In this slide presentation I talk about the basic concepts of Motivational Interviewing (MI). After a brief definition, topics include: the Spirit of MI, The four basic OARS skills, and the "processes" of MI.
Man, why is it some people can make things so simple and easy to understand and textbooks live to make jargon so complicated especially if we are to implement this in practice! UGH! Thank you for making it easy.
Textbooks are given a word quota which is why they are so wordy. Try reading the first sentence of each paragraph only and then going over the important stuff.
The same reason why a person say learning diesel mechanic will do a much better job if he has on hands training instead of going to school and getting it from a book. You get the factual information you really need and not 80% of things you will never use. Your brain retains much more this way.
for change talk: Prepatory change talk ( DARN) D - Desire (I want to change) A - Ability (I can change) R - Reason (it's important to change) N - Need ( I Should change) Implementing change talk (CAT) C - Commitment ( I will make change) A - Activation ( I am ready to change) T - Taking Steps (I am taking specific actions to change)
I can see where motivational interviewing is a really good skill. Talking to someone instead of at someone has its benefits. When you talking at someone you put them at the defense, when you talking to someone you open that discussion up making it possible for them be less defensive and more open about the decisions of their life.
This summary of M.I. was outstanding. I recently took part in a M.I. webinar and left it more confused than when I began. The order and pace in which the information was presented was perfect for my learning needs. Thank you!!
I am a nursing student and this makes better sense than my tutors do. Its explained in a way that can be easily adopted into my practice. Thank you for your help!!
I have read through so many definitions and explanations of Motivational Interviewing and this video gets 5 stars!!! Simple and to the point. Grateful!!!
Great video, thank you. I've been out of school for some time and just got into a Master's of Counseling program and it seems like the assumption is that most of the students know this material already. I majored in philosophy and only minored in psychology at a school with a HEAVY emphasis on neuropsychology rather than clinical treatment. This is all really helpful and very approachable. Thanks or taking the time to make these videos.
I had to pause the video to THANK you for such a wonderful, helpful, simple, clear, awesome explanation for these basics. And it just happened that I've been practicing most of them with my best friend for years now lol
I’m going to share this with my NP to potentially help our relationship. Things like procrastination being mistaken for resistance, telling, power, authority, having mutual goals (?), feeling hopeful, change talk and reinforcement are all weak spots. He asserts being an expert in sleep issues as a reason for “telling”, which does cause resistance in me, rather than hearing my concerns. I back off entirely. Ironically this video was introduced to me to help medical students with motivational interviewing.
I've completed 4 courses of MI and I can tell you that this presentation is direct, clear and easy to understand, only if you already have an idea of what MI is. But if you're newly being exposed to MI, this might be a bit confusing for you. Despite all of that though, the truth is none of it matter if the patient or the other person isn't cooperating with you.
This is excellent. Motivational interviewing is very complex, but this presentation is so focused and practical it gives you hope that you can do it. Other presentations are so over whelming that you feel its impossible to do motivational interviewing. Thanks so much!
This is the best intro to MI that I have ever heard! Thank you SO much! This will be invaluable in my work with simulation and helping people understand how they may be interviewed! So cool!
I would like to thank you so much for your video i took 24 hours of MI training this week and the instructor confused me and in my opinion was terrible i was lost and confused. you have saved me and made me relax and understand what MI is all about .thank you greatly
Awesome video! I struggled for YEARS in finding a good counseling technique! Thank you so much for simplifying basic counseling skills for me! Now, I have a sense of foundation to help people reach their goals!
This, when implemented makes an absolute difference in the way any coach or mentor help clients. This is going to be the foundation of my own practice - both as a future nurse and business mentor/coach. Thank you!
Thank you for creating this extremely insightful video. I am a PMHNP student and found your video to be a wonderfully digestible gamechanger. I now feel more knowledgeable in implementing motivational interviewing thanks to you- Kudos!!!
Thanks Dr. BIll for some great ideas. Tomorrow I will meet, for the first time, with a doctor who signed up with our language institute to learn better English. I'm in Thailand and have been teaching English for awhile now and it had never occurred to me to find out the true motivation, or lack thereof, of students who come to us to learn English. We always complain about the lack of motivation of some learners in spite of the hefty sums they are paying for our services. I'm thinking now more along the lines of doctor and patient and not teacher and student.
Excellent and thank-you. Garlic girl has a good point. This was a very sound overview and will make digging into a few texts much easier. Also helps being a better therapist! Can hear things in MI recognizable from Rogers, Gestalt, CBT / DBT, Narrative and Solution Focus etc.. Thanks for a very nice and succinct presentation. !
Thank you Dr,it was excellent and a great resource for me in my social work practice.you are a great teacher and have presented in a simple way to understand MI effectively
Wow, I'm sooo thankful for this share! Can you believe I sat in our college library for 3 hours and researched MI in journals, articles, books, encyclopedia, and nothing about the OARS came up which is referred to in this video as BASIC COUNSELING. I'm so irritated because i'm almost done this semester after taking all the PSY classes and the class i'm in now Intro to Counseling, we've never even discussed OARS nor have we done any client/therapist role playing more than twice. This class is pretty much exactly like my PSY classes, i hope when I grad in august onward to my third year i'll actually learn and practice techniques. Thank you so much for posting... now I can finally end my research paper with more confidence and not just the psychological theory of MI but the basic OARS I should've been taught asap! :D
Best Winner Wow! Is your degree specifically in counseling psychology? If so, you might want to bring that issue up with your program chair. I am in a master's in counseling psych program, and we covered those basic counseling skills in our first two quarters of the first year. It should be covered right off the bat.
Really helpful! I have done so much research which was great, but nothing made the foundational elements quite as simple, memorable, and applicable as this video. Thank you!
I'm in a class for AOD counseling. I keep hearing about MI, but this really helps. I have a pretend client and have to write SOAP notes for him. This helps so much. I was so lost.
Hi Bill….Cathy Cole fellow MINTie, serving in Botswana in the Peace Corps and focusing on behavior change around hiv…I’m using this video to introduce MI to a group of health mentors So great to have this resource to make my work easier 😅
Bill you did a beautiful job with this video. The basics, understanding & summary are excellent! I really was looking for a refresher, and this covered it all. I thank you! I applaud your work. 😊👍

A wonderful presentation - presents the main elements in a clear, accessible and engaging way that makes sense to the person in the street! Many thanks.
Thank you so very much for this wonderful easy to comprehend video. As I am now working at a program that utilizes M.I. and I am about to go into a two training session with a head start and a little bit of confidence thanks to this video. I look forward to watching more from you.
I like open questions. They open up a conversation. They allow for more self expression. Closed questions feel pointed, as though you are being judged. They can often imply that there is a wrong answer. Sometimes a closed question can force someone to choose between two bad options trapping them into digging a hole for themselves. These sort of questions don't allow for nuance and can feel like an interrogation. All of this can feel uncomfortable.
Dr M - I appreciate how clearly you laid out your presentation. Your OARS examples are practical and commonly heard with cients. I'm also an educator and would love to use bits of your presentation for my students (giving you full credit of course!). Thank you!
