I find tutorials by Weather the best in that the instructors are well prepared and well versed in the presentation. Joe and Chuck are the best I have seen. The best part of this tutorial is in the illustration of the different tools and how they are best used. A big thank you, again...from Alberta, Canada.
Beautiful work! And amazing job on the instruction on how to use just a few of these tools in such a short time video. I’ve been doing leather work but haven’t got into tooling yet, but how I’d love to sit and be your student!!!
I used to do leather craft as a kid,,, had a great set of tools that once belonged to my dad. I've been considering trying my had at it again. Thanks for the video.
This is a good tutorial Because it tells what each tool does and the catalog number to take note of when buying tools stamps and adding to your equipment. In some tutorials, the teacher will say, "Next tool is XXXX" but without the tool cat#, it can't help when buying more stamps, if you don't know the Cat#. Until you learn the tool and cat#s. Also, the salesperson will take you more seriously if you use the cat# rather than just, "It looks like so, so,so, ...e .! Appreciate the tutorials.
He is well skilled and made that look easy. Now i can garantee you that mine would not come out looking like that and there would be a lot of cursing involved 😂.
Just cursing? Every time I try to do something with sharp tools it's end of me looking like a Gettysburgh survivor after the Pickett charge... Covered in bendages and splitted slice of fingers everywhere...
You really should have added the antiquing so show how it all comes together because I couldn’t see half of the details you were talking about but thank you for the great video and happy Easter 🐣
This is FANTASTIC! I would love to work with leather this way! I’m so curious about how you discovered leather carving. What makes you love and keep going back to this special form of art? Do you work with any other mediums in an artful way? (Singing, drawing, soap making)What do you do with the piece when you’ve finished carving on it? I’m, as far back as I know, a 5th generation multi media artist. My father’s been woodcarving for the last 3-5 years. My arthritis is really affecting my fine motor skills, significantly, as of late. This would be such a cool way to let out the things I like drawing. ~Sheeara, Alaska

@@WeaverLeatherSupply Thank you for all the help and resources! I’m very excited to check it out! 😊 Nothing is ever as easy as a skilled artist, like Joe Meling, makes it look. But he’s definitely inspiring! I’m excited to start practicing a new (to me) art form. Thanks again for helping me along 🥳 ~Sheeara, Alaska
Hi Rick, Thank you for the feedback! We'll go into more detail in the future videos as far as the weight of leather, how to hold the tools and much more! We'll pass along the request for more close-ups also!
Hi Tanya, It;s item number 67-6976. These should be back in stock in about 3 weeks or you can sign up to get an email notification when they are back in: www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/67-6976/steep-bevel-stamping-tool-/pr_40222
Ive been carving for a little while, but am still struggling with the shading. I get imprints, but not much of the darker coloring. Not sure if its the leather, pressure or how I'm casing it. How is the leather in the video being cased?
Hi Devin, The leather in the video is simply wet down when I sit down to tool. Once it absorbs into the leather (maybe a minute), I’m ready to tool. If it gets too dry as I’m tooling I will simply re-wet it and continue. Correct moisture content, quality of leather, along with tooling pressure will all work together to achieve a natural burnished look. You are on the right track and just need to adjust those variables to achieve the look you’re after. - Joe
That weight should be fine for carving. You'll want to make sure the leather is cased (wetted) properly. If the leather is too dry, it won't cut very well and also make sure your swivel knife is sharp. To sharpen the swivel knife, put some jewelers rouge on a piece of scrap leather and pull your knife across at the angle of the blade. I'll link a blog article Jim Linnell wrote for us on casing leather if you'd like to check that out: blog.weaverleathersupply.com/how-to-wet-leather/ Hope this helps!
Hi there, All of these tools are available on our website and can be shipped worldwide. weaverleathersupply.com/learn/how-to-videos/tools/floral-carving

Great video. You explained everything so well. Even for someone who’s been doing this for a little while I still love watching good tutorials because we never stop learning. I am really looking forward to your next video! Thank you!!
@@samthejackalope5427 such kind words.🤗☺️ Thank you. I believe that learning new things is so rewarding-especially in leather work where there is always room for improvement. Perfecting our craft is a never ending journey.
come on guys... why would'nt you link to his own youtube channel??? you linked to everything else in the description, you really should have linked to his page as well.
I dont buy starter kits. You always find an "upgrade" as soon as you use them. At least youre told in this video right away that you should buy the bevel he ended up using. He didnt even use the original one aside from showing its inadequacy. Save money and dont buy all the things in a kit youre told to upgrade too. Buy the tools or styles people actually use in this type of video or instruction.
Thanks for the video! I am hoping to dip my toes into leather crafting and this video helped me understand what tools to start with on the basic level! Thank you!
I was a Wheelwright Apprentice back in the 60’s and yes I do remember the 60’s, but the Wheelwright I worked for believed that we should know how to do all the jobs for Wagons. So we made out bolts, rims, planks to include all of the harness. I can still hear him saying “Start the cuts deep then go shallow and always converge”
Hello, thank you for your question. Below is a link of the exact leather he used in this video, www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/75-4931/weaver-select-veg-tan/pr_59125
@Joe Meling, please correct me if i am wrong but you had a big career as a Bull Rider? BTW Great Video, and I hope Chuck is doing well, I look forward to seeing working from both of you,,, Great job!
Fantastic addition to the lineup. I'd really appreciate it if one of the first vids is on the care and sharpening of the swivel knife, particularly a Ceramic Swivel Knife. I sharpen my leatherwork knives, no problem, but the ceramic swivel is giving me fits. Any advice on which polish to use, green, white, or rouge, etc. I can't find any info on the ceramic knife and that's the only one I have. This will be a great series, thanks so much! Karen
Gracias JOE, por tu explicación muy interesante y además por enseñar las herramientas, acompañado del paso a paso para su uso y donde se dé de usar saludos desde Panamá 😃😃👍👍Thank you JOE, for your very interesting explanation and also for teaching the tools, accompanied by the step by step for their use and where to use greetings from Panama😃😃👍👍
Hi there, We have a pattern similar to this for a journal cover - you can download it using the link below. www.weaverleathersupply.com/docs/default-source/project-templates/weaverjournalkitpattern.pdf
Hi Victor, Not necessarily, mostly it's what is most comfortable for each person. In the videos below Chuck goes over some of the different styles available but ultimately it is whatever feels the best in your hand! Hope that helps. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qcs3NL5-Nq8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gsz2NBPkWPw.html
Good morning, I follow your videos with great "awe" and wonder. You are so skilled... My poor projects looks like done by a kindergarten toddler. Can I make a question? I'm trying to learn how to carve, and I have a pair of swivel kinfes, one with a regular flat blade and one with an angled one. My problem is in the leather. In Italy is awfully expensive and I'm wondering if there is some kind of cheap material where I can try the cuts. I don't know... Something like linoleum (a soft, thick kind of rubber) or something else... Thank you for your time.
Hi Luca, Unfortunately, I am not sure about this one, I've only ever used leather. It would be hard to get the same temperament and I'm afraid linoleum would be hard on a knife blade. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you!
@@WeaverLeatherSupply no problem at all, thank you a lot for your kind answer, and keep the videos running. They are a BIG source of inspiration. Thank you again.
I did not hear if you 'cased' the leather before you started with the swivel knife. Do you do that first? Pencil on the leather or pen through tracing paper to transfer the pattern?
How to cut several pieces of the same shape. When each cut separately (sp) all seem a little different in size, shape. Do you stack the leather and cut all at once. Or ?? Thanks for all the great info and videos.
Thank you for the tutorial. It was great for beginners. I learned a lot about some of the tools that I have. My kit came with a lot of these tools. I was wondering what they were for and how to used them. This gave me a good start. Best regards, Richard
This was an awesome video. Way better than the deluxe carving demo video with the HORRIBLE music. This video is exactly how it should’ve been done. I can hear the instructor clearly and the demo was super awesome.
