Not all hydrangeas are created equal when it comes to bloom time. Here's a peek at the hydrangeas that have opened first for us.
Lots of incredible varieties from ‪@pwcolorchoice‬ ‪@SpringMeadowNursery‬ ‪@FirstEditionsShrubsTrees‬ ‪@ProvenWinnersRU-vid‬

Two of the three Little Lime Punch I planted this spring have been blooming here in Zone 6b for weeks. They are currently a lovely cream color. I am looking forward to seeing how they color up as the season progresses. Thank you for the very thoughtful and informative survey. Even if you have a longer season than Northern Michigan, it is nice to have hydrangeas flowering over a long period. Hydrangeas provide so much garden value for the price of the plant! I have been planting a lot of oakleaf hydrangeas in my wooded areas. They are another early and spectacular bloomer for us and, if happy where they are planted, very easy care. They are also natives and I basically just let them do their thing. Our biggest problem with non-remontant macrophyllas is the deer eating all the buds!

I dream of having a happy oak leaf hydrangea… they struggle with our winters up here. The deer seem to like the hydrangeas even more than I do 😆

Excellent info. Bobo has been a great performer for me in zone 6b. Just got a Quick Fire and hope it doesn’t overwhelm its location. I’ve never planted a large variety. Lol it looks good in my head!

I’m in zone 6A. Summer Crush has been an disappointment. They bloomed nicely in the first two years, then they died. However, Quick Fire, Limelight, Endless Summer Original never disappointed us. Tuff Stuff was good for three years, then stopped blooming. I’m all in for panicle Hydrangeas. I just bought 11 of them. They will replace the roses that only bloomed for a month in early summer. Not worthy. I will simplify my garden next year: hydrangeas play the theme with coneflowers and zinnias filling up the gaps between hydrangeas. Of course, the evergreens will stay between the hydrangeas too.

You’ve got quite a collection of hydrangeas going. I’m sure it’s beautiful. Usually when a hydrangea like Tuff Stuff stops blooming (and is otherwise healthy), it needs more fertilizer (we go with a time-release for flowering shrubs/roses). Not sure that’s the case for your plants, but it’s strange they would fade out in a few years… That’s when they’re usually just hitting their stride.

Bobo isn’t an early bloomer in my garden- at least not early like Quick Fire. I’d say mine is behind Fire Light.

My Little Quick Fire, bought online from Home Depot. 2 Gal 3rd Summer now. I pruned it kind of late, but the stems were quite Leafy so I just stuck 7 of them in cells under the grow lights. No hormone powder I did not trim the leaves. 4 of them are still green and lush. 2 have blooms on them. I probably should cut those off, but I just let them do what they want. If I end up with just 2 living next year I will a happy camper. It has been 8 weeks.☺ Zone 6A 50 miles north of Indy my bush is covered with blooms. About 4 feet wide and 3 ft. tall now.

Hydrangeas give a bright spot for us in Michigan when the evening temps start to drop way before we’re ready. Some of the new varieties like Little Lime Punch and Limelight Prime and Quick Fire Fab might offer you a bit more color than some of the others.

I’m in zone 7 with high humidity. My limelight primes have shocked me with how well they’ve done in their first year. Full sun and never wilted. Plus they bloomed almost a month before my old limelight’s. And no breaking branches.

I only have 1 hydrangea, ive had it for about 20 years. It hadn't bloomed yet this tsummer, it dont even have buds on it. I live in zone 6. It came a very late frost this spring Killed it plum back. I forgot to cover it up with my white sheet. It blooms on old wood, so its not going to bloom at all this summer. It's ok, has done this a few times in the past. Its huge and all leafed out, lush and green. I'll be keeping a close watch on it next spring. Its got all colors on it. Cream, green, purple, blue and pink. Great video, thank you for sharing all these beautiful hydrangeas with us and all the great information ❤❤❤❤❤❤

The Fire Light tid bit that I planted last autumn, has yet to bloom in my zone 6 garden. It’s perfectly healthy with a lot of leafing out. Why isn’t it blooming for me this summer?
@UpNorthGardenMI
@UpNorthGardenMI Год назад
Are you fertilizing with a balanced or a flowering shrub/rose fertilizer? Usually healthy leaves without flowers means they’re getting a lot of nitrogen (like the fertilizer used on lawns), but not enough of the other nutrients needed for producing blooms.

I have a large deck on the north side of my house. Can I put a multi-colored hydrangea "hedge" (similar to your parent's house) across the front of it? Will they bloom nicely on the north side?
@UpNorthGardenMI
@UpNorthGardenMI 8 месяцев назад
Arborescence hydrangeas (white and pink) normally do great on the north side (as would panicle hydrangeas - there are many dwarf varieties). If you choose macrophylla hydrangeas (pink and blue) be sure they will grow in your zone and can handle the light conditions. Place plants based on the recommended spacing on the tag (planting slightly tighter will fill in sooner). Hope that helps. The staff at a good garden center can recommend plants that will do best in your area.
