My prototype Behemoth bass would be a 5-string with a zero fret, some sort of blood-red stain for the body (and anywhere else it would make sense), one volume knob, zero tone knob, and humbucking pickups.
Hey Dan, how can someone without social media order one of these masterpieces? I'm local "adjacent," Phoenix resident. I am a huge fan of your Basses and would love to add one to my collection.
One of the best looking basses out there. You’ve taken the ric vibe and improved it across the board. Congratulations.I’m a fan of zero frets but how are the positions of the strings going to stay true without the nut that they usually have behind the zero fret?
Amen to that...Did you have the VHS? It was because of Stu (and Duran’s John Taylor) that I bought my first Kubicki Ex-Factor. Love what you’re doing with the channel. All the best from Brazil.
Hi Dan, I will be looking forward having this bass with a 30" scale neck. And the headstock as the blue burst zero fret version. Neck dimensions as a 60 J Bass. That's what I prefer and would like to order. Or would it be possible to order a complete wired bass body for my 30 inch neck? I would surely tell you the dimensions of my neck. That's that best solution for me and I would definitely order a body Cheers from Germany
Hey Dan, i have an idea you might be interested in! So i know you've moved on to tru oil and shellac for finishing your instruments, but i think it's fair to say they are inferior to Formby's tung oil. They're much glossier and give an external "shell" whereas Formby's just feels like the wood. So, my idea for you, why not buy some 100% pure tung oil, minerals spirits, and varnish, and create your own formula to use and sell on your website to replace Formby's?
Or i could be completely wrong, have you grown to like shellac more than the old tung oil? One interesting thing I've read online is that Minwax tung oil finish actually has zero tung oil in it, which is why it sucks and wears off after less than a year.
Dude! You’re rockin these basses! Love the style and those single size humbuckers sound awesome! Their on my list! I have an Ibanez with Bartolinis soap bar which I hate. Would love to see your humbucker in a soap bar. Most of the other soap bars out there just aren’t to my liking! Much success to you Bro!
Bartolinis sound great but they are a very distinct sound that not everyone loves. I’m looking into winding my own pickups and I’m thinking of starting with a soap bar pickup or maybe a filtertron style
All parts have Hipshot style 5 string bridges for like $30 on eBay I'm sure there's tons of other good alternative affordable bridges. Wilkinson make Hipshot Ultralite tuner knockoffs too for cheaper then the licensed Ultralites
The 4 String Bass is Great. I really like the sound, the neck, the zero fret, string through, and no nut design. You are a true Luthier!! I like the 5 string, just a fan of 4 strings. If you use the lighter wood on the 5 string, will you be able to create the amazing sound of this 4 string? Thanks.
I thought hard about it but because the headstock is maple the blue wouldn’t have matched the sissoo body. I would have had to do a lot color mixing and trial and error
Great stuff, Dan! I didn't notice until you mentioned it about the multiscale. I have seen it on some metal guitars and baritones, but I will need to do more research on it. Have you ever tried using soapbars? I have my '77 Tele with the stock HB and a set of hum cancelling DiMarzio Jazz pups, but am considering an active EQ with soapbars. I've played some Ibanez basses with such and the sounds are amazing.
Hi Dan, the basses look and sound brilliant mate. In regards to pickup combinations, have you ever made a bass with a MM humbucker and a Precision pickup? You’ve inspired me to build my own bass, and I want to have a MM+P combo, so I can switch between a P, PJ and MM sound.
I have built a few P-MM basses, but I haven’t built a complete behemoth P-MM. however on this round of orders I make a behemoth P-MM body as part of a diy kit for someone. They haven’t sent me a pic of how it’s turned out yet.
I gotta say both basses turned out fantastic this time in my opinion.. I usually would play a 5 string but that 4 string with the multi scale and the 0 fret & constant tension really stands out to me... I really like what you've done. I'm curious on pricing now.... Good work my man
Very nice Dan. I've got to learn bass (and build one... :) ) That's a really interesting white finish on the Paulownia. Might be interesting for a new body at some point.
Awesome to see how these builds have evolved. You do great work. It’d be interesting to see a single coil neck pickups and music man style humbucker in the bridge.
Haven’t checked out your channel in about a year or so. Glad to hear that you’re launching your brand. More power to you buddy! Learned a lot from your channel. 🤘
I love playing monlight sonata like the way you did in the intro, I do it like that for fun to impress friends but I've never played it in full, do you have tabs for what you played in the intro?
@@GunsandGuitars Cool man, loved what you did with it. Looks better than Ric's own 'modern' take on their design IMO. Thinking of building one of these kits as well. I don't have the cash to buy another Ric as a back-up for gigs, and having 2 of the same basses seems just silly, but I love the lines of em so much. And I could change it around over time depending on what I feel like doing, which is something I would also never do with a real one. Been watching a lot of you stuff lately to get inspired 🤙
@@GunsandGuitars So the "zero fret" is in effect, the nut? If so, how does one raise the action for other frets? Do the strings rest on anything before they get to the "zero fret"? I'm really struggling to understand, please explain.
I finally signed up for the email list. Dude the 5 with that subtle fan fret neck with the zero fret = love! I think I would want it natural though. Do you do a PJ pickup setup? Sorry I should know this but I forget.
My dream bass would be Paulownia 5er with black stained body, white pick guard and then the 2 pickups in the same orientation as the Warwick Thumb. That means they are both placed side by side close to the bridge at a slight angle. I would jump on a future preorder if I could get close to the thumb sound in a lightweight ergonomic package.
It will be a while yet before I could order but I am really liking the nutless zero fret! I have been quite interested in the Paulownia wood for a couple of reasons. One the weight (arthritis thru my back and neck, also stenosis in my neck) the second is a nickname for the wood being "Phoenix Wood". I am very happy to hear you talk about how it is a definite hardwood so should hold up well. I had a brain injury going on 9 years ago and it has taken me out of many things including serving on worship teams. I used to serve 5 days/nights a week. Multiple sets thrown in there regularly. Anyhow, I hope to "rise from the ashes" one of these days and hopefully serve again. Even serving one day would be a blessing. I'm working at healing. With TBI each one is different with different challenges and ongoing issues and surprise issues that come out of nowhere. I have been a huge fan of the Ric-esque shape of your basses and the experiments and innovations you have discovered and developed. I very much appreciate you inviting on this journey of growing your company. I'm very torn between a BEAD and a 5 string. I really like the string spacing of a BEAD. Anyhow, blessings to you and the fam on your continuing journey!
This is my dream bass I love the Rickenbacker shape but I like your offset luthier take on it and the whole bass in general so I think I’m gonna get one of these but a 5 string fretless eventually🤘
I told you on Facebook, but that Sissoo wood finish is stunning. I love it so much. Hey Dan, when I get my tax check in a few weeks I was wanting to get a pair of your quad killer pickups and the electronics to go with it, but I don't see them on your site. If I had the money I would just get you to make me one with that sissoo wood dyed blue, but I don't think I can afford ya, so I was going to redo my bass.
That really stinks. I was hoping to be able to buy a 5 string Behemoth with those quads. Maybe something can be figured out where it wouldn’t be a patent infringement.
