BTS makes their own music, but that doesn't mean that the whole kpop industry does.In fact, kpop idols don't usually make their own music. This is why BTS stands out from the rest

groups like ikon, straykids and shinee also do and there are many more, but your right the majority don't. but groups that dont do so, always try their hardest to make their music their own but influencing those who do make their music by some lyrics they want or a certain sound of effect.

@@user-tg7ot8jm5h yes, but if you look at the Korean Music Copyright Association the percentage is very very low. Everyone works hard, that's sth you should expect in this kind of industry. Also, we shouldn't forget that idols are very restricted. I've known kpop for more than 7 years, so I know what I'm talking about 😊

And what make them stand out among self producing groups, their music is really meaningful and inspirational. And music quality is really good. Their storyline in their music videos are really meaningful and mindblowing too. Usually kpop groups tend focus on catchy music and less focus on album quality as a whole. While BTS totally opposite.

The man asked that question because that's the notion abou KPOP idols and based on the woman's answer, "it is true to a large extent" that KPOP idols are not considered real artists because most of them, not all, only do what the company has prepared. Unlike BTS, from the very beginning, they were involved in writing and producing their own music which is why they are different from others. One more thing, their CEO gave BTS freedom to express their stories through their music. BTW you can search for it online whether it is true or not. BTS is not the only group or the only artists to write and produce their own music, with due respect to other idols artists. (Bigbang, Zico, +++++++) Another thing, the lyrics of their songs, even the upbeat ones, have deep and beautiful meanings. They have many more beautiful songs without MV. Sea, Love myself, Magic shop are just few of them.

Actually a lot of Kpop groups are a bit of a manufacture. They have producers who produce their music. But a lof artists including BTS do write their own songs.

the K-pop industry actually is known for its way of creating artists with a concept and 'manufacturing' the music, only to appeal to a broad audience. BTS is one of the few groups that even are able to put in their own thoughts and creativity into their group and music. Therefore the question wasn't that far off, actually. I recommend you watch the Netflix documentary from the series 'Explained', the episode is called 'K-pop'. It shows a brief history and some basics about what you should know about the industry! Anyways, lovely video!

BTS are lucky to be with Big Hit Entertainment, because a lot of K-POP companies do have the manufacturing system. The CEO of Big Hit Entertainment (Bang Si-Hyuk) told BTS to write their own songs with their own views, therefore BTS song topics are so broad. Some songs might sounds like singing to someone but actually are singing to themselves, some have topics of struggles that young people have nowadays, some have encouragement to stay stronger, some is about depression, and many many more different topics. In most K-POP group, when you read the lyrics and listen to the music, they are very manufactured with almost the same theme every year. To me BTS is more colorful and interesting, because we are seeing the work of the seven members put together, as they get older their topic changes. If you have seen their debut years, their songs are very strong and dope, as the years passed their songs changes.

kpop is well known for being a manufactured industry tbh and it also has a history of corruption and abuse allegations, so it's actually pretty worthwhile to question that if you don't know anything about bts. there's an old interview with their ceo, bang pd, from circa their debut where he talked at length about how he put the group together and how it differed from the industry standard. bts' conception was pretty experimental within the idol industry and obviously it paid off big time.

*yeah in kpop the music can be manufactured and produced not by the artists themselves. Some kpop groups are so controlled that they don’t really have their own standing behind their music since it’s decided by the company etc even their fashion can be manufactured and so controlled as well. That’s why BTS is special because the members actually do produce their own music and lyrics ofc they have other producers helping but RM and Suga have done ALOT of lyric writing and production for most of their songs...including the rest of the members who have put input in lyrics and production like Jungkook with the song magic shop...and jhope with his mixtape etc*

Bts was given the freedom to write their own music, express themselves, ceo hitmang bang mentioned it himself in his talk "the good insight". He said that's why in their early songs bts talks about school because most of them are still at school at the time. He also mentioned that he did not try to control their lives. I think this is what makes big hit unique and that fans are able relate to. 💜💜💜

Excited for this series!!! I agree with the other comments,, unfortunately, kpop does have a reputation for being very manufactured and controlled by companies, rather than artists, so I'm not especially mad at the reporter; there have definitely been groups where this is true, but many idols nowadays do have some say in producing, writing, or choreographing, and hopefully this trend will grow! BTS are amazing bc not only do they write/produce the majority of their music, they speak about social issues and subjects that resonate deeply with those who are struggling. I think you'll definitely see more of this as you watch this series!

Kpop actually is INCREDIBLY manufactured. You can honestly look at almost any song by any Kpop group and you will not see any of the members listed in the credits because most groups just wait around to get handed a song. One of the reasons BTS is special and has been set apart from every other Kpop group is because they actually participate in the creation of their music. It's a rarity in such a manufactured industry.

most kpop groups are manufactured, that's why big bang was so popular because they were involved in production too, but for example, sm artist are basically robots (there are exceptions of course) but even tho we all know this they are still popular as well. There is a dark side in the kpop industry, thank god we have bts that are slowly breaking those barriers.

Big bang start the trend self producing idols but BTS popularize the importance of self producing with meaningful message. I realized that lately many new groups try to put out meaningful message about their music. Which is such a healthy change for kpop industry. I'm so proud for BTS.

Well that is the stigma that comes with k-pop, that is manufactured music. From what I know in the music industry in Korea there is a difference between artists and idols. Artists are the people who make, or are very involved into their music making and idols are basically entertainers and performers, idols perform the music their company (label) makes for them to perform and usually have little to say into the artistic process. Bts are idols but they are artists as well, they are involved into their craft because they love what they do and have the opportunity given by their company. Now there are kpop groups that write some of their stuff as well, but there are some that don't and they just perform the music they are given because that's what they signed up to do in the first place, be performers. There's nothing wrong with being just a performer, but I think we all know that Bts is very appreciated because they do write their own stuff, it makes fans feel way more closer to their artists. If people know more information please feel free to add anything I've missed.

Jeej, I'm so glad you are doing this series! It's really good! And please don't forget that there are little funny clips after the credits of each video. Also, I'm probably only repeating what other people have already said, but the K-Pop industy is in many ways quite a controlled industry. The entertainment companies literally produce 'entertainers'. Depending on the company, these idols live a very restricted life. They enter these companies, sometimes at a very young age, to become trainees (Jungkook became a trainee when he was only 13/14 years old!) and train several years in all aspects of being a performer before being allowed to debut. Most idols all live together in dorms and the first few years after debut it is not uncommon to not recieve a single penny or very little for their work (they kind of have to 'earn back' all the money the company spent on them while they were trainees). How they behave on tv and in public, what they eat, wear and say can all be controlled. A lot of idols are not even allowed to date. The cameras are basically always on them and one step out of line can result in a 'scandal', especially girlgroups are monitored 24/7. They have very strict schedules and are forced to work their butts off. Not all companies are bad, but there are some that have done and are doing some questionable things! Because these idols are first and foremost performers they don't always have the talent or freedom to produce their own music. The companies have production teams that make the music and the idols are just told to perform those songs. I'm not saying that makes them bad entertainers, there are plenty of singers in the West too that don't make their own music, and I would say all idols are extremely talented in many ways! What makes BTS so special is that they do have lots of freedom to produce their own stuff. RM, Suga and J-Hope are credited on the majority of BTS' songs (the Wikipedia pages of their albums give a very nice overview). They do still work with the production team of BigHit, but they are allowed to really expres themselves. There have always been groups/idols that produce their own stuff and it is becoming more and more common, like Stray Kids, Day6, BigBang and Seventeen (and probably many more that I don't really know about).

I'm really glad you're reacting to this series. The squishyminyoongi series is lots of fun, entertaining, and informative too so it's not *bad* despite people going 'noooo not that one', but it does make a lot of assumptions, and that means it's iffy on accuracy in some places, which may cause some fans to develop some ideas about the guys that aren't really true. This one mostly lets the guys speak for themselves, using their own words and interviews and less reliant on a voiceover to explain things. Plus these are shorter, the other series were about 15-20 minutes per video. So I think these are a bit more ideal for new reactors. But if you have the time, you should check them out anyway, she put a lot of work into them and a lot of new fans learned about BTS through them. And they're funny. :D

they are saying it because kpop industry is known like this. normally kpop artist maintain by certain company which decide each and everything (thats why called the factory manufactured) kpop artist was just a symbol of beauty back then. music, dress, concept everything was decided by others they just do what they told to do. even they are forbade from dating or force to diet by company. but BTS broke that stereo type.they produce their own song.their company also don't restrict them like others. they express them fully and thats why people who don't like kpop also love BTS.

KPOP IS mass produced and factored music. More and more groups nowdays ARE writing on producing their own music and dance (BTS, Bigbang, B.A.P, Block B, Seventeen, Stray kids, and many more) but most of the girl groups ARE STILL mass produced (except of course a few like (g)idle, EXID,... ).

Everyone has said it already about the nature of Kpop and how it is rather manufactured. When we look at the language we use within the Kpop fandom, the word “idol” says a lot about Kpop. However, I do think the situation is changing, and it’s good to see Kpop artists who write their own music getting recognition. No doubt the companies will see how audiences receive idols with creative control, and look to how they can feed that element into the machine.

I dont want to name groups, but many of them even the top groups excluding BTS, they dont make their own music. Their answer about their music is usually really scripted. Because they themselves dont understand what they sing about. They just sing whatever their company gave to them. While BTS is not. Their songs are totally about them or message that they want to convey. They always look convincing and confident when talking about their music. Its really clear they make their own music. Grammy museum interview is the best example to dig deeper BTS as musicians/artists. Thats why many army get tired and angry sometimes when BTS get asked with dumb questions during in US. But as time pass by, they earn their recognition as artists, media start to treat them as real artists and ask real question about their music. Some kpop groups who went to US, struggled to answer the question about their music. The interviewers thought the other kpop groups are same like BTS. They thought they make own music too and can answer confidently about their music. But the truth its not. It was so embarassing to watch tbh. Maybe you dont realize this as you grow up watching many western artists make their own music but kpop world is not working like that. Yes, solo artists always get their own freedom in making own music. But for kpop groups, its really rare. Especially girl groups. But its true that many new groups start writing own music, but it still sometimes restricted. The companies gave the concept and members forced to write lyrics about same love songs. They cant truly express the true message that they want. And its always end up a same scripted answer about their music again.

Majority of Kpop idols do not participate in writing composing or producing so he wasn't wrong in asking. It's very rare. Kpop is a manufactured industry that sells a dream, a fantasy. It's common knowledge that a lot of groups don't like their music or concepts but are under contract. I don't think it takes away from talent, they just don't have creative freedom like bts or a few other groups might.

Well in my opinion...because most of KPOP group (not all of them but most of them) indeed not produce their own music or write their own lyrics...for me who found BTS in 2014, i'm quite surprised at BTS by their lyrics.. cause before that I already know a lot of KPOP group but they're just same typical group that sing about love, jealousy, cheesy thing and etc, but BTS' song is different they're talk about youth, our struggle as a teenager and that's touched straight to my heart at that time...BTS do something different from the start... they talk our inner voice as a teenager, they're talk about their origin, their pride as a korean..they're struggle as an underdog, about mental health and depression not only that all of their music have a story to it...from their first album 2 cool 4 skool to their last album loveyourself answer all of them has a timeline story and theories...for having all of member contributing to write their own lyrics and most of them to produce their own song in BTS are amazing and all of that is really rare to be found in general Kpop boyband at that time even in South Korea itself Idols or boyband and girlband considered not a real artist and have a lot of stereotypical....

Honestly as much I hate companies and how they treat their idols,I love artists, because of how talented they are. However not all agencies treat their idols well, there are a lot of idols that are completely overworked, sleep a very little amount of time, not allowed dating and etc.I don't mind If some of them don't write their music, because a lot of american artists don't write their music as well. For example, the biggest entertainment company in south korea sm is horrible to their artists, and their artist don't usually write their music(only some of them),but this company have the best vocalists and dancers in the industry and their songs are so good.

What to eat ,what to say or not say. Someone in agency write The song they sing it. .The factory part meant in past Kpop artist were like good little robot ,agency control .Some agency still do .But BTS are so popular because they are different .Write, produce, came up with a link story line with all there album. There agency trusted them .They don't have a no dating contact.(Which is unheard of in kpop) Have control over there own music. Now there some past artist who write produce.A group BIGBANG member Gdragon.BTS is such a influence some of the new artist are saying they write and produce there music now.Agency are learning.

they do have writers and producers but it is to help improve or give suggestions to their content they create. However BTS is out of the norm and sadly others don't get the respect BigHit gives BTS. The 3 big companies have said over and over they hire songwriters. BTS still has control by BigHit over dating and media presentation. I think a huge part of BTS's success is that they are allowed to be the musicians they are and not that controlled over content. You can feel that freedom in their music and messages.

People stereotypes the kpop industry as manufactured but they often overlook the fact that many western artists are manufactured as well, slave contracts are common in Korea as well as America, many famous artists don't write or even own their songs Those who talk about "kpop is manufactured" always annoys me because they're implying the western market don't, but in fact they've done it for a much longer period of time comparing to the Korean market

Many artist not only kpop artist had producers and people who writes their song and the artist only sings In kpop most of the groups are like that, the company gives them the song, the lyrics, the choreo and visuals MVs they just sing and follow orders like robots, they treat idols really bad (some companies) even not long ago an idol got brave and told the people what their CEO was making to them like hit them or scream at them and many artist doesnt get even the 30% of the money of what they do, some companies doesnt even pay them at all (Big hit (BTS company) used to no pay them but it was because big hit was broke but now the give them the most % of every thing) Thats why they call it a factory just using pretty boys and girls that just sing and act the way the company wants not how they like to :(

I hate the concept of kpop being manufactured and sure it is but so does everywhere else. Label companies are bot here to make friends they’re there to make profit. Be that as it may, you don’t have to be a great lyricist/composer to be a great artist. Look at figures like Sinatra and Beyonce. They’ve legends and yet most of their music and if not all are made by others. So when people like BTS comes along others belittle their contributions of their labor. They try to compare to other great artists without looking at the whole picture that is the music industry. Anyways I’m looking forward in seeing your reactions to the rest of this series. 💜💜💜

But it sort of is manufactured because it's not just music. It's weight, clothes, plastic surgery, overall appearance, even attitude and personality because of concepts. In extreme companies, it's their ability to drive, to date and have a sex life and even alcohol to try and keep an idols 'innocent' image. It is changing but I don't think we can deny that K-pop is not at least manufactured.

5:00 they say it because it is true, a lot of KPOP idols are not allowed in the participation of their own craft. I think lately it’s been changing because the audience is taking notice/liking of things being more organic, but it’s also because they want to expand and westerners care about that stuff. It still is not very cared for by Koreans though, which are their main audience, Koreans really don’t care, you just need to look pretty. The ugly truth.

The kpop industry is know for being the puppets of the companies. They only are good looking and know how to dance, but they never touch the music , the most of their song are from the garbage of USA, also their hard dances make them lip sink, that's because they call them idols but not artists . So if you see the coreos of bangtan are amazing but not hard at all to can sing as well, also they fans look down to bts when they fail their voices in live when their artist don't make the effort . That industry are very toxic . The big companies of Korea always is trying to get down to big hit because they are making that anybody can, have a lot of loyal fans

Sometimes when I watch Bts interviews I wonder if the interviewer has even bothered to google to rule out the stupidest questions off. Also the question of making their own music... I don't really measure music by the fact if they perform their own made music or not. Not all great artists or groups are great at writing music...

I can see why that interviewer upsets you, however (I'm not defending him) u have to see it from his side...as a repoeter, when doing the research for the interview you work with what u find...and like she said, a lot of it used to be manufactured....especially in the beginning and by certain companies.....but than came BIGHIT and BTS...their CEO gave them free rayne, allowing them to write, produce, and make their own music....something, up until them was rare....now because they do, other groups like stray kids, seventeen, ATEEZ, and some of other groups get to do the same thing...now I'm not saying that BTS alone made that happen, but what I am saying because someone had faith in them...it allowed other companies have faith in their own groups...I know there are other groups before BTS produced and wrote their own music....but they were few and far between...so u see why the interviewer was asking that question...
