After a year of significant renovations, the nation’s first museum, Sydney's Australian Museum, is once again open to the public.
The $57.5m renovation known as Project Discover redeveloped the Museum’s public and exhibition spaces, including adding more than 3000sqm of new public space, repurposed from back-of-house areas. Project Discover was made possible by the NSW Government contributing $50.5m and generous philanthropic support from AM private donors.
The first exhibition to enter the AM’s new Touring Exhibition Hall is Tyrannosaurs - Meet the Family, an update of one of the AM’s most popular exhibitions, which has been touring in the USA and Europe for the past five years. In addition, the iconic Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year exhibition has returned to the AM in the Hintze Hall exhibition space in time for reopening.
As well as the transformed exhibition spaces, the redevelopment has also created new education facilities, a new museum shop, a second café, expanded Members Lounge, cloaking and new amenities.
