This brief introductory video offers design tips for electronic engineers designing with reed switches. Dr. Stephen Day, Ph.D. offers a brief overview on reed switches with a detailed explanation as to how they react to magnetic fields. Also covered is how to select a magnet for your particular application.

This is how RU-vid videos should be. Straight to the point. No, "Hey what's up guys, let me waffle on for 5 mins before we start". Very informative, thank you.

I'm a DIYer aiming to use RS for the first time (lighting cupboards etc.). This explanation is crystal clear and has answered all my questions - THANK YOU. It has also educated me in how they are in use everywhere, which I find fascinating!! Hoping to dabble with electronics as a hobby, in the future, and this presentation has given me loads of ideas.

Excellent, thank you. I am exploring reed switches on a project where I previously used non-magnetic mechanical mechanisms which proved very ambiguous in raising events. I bought some reed switches and couldn't work out why the circuit closure patterns were somewhat intermittent. This explained it perfectly. Thanks again.

Why are there 2 positions where it turns the switch on when the bar is moved vertically.? According to field lines, when it is on the left side, the switch should not close.

Thank you very much for your explanation. I have a question relating to the reed swith in the flowmeter of a dishwasher machine. Two contacts of the reed switch are open normally (i.e. outside of magnetic field). In the flowmeter component, the magnetic element attached to the propeller and it rotates (instead of sliding in vertical or horizontal directions) as the water runs through. Is the reed switch closed as the magnetic element rotates? Or does it keep closing and opening intermittently (i.e close - open - close - open..., to create a electronic pulse)?

Great video, thank you. What kind of magnets are normally used in large bore (50+mm) air cylinders? And what reed switches are suitable to use with such cylinders?

Hi.Who is the manufacturer of magnetic reed switch.

I meant to ask ... is it ok to encase these in epoxy resin? They look awfully delicate and I already know that the glass entry points are very weak.

I'm curious if this switch could be used to build an electronic ignition system where the reed switch would be used in place of breaker points. The car I am standing next to uses two breaker points and two ignition coils (two cylinders). I've been experimenting with those points conversion kits that was intended to go in a Bosch distributor that uses four magnets mounted a plastic ring that passes by a plastic housing. I'm wondering if this plastic housing contains a reed switch or if there is any other circuitry involved. If the engine was turning at 5000 RPMs (maximum) and firing every 180 degrees , would the switch be able to open and close that fast? An online calculator says 5000 RPMs is 83 HZ. But I would imagine if the engine is firing every 180 degree it would be double that. So could one lead on the reed switch be connect to the negative side of the ignition coil and the other lead be connected to ground/earth? Would it need to go through a transistor? One idea would be to use the reed switch as the trigger but connect both leads to a GM HEI control module. If the reed switch could not handle the current. I tested the current my Citroen 2CV's ignition coil. At least at 12 volts, the current was .4 amps. I have not test the Trabant. It's uses a 6 volt system so I'd estimate the current might be closer to 1 amp.

For NPN sensor we'll give 0V to blue wire then output 0V passes through brown wire to PLC..ok it's clear but how bulb will glow????... I didn't find answer in RU-vid can anyone tell me

Are the contacts both a nickel-iron alloy, or is one of them made of nickel, the other of iron?

Sir Could it be that the light is turned off when the magnet comes near the switch, and as soon as the magnet goes away, the switch will again light on

Can u put the matgematical proof for the range of reed switch(10mm)?
@Cotorelay
@Cotorelay 7 лет назад
Reed switch operate ranges are a function of their operate sensitivity, which varies based on the length of the gap between the two reed contacts. The magnetic "sensitivity lobes" also vary in their shape and proportion depending on the direction of approach, shape, and orientation of the magnet that's interacting with the reed switch. If you'd like to know more, we have a great app note discussing best practices for reed switch/magnet design on our website called "Rules of Attraction." You can find it here: cotorelay.com/resource-library/ under the Application Notes section. If you still have further questions, feel free to send an inquiry to appsupport@cotorelay.com
