I work on those cars and engines since 1980, am yet retired but still bussy cause I own several Manta's and I am a member of an Opel club. Nice to see that those old Opels have found their way in the US. Great presentation of the CIH engine, keep up the good work!
Thanks, had a hiccup on some of the video recorded for the next parts.. and working on fixing that.. Thus the delay.. As my youtube "support staff" is busy.. :/ I also have a new motor I am about to build so plan on filling some of the missing parts with video we take when I get that motor from the shop.
Great video, thanks for the info! I had couple manta b.s over the years and this current one i've had over 10 years. It currently has little tuned 2.0 cih at the moment and plan has been for years to have new engine on it with around 200hp. I have one completely 2.4 motor from frontera and also one extra XE motor. I think it would be cheaper to build nice pulling motor from the XE, but in the other hand it required more work/parts with the gearbox etc. I do feel that the motor should be cih other than never 16v, the sound and look would stay close to original... Well, maybe some day i have enough money to build the new motor, at the moment thats not the option... Keep up with the great videos 👍
hey Metod i see that we are both seeking more knowledge about the manta.. the diference is that your doing something about yours and im still seated in th couch lol im just wating for money and time tho :)
Apparently you never talked to Bob Legere at C&R Small cars or a few of the others. Today Cam choices are limited if you want off the shelf. But ISKY in the US and CAT Cams in europe can get you anythign you can think of.
On the high carbon heads that like to crack, have you ever heard of new valve seats being machined in? I want to do a 2.0 upgrade and wonder if i should just buy a head that doesnt like to crack.
The heads that had the most issues were the 1972 to 1974 heads. I have no proof but believe the EFI Heads did better due to an another change in metallurgy. But the short version is, get your head magnafluxed if it passes, your fine. Put some new seats in it and continue on.
Yes. and No.. the 1.7, 1.5, 1.9, 2.0, etc.. are all dimensionally the same. But you can always bore the 1.7L, etc.. bigger. The different cranks from a 1.9L, 2.0L , 2.4L and 2.3L will fit sometimes without any issue, some ( like the 2.4 and 2.3) with mods.
@@GoinManta thank you very much for information. I was about to choose one of two 2.0 engines, one was converted from 1.7 with a 1.9 head and the other original 2.0s from 1983. I went for the 2.0s. The converted one was rebuilt with 97mm liners, i was afraid a little
The first generation Frontera did have the motor, but I was pretty sure it was 1992 when the option ended. But could be wrong. You are correct the CIH did exist 1965-1967 but mainly in 6 cylinder form if memory serves.
The worst application of this unit was the Holden Torana. The car was designed around a 6 cylinder engine. The 1900 was only fitted so Holden could compete in the 4 cylinder market. Compete, it did not. It was widely known as the slowest family car in Australia.
Yep, many times they swapped the 6 cyl for a 4 cyl to save fuel as well, and of course sacrificed power. Bedford Vans being a good example as well of a bad application.
