Thanks! Well, actually Douglass lighters were an American brand between ww1 and ww2 (iirc). They were more expensive than the cheaper lighters at the time and the company died out. Tokyo Pipes then took the design and manufactured them with modern methods and a modern twist (I guess). They're supposed to be a modern trench lighter, but trench lighters aren't made as well of course.
These now go for shy $200 on ebay crazy prices. I had no idea these existed back when you made the video but wow these could be collectable one day. There are Chinese clones now I wonder how they compare but the prices speaks for itself.
200 bucks??!! That's crazy. Thats almost double the price! I know they stopped production for awhile as they were shifting factories. I've got a bunch of neo 3's and field L's. Planning ordering Field S soon
Hey man can you do a video on how to change the WICk and cotton. There are many videos on zippo lighter’s but none on the Douglas. It would be cool if you made one
It was a long time ago that i did the wind test and can't really remember the results anymore. Recently though, I lit both lighters in strong wind and they both kept their flame
i don't have them both with me right now, but IIRC they're of a different diameter. Yeah, the Field L with spare fuel tank and flint compartment would be boss.
Do you carry any parts for the field L ? my snuffer cap has no tension anymore and I thing I need either a new assembly or replacement leaf springs that hook around the top
My stocks are all based in Malaysia, but we could probably ship it to you. You can contact us through our shopping portal, and with some details, we could get a postage quote for you. cresdo.com/Douglass-Field-L-Lighter-Brass-p145320811
Hello...I have a Douglas Field Lighter S and I’m having a problem with the wick getting singed and then just smoldering instead of having a regular flame. Any idea what could be causing this? I put in a brand new wick from Douglas, but it’s still doing the same thing.
Usually after the first burn, the wick will get a bit singed but I think its just normal. If you're getting smoldering instead of a flame, then something is definitely wrong. That sounds like something wrong with the wick itself, but i don't see what really could have happened. Perhaps play around with cutting the wick shorter or making it longer, or even put some fuel right on the wick first to help it soak through. If nothing else, buy another wick.
David Weglarz Thank you, David...I thought maybe it was just a bad wick too...so I bought another one (two actually)...the Douglass brand ones, just to be safe, but it’s still burning them up. I will try soaking them in fluid...maybe that is. The cheaper brass one I have is saturated with fuel and does not singe, so maybe you have the right idea there. Thanks again!
@@jayj4142 Haha, no problem man, just trying to think what it could be, the Field S is really a fantastic lighter. Usually when you fill the lighter up, and it's upside down, I would top it off and then keep holding it upside down for a minute until you start to see some dripping on the floor coming from the wick, that should do it. Or of course, you could simply take the wick out, soak it in fuel for a few minutes and then put it back, probably the better option. Hope that works for you. I've also had luck with the zippo wicks at the gas station, they work fine too. Just wondering now, it could possibly have just been a bad batch of wicks from the retailer you bought from, a batch that never got the soaking process or something, hey things happen. I don't know why I'm writing a novel, good luck man.
i've only tested the L which uses the same diameter flint. I used to assume it would work on the S, but now that you mention it, the S is quirky the way it strikes, i might have to test the S just to see how it fares.
I just got the Douglas L lighter and its great. Only issue is that I need to refill with lighter fluid after only a day. You mentioned that yours lasts for a month. Is there something I am doing wrong for the fluid to only last a day? Thanks!
On flint size, Bic lighter flints tend to be quite large in diameter. I love lighters that I can recycle these flints in from disposables as most people will just give you the empties and sometimes they can have a good half inch or more of flint in them even when used daily for cigarette lighting. Protip: observe direction of grind when first installing as it makes cutting in with the new wheel very very easy. I have probably about a foot or so worth of scavenged Bic lighter flints of various usable size, cost me nothing. (I also use them in my oxy/acc sparklers.
@@The_Polished_Edge Im not sure exactly as I am looking for info so I know which one to buy. I did put a set of vernier over for you and the diameter comes out at 2.54mm or 100 thou (0.1 inch) (and just shy of 10mm long in this case if that interests you) The fit in my Zippo knockoff though and my brothers full brass Zippo so possibly (I know it wont in a full steel Zippo I used to own) Oh, and the flints out of those cheapy clear colored plastic lighters is a bit smaller in diameter, but I don't harvest from those as they tend to have very little in, even brand new.. but maybe enough to get you out of a jam.
@@74KU ah, if it'll go into the zippo's, it'll fit in the douglass, but it'll still be loose. It'll still work though. It would likely fit in the Neo 3 series well though.
i've had mine for months and used it. the rubber hasn't worn from heat at all, despite the lighter getting quite hot during use. It was a concern at first, but it still looks pretty solid.
I’ve had my Field S a few years and the cap wasn’t closing properly, the o ring wasn’t seating, so I washed it with a cotton bud and Zippo fuel and put a bit of silicone grease on the o ring. I was careful, but grease got on the flint wheel which is now clogged up with flint residue. I’ve tried washing it out, but it needs the wheel removed to do a proper job with a fine brass brush and solvent. The screws need a specialised tool, any idea how to get one, or a workaround? By the way, getting more than 3 days of lighting from a Neo 3 isn’t a thing, it’s not happening. I rarely smoke, but I have to fill every couple of days for the single flame to light my woodburner. I’m gonna have to get a capped version, a #1 or #2.
Thank you! All 3 models can use Zippo Flint's, even if it's smaller than the ones for the L and S. It might not be ideal, but it'll work. I've never tried the wick though
@@TheGearhead222 there's a possibility the the marvelous flints won't fit the neo 3, unless they made a smaller diameter one. Those Flint's are better than the Zippo ones though. Throws a bigger spark.
Hi i have neo 3 but im having problem with the flint as it cant fit. I dont know which is the correct size flint and zippo flint i heard that its all standard size. Need yr help. I love the feel of this lighter but i cant used it anymore.
Loh Yiren yea I pull the wick out and cut the charred parts off. I’m also using zippo brand gas. But for some reason my field s flame turns really small after 4-5 seconds after ignition. Even after I cleaned the lighter and refilled the gas. All my other Douglass lighters don’t have that problem. That’s why maybe I think I need to change the cotton inside. But I don’t know how to do that,
Loh Yiren I actually ordered a new maintenance kit. And inserted a new wick and repacked the cotton material with the old one. But the flame is much higher and stays lit for longer now
@@The_Polished_Edge That makes sense, a parts kit would make the process one thousand times easier. I wonder if I can get my hands on one, or at least ad hock one from other tools.
@@zebraneighbor6383 I reckon you could use a small heat shrink tube on one end of the wick to make it easier to thread through. The prepped wick is pretty much all you'll want from the parts kit anyways
I have been looking at these for awhile, they are out of stock alot. I like the s waterproof feature but the L seems better for daily carry. I don't smoke so they won't be used much. What's your favorite?
I like the S and the L, but if I had to choose if say L. I don't smoke much other than the occasional pipe. If not in use, and under the right conditions, fuel lasts in the L for about a month.
@@The_Polished_Edge ended up with the s model. Very well made, I also have an off brand from Amazon that looks slightly like this, cheaper but definitely not made as well.
Does anyone know why my flint wheel stopped working? I put a new one inside and it feels as if theres no friction being made against the wheel, it just slides smoothly not creating any spark! ):
Bought a neo three recently....what a waste of money, you fill it and it’s completely evaporated in 2 or 3 days....I thought these lighters were meant to be better in that respect than Zippo’s ?
Mine lasted a week without use. Do be wary of fakes though, not sure if the perform different, but they exist. Give the field L a shot, that lasts much longer
@@The_Polished_Edge thanks for the reply , I’m wondering if mine is possibly a fake , can you tell me what yours says on the base cap ?? , mine has a arrow sign telling which direction to loosen or tighten, it also says Neo , made in Japan, oil lighter. ..... does that sound right to you??
@@davidthompson1622 I got an old photo of the base here. You can try and compare it. facebook.com/ThePolishedEdgeKnifeSharpeningService/photos/597859470656942
@@h0rcrux774 i'm based in malaysia though. I've got a shop here, but no website yet. You can drop me an email of your country and which model you like. I've only got 1 unit of the Field S left, but a few of the neo 3 and Field L
This lighter seems nice, but broke in about 1 week of pocket carry - furthermore, the company refused to help with parts or service, as I hadn't ordered it from their official distribution retailer in the US, who was completely sold out and has continued to be for over 6 months. Complete garbage, do not buy.
WORST experience ever with a manufacturer so far. My Douglas Field S came defective from the factory. The lid wouldn't stay close and always popped open. That was an issue with a tiny ball bearing securing the cap. After several tries, All I had as a response from the seller was that the lighter was just fine and the problem was with me. Horrible customer service to say the least. Mine sits in a drawer, useles, afetr two monts of light use. I cannot say anything positive about this brand as I found myself talking with a dishonnest person who didn't not want to take ANY responsibilities for a defective item. On mmy side, I paid with real non§defective money and just received a piec of garbage for it. Thank you , but, no thanks.....
sorry to hear that, did you get it directly from Japan? I've dealt with them many times over the years, and they've been extremely helpful and pleasant.
@@The_Polished_Edge Thank you. Yes I did. The only answer I got from the manufacturer was that it was near impossible for the lighter to be faulty. I had to contact him several times. He advised me to first try to oil the wick seal which I did to no durable success. After that, he told me I would have to adjust the ballscrew tension, which I also did. I kept messing with it in an attempt to make this lighter eventually work without any significant change and if finally came to pieces. It has not been a positive experience, to say the least. I paid in full, did exactly what I was told, and ended up having to try to find a solution by myself. They weren't helpful at all, quite the contrary. They delibaratingly ignored (should I say refused) a possible faulty product issue. Which I found dishonnest and rather cavalier. Glad you had a better one.
@@RenoLaringo i think maybe the best thing to do at the time would be to record a video on your experience with it. That illustration might help them identify the problem, as well as put a spotlight on the issue.
@@The_Polished_Edge Therefore I would need an extremely precise zoom in order to film the inner thread of the ballscrew in the cap. Without the ballscrew that I have lost, it would be difficult to show the incompatibility in size between both, which would be pointless to most. But that is a good idea indeed. Such a shame I lost the balscrew...
DO NOT BUY THIS LIGHTER!!! douglass lighter field 👎🏼👎🏼 If you use this lighter even for 5sec the upper section really dose heat up pretty seriously it will burn your fingers or if you put it in your pocket without cooldown period it will burn you bad. It’s poorly design and overpriced.
