any virtual machine can be used to sandbox. Certain OS's and Linux distros are better than others. REMnux, the disto Zeltser helped to create would be a good one. I haven't used REMnux though, so I'm unfamiliar with its features. I imagine this video covers some of its capabilities.
Most often than not is because the person recording has no clue about how to setup the correct screen resolution or someone ends up batching it and screwing up the resolution.
