Learn all about blackwork embroidery, also known as double-running stitch or Holbein stitch, from potentially as early as the Egyptian (medieval) period up through the 16th century (Tudor and Elizabethan times).
This type of reversible embroidery was made popular in Tudor England by King Henry VIII's first wife, Katherine of Aragon. Prior to Henry VIII's and Katherine's divorce, this embroidery had been referred to as Spanish stitch (since Katherine was Spanish). After their divorce, the term blackwork was adopted for use to describe this particular type of embroidery (rather than the previously used term of Spanish stitch).

Thanks for these great videos! The French pronounce soie to sound like “swah.” And the town of Bruges is pronounced like “broosz” with the final consonant sounding like the s in leisure.

Thanks for the introduction! How do you add the stitching to clothing?
@LynneFairchild

First, I embroider the fabric and then sew the clothing together. For example, if I am putting embroidery on cuffs, I would measure out how long and wide the cuffs need to be and embroider that section. Then, I would sew the cuffs on to the sleeves.

An example of this would be a caul that I had previously made. Once I was done with the blackwork embroidery done on a slate frame, I made caul. This can be seen here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mNrsHGOo1Q4.html

I am just beginning to look at doing this. My question. How do you store your projects? I know you are involved in the SCA, so what do you use that would be period to take to events to work on and keep them safe? Do you have special travel things such as baskets or needle cases?

I have a basket with a lid. Plus, I keep my needles in a little wooden case.

Could you use a cotton thread instead? Also when you are working a more complicated pattern how do you figure out the pathways?

Yes. When I first learned how to do blackwork embroidery, I used embroidery floss. One of the problems that I found with the floss, however, was that it knotted easily and the knots were difficult (if not impossible) to get out. The silk thread is not only historically accurate, but getting knots out is usually quite easy. With more complicated patterns, I study the pattern first to work out how I can move from left to right (and then return going right to left) without doubling up on any stitch. Depending on the pattern, you may find yourself with (for example) four different starting points on the left-hand side to complete your pattern.

question. Can you use simple machine thread...like a 50wt or 40wt or 12wt 8wt...what do you suggest if not using silk (i have a large collection of wonderfil cotton, perle cotton, embroidery, and isacord machine thread)

When I first learned how to do blackwork embroidery, I used embroidery floss. At that point, I had already been doing cross stitch for a few years and had a large bag of embroidery floss that I was given. Machine thread will be thinner than silk thread, making the embroidery appear less bold. Also, be prepared for the thread to knot occasionally. Sometimes the knots simply won't come out and have to be worked into the back of the embroidery where hopefully no one will see it.

It looks like the sampler doesn't have holes. How do you know how much space to go between stitches, or are the holes just to small for the camera to pick up?
@LynneFairchild
@LynneFairchild 3 года назад
I use linen fabric. The holes are too small for the camera to pick up well. For a better visual of what the fabric looks like, please look at the pictures here: tudorblackwork.blogspot.com/2015/12/what-thread-to-use.html . For another visual, please check out this video at 4:20 at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Mhm-OcoIHGI.html . For the sampler and other smaller items (like a coif), I count every third hole on the linen fabric. For larger pieces (for example, sleeves or a forepart skirt), I would count every fifth hole.
