Never seen the material you need to learn for the FAA Private Pilot
Written Exam? Well neither had I ! I spent hours figuring out just one
or two steps. But once I did- the material became super easy. I share
that information with you here. It's free. Cost nothing. I don't make a
dime off of this. I just want to share what I've learned. The more we
know, the better pilots we'll be. -Alan

I was fine with the flying guide and handbook of aeronautical knowledge, but once I cracked FAR/AIM open I realized that I had better things to do with my life than spend time memorizing volumes of rules and procedures. The test prep material is more or less essential if you want to zero in the rules and procedures that matter for the test.

It works. And FAA makes the Question to us "tree out of the forest". So why to go to search the answer in the forest?

On the FAA Knowledge Test I know there are 60 questions and you have 120 Minutes to answer them. What about the oral questions during the check ride? How many questions are there? What are the topics? How much time do I have to answer them? What materials can I use to answer these questions if any?

Good morning Dr. Feller, great info, thanks, I have a question for you sir, the Jeppensen book that you mention, is this the only book I would need in order to pass the test? my understanding is there is about nine different test that one must take in order to become a private pilot or commercial pilot, am I right about this? If you can, please explain in detail, how many test I need to take and is this the only book I need to buy, a friend of mine said there is about 10,000 different question in order to past the final written test and them comes the flying training and test, again am I right so far, thank you Dr Feller.

For the private pilot certificate in the US there is one written exam and then later an oral exam as part of the practical exam (i.e. checkride). Other certificates have their own exams. E.g. there is a different written exam for Sport Pilot. You'd take that exam if you planned to pursue a Sport Pilot certificate. These other certifications are alternatives rather than prerequisites for the private pilot certificate. So you don't need to take other exams if you plan to pursue Private Pilot Certification. The same is true of the commercial certificate. It's important to prepare for the correct exam, because some of the questions are geared toward the certification you are pursuing. E.g. the sport pilot exam will include questions about restrictions for sport pilots, while the Private Pilot exam will ask questions about the limits of what a private pilot can do.

I don't want to just memorize the questions and answers, I want to actually know the whys and hows before even starting training. I too though the test preps didn't have enough info in their answer explanations and it was frustrating. They say those of us that want to learn it all while preparing for the test are over-complicating it, but I disagree, because they say that AFTER their own training and some of them admit they over-complicated it also. As for now, what do I know? I just want to learn it. Thanks for Anyway, I'm glad I found your videos. They are immensely helpful. Thinks for filling in the gaps for many of the charts, tables, tools, etc.

The material tested on is a mix of material you can understand or explain (basics of flight, why aircraft spin) and material that you simply need to memorize (radio procedures for a class C airspace, when a class 1 medical certificate expires for a 36 year old using it as a private pilot). Using a prep guide or a prep course helps you decide what you should memorize and what you might want to spend some time learning in depth. Even for the more conceptually grounded material, there's a lot of useless stuff that you are probably better off just memorizing (e.g. compass dip errors, altimetry errors for differences in local barometric pressure and temperature). On the other hand if you really enjoy understanding everything there is to know about flight then go for it. It won't hurt, except make sure you really understand it, or you'll need to memorize it anyways. (e.g. some people can't get their mind around altimetry errors caused by temperature differences, and if you can't keep it straight you'll just need to settle for high to low look out below and such).

The 1959 DeSoto was the most beautiful car by design, to bad 1960 and 61 to they made them ugly. It's not hard to understand why they didn't sell well them last 2 years in production. The question is if they were made this year what would look like?
