Prospects in Theoretical Physics 2018: From Qubits to Spacetime Topic: Introduction to Information Theory Speaker: Edward Witten Date: July 16, 2018 For more video please visit video.ias.edu
You mean to tell me you understand any of it?, Ed Witten is one of the greatest mathematicians of our time, if you're smart enough to comprehend it then I salute you. physicalist Andrei Linde refers to him as the "God" of string theory
@@malkwinter8998 Thank you. Yes, he is. And when he’s talking about his current research into string theory everyone struggles. But this lecture is more standard quantum computation stuff, and it’s actually not that bad if you already know about entropy and quantum mechanics. If not, this is probably not a good place to start.
Quantum information theory starts at 29:07, so far I've followed through the entire classical part, and I have to say that this is purely amazing. I've never really have had to deal with information theory (not even the classical one), but all those few times I came across the concept of entropy, the speaker was never really able to convey a profound idea, at best giving rise to shallow understanding. Edward Witten was capable of giving a thorough explanation in about 40 seconds, when you know the mathematics behind that's probably what you need, and I'm in awe of all the power stemming from it, which could deeply change a person's knowledge and vision of the world.
there was a woman who got into a traffic accident. when she woke up from coma, she discovered that she can play piano at virtuoso level. I somehow hope I'll be like that woman when it comes to smoothly understand this and similar lectures, but instead of a traffic accident I'll consume some nootropic supplement combination.
Daniel just keep studying! If you’re passionate, and you believe in yourself, the rest will follow! It might take years but it will happy if you don’t give up!
Don't take it personally. It took dozens of very smart people and years to develop/discover much of the stuff fitting on a single transparency only. It takes also years of study to understand anything in a deep way.
Many years ago, when I was a young, sexy Physics Major ... well ... young, at least, I attended the weekly Department Colloquia. One I distinctly remember started (and ended with), "We see that the following Lagrangian is Lorentz Invariant ..." I moved to the back row after that sentence! ;)
I must say that even though I have a PhD in psychology when I listen to Dr. Witten during his lectures and talks I find that I can’t understand a single thing the man says. And I know I’m not stupid it’s just that he’s so smart. He speaking like another language from an alien world but hopefully somebody understands what it is he saying but it’s your not me.
Ed’s twistor string theory which was used for loop quantum gravity, was it successful ? I’m interested in the chirality of the graviton under this paradigm I believe is where I saw it.
I think the answers to to exercises 1 and 3 are that it is not possible. Wait, no. 1 is definitely possible. A physical realization would be to simply swap the system with a pure system. 3 should also be possible: make a measurement in the appropriate basis and throw away the result.
are they kidding? shannon is not talking about "information" he is talking about "Communication" so.... information is any syntactic or symantic derivative of geometry.
