INTRODUCTION TO SORA v2.5 | SORA METHODOLOGY | SORA VERSION 2.5 PUBLISHED | THE DRONE OFFICE
JARUS published the safety methodology SORA version 2.5 in June 2024. SORA stands for "Specific Operations Risk Assessment". SORA is a methodology developed and published by JARUS to assess risk and provide proportionate risk mitigations for UAS, or drone operations in the Specific Category.
The Joint Authorities for Rulemaking of Unmanned Systems (JARUS) consists of a group of experts from 60+ countries, including from national aviation authorities and regional aviation safety organisations.
The main evolution from SORA v2.0 is the ground risk quantification.
After a few years using the SORA 2.0 methodology published by JARUS, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has announced that it will develop an update of the methodology, introducing SORA 2.5. This update introduces a quantitative definition of ground risk assessment and makes a general revision of the text to simplify the language and make it easier to understand.
SORA is systematic and clear, but it is complex and can be daunting for some. This presentation provides an overview of the SORA methodology and process to help everyone get a basic understanding. Anne-Lise Scaillierez.
The output of the SORA is expected to consist of 3 sets of documents:
(1) Operations Manual
This shall include the procedures to be used by the operator’s personnel to perform the operation safely.. The content will be based on OSO implementation, mitigation, and containment.
(2) Evidence of compliance
All requirements for an adequate level of robustness must be justified. Evidence of compliance will vary depending on the level of assurance required.
(3) SORA Safety Case
It is a description of how the operator has performed the SORA describing all the steps.
