Thank you so much Professor Dave. I'm a 49 year old maintenance technician and am interested in studying to get a BA in mechanical engineering. I use your physics and math courses from time to time as a way to keep my mind fresh and pass time in an educational way. Recently my 14 year old son has showed an interest in science, particularly astronomy. Long story short, I turned him on to your channel and he is now a well-spring of knowledge. Keep up the good work Dave.

Damnit. This series isn't receiving nearly enough attention. Dave has put together one of the most excellent astronomy series' ever made (I've seen A LOT!) and hardly anybody is watching it. This saddens me deeply. Honestly, Dave's knack for making complex subject matter incredibly easy to grasp & understand... I'd love to see some of his work make it into classrooms. If it were up to me, his entire channel would be required viewing. We'd have a lot fewer "flat-earther" buffoons running around, for one.

I would suggest you find out what astronomy text they use at your local college,and pick up a copy of it.Or do what I did,and sign up for astronomy 101.I did it because I was interested in astronomy,and because we got to play with the college’s 14”Celestron on a German equatorial mount with a clock drive.It was that telescope that spurred me to get my ownCelestron SuperC8+,whenHalley’s comet appeared in the 1980s

I have a question I'd very much like an answer to, like most things I'm sure there is a simple explanation I'm unaware of : I know about conservation of momentum, this is somewhat related. The earth is in orbit around the sun traveling at something like 60 or 70 thousand miles an hour through space... If we launch a rocket or a satellite or whatever into space, once it leaves Earth's atmosphere wouldn't the Earth be speeding away and have to constantly catch up?
@tom2443
@tom2443 Год назад
I think I've figured it out with some googling ... It's about the Earth's atmosphere, it's gravity etc. I'm guessing that the farther away an object is from Earth the less of this effect, and wouldn't be able to keep up with the Earth's speed.

(Correct me if I am wrong.) Earth is in the goldilocks zone, and it might be one of the many possible reasons why there is life on earth. Earth's SOLAR orbit was in the goldilocks zone, which the goldilocks zone is the distance from the sun. The distance the earth, well orbits from the sun, is just perfect enough to form water. It wouldn't be too cold for the water to freeze, nor too hot to evaporate the water. As well as having-- well, non-poisonous oxygen for us to live in. Thus, forming life. Although there are many articles/reports of living things, organisms, in other planets and moons that may not have edible oxygen. There are also reports of water in other planets and moons, such as Mars, the 4th planet from the sun, and Titan, which is one of Saturn's 100+ moons. Although there are more examples. An AU is an astronomical unit! Which is known to be how far the planet is from the sun, some examples is Venus: 0.7 AU, which totals to 107.72 million km! 1 AU totals to ~149,600,000 million km. And Earth is 147.12 million km, which means Earth is 1 AU away from the sun. And, the AU of the goldilocks zone is between 0.95-1.67 AU, so it means Earth fits in the goldilocks zone perfectly. Thus also becoming the main reason that Earth was able to form life.

I've been trying to decide whether I should pick astronomy or astrophysics. I really like space and I have this drive where I just wanna know everything I can about everything we don't know. We know so little about space, and I hate it, and I wanna learn everything about it I possibly can in my lifetime. What do you think I should pick? For a bit of background I'm pretty smart I would say and I do great in school. Like, on average, I usually finish the year with 97-98 or higher in everything, sometimes almost all 100s, except art. I hate art. I really fvcking hate art. I'm also above grade level in multiple subjects, like in math im 1 or 2 grades above, and in ELA, im 3 grades above. (These are based on test scores that my teachers showed and told me btw). So, what do you think is better, or what I should pick?

Well if you're interested in astronomy I would suggest watching the entire astronomy series, I wouldn't say it goes into so much depth that you could pass upper-level university exams, but it goes way deeper than most channels! James Webb has turned our standard model on its head... There are massive galaxies bigger than Andromeda just after the big bang, that shouldn't be possible according to our current understanding of the universe... there's more, but I'll let your curiosity take you down that path. Humans always convince ourselves that we have the answers, until we don't. Let's not even begin to talk about quantum mechanics... let's just say, only a fool would deny the possibility of creation.

No, it hasn’t. Someone told you that and you believed them. Watch this series and learn something.
