I was born in Hong Kong in 1957. My father was with State/VOA at the time, the early years of long career as a cold war diplomat after Marine combat duty and the GI Bill. He and my mother loved sailing and bought a junk from a chinese fishing family that had outgrown it. , They tried to join a yacht club but were told the club "frowned on the native craft". They started their own little club for "the native craft". This was one of dad's favorite stories, partly because it was covered in the South China Morning Post at the time. He passed as the proud owner of a small cat boat out of Yarmouthport, MA.

A very nice introduction... A tip.. I realise it's early days, but please try to pay more attention to the music/voiceover balance. The music all but drowns out the voiceover in the last few minutes.

I crew on “Aletheia” a 36’ Junk rigged schooner. (Converted) We get many comments and questions gunkholing from The Gulf of Mexico and up the US Atlantic coast. Aletheia is fun and easy to sail. She has a battery pwr 21 hp electric screw.

See SV Seeker. It will be a junk rig sailer and was built in Oklahoma and will launch this year. The Polynesians used a similar rig.

The Polynesian crab claw rig is oriented vertically and pivots horizontally. The junk rug is oriented horizontally and moves vertically.

Hello, i have a question about the potential for junk rigging and historical warships. I was thinking of writing about an alternate history set in the early 1800s. I was thinking about if somebody could have designed a “super ship” like a kind of supersized HMS Warrior with the technology of the day by making a huge sailing ship but instead of rows of guns at the broadside which was standard practice of the day, have a turret in the bow and stern. It seems all the pictures of sail rigging in this time period would make turrets impractical since they would get in the way, of rigging, but would it have been possible using junk rigging?

I think something was lost in the adaptation from the traditional, beautiful and functional original Chinese design, to these modern almost over tall "Bermudian" masts with elongated junk rig.

interesting points, esp. with refference to world sailing, but I did notice the style of rig, with that many battens, one would surely be able to "dump" the top triangles of sail quickly, esp. in bad weather, giving the most calming affects, as the top of the rig is where the most wind affect is. ( but must be a real can of worms having to deal with presumably that many reefing lines{one set for each batten}).
@rustyholt6619
@rustyholt6619 Год назад
you missed the point of the junk rig , there are no reefing lines , a set of lazy jacke catch the sail as its lowered bundling it to the boom all that is necessary is loose the halyard and set it where it needs to be , the lazy jack holds the battens the sheets are mor complex with each batten getting a sheetlet that is run to a single line on small craft or one for each tack on larger vessels all those keep the foils in shape and meen that the cloth dont need to be stretched as hard
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 8 месяцев назад
@@rustyholt6619 The junk rig sheeting is not a lazy jack. A lazy jack sits on both sides outside the sail to guide its raising and lowering. It does not otherwise touch the sail. The junk rig sheet is more like a distributed mainsheet with many smaller lines to each batten, brought together in subdivisions. It's a bit like the continuous reefing lines (single line reefing) of western sails, but probably lower friction due to sheaves at each subdivision. This means that reefing is automatic as the halyard is lowered and mainsheet tensioned.

Hi. A question... Say you added a traditional jib front and a mizzen aft, would that help when trying to go close hauled? Which one would help more and why? Cheers
@junkrigassociation
@junkrigassociation 2 месяца назад
Some boats do have such an arrangement but sailing best to windward is much more about the overall design of boat and sails and the best arrangement of sails is the one designed to work well with the particular boat. Some of the Colvin designs seem to look and sail very elegantly with a jib, for example.

I'm curious as I could possibly be, so I must ask..... is it possible to "heave to" with a junk rig? (I learned to heave to with two sails set at opposite angles )
@NightSky018
@NightSky018 Год назад
I'm completely speculating here, in fact I'm sure you have more knowledge than i do - but do you think it would be possible to do so with something like the wind maybe 45° off the bow, sail parallel with wind, helm pointed into wind? Any forward motion would steer ship into the wind, thereby back-filling sails, and vice versa. I'm still learning things so forgive me if this is an absurd thought. However i too am interested to get an answer to that question
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 8 месяцев назад
@@NightSky018 What you describe IS heaving to, if the sails are on opposite tacks. The bow of the boat oscillates back and fourth across the wind due to it acting on each sail differently. Also, the helm must be set opposite the mainsail. That's what starts and maintains the oscillation.

I see little difference between a modern full baten sail and a junk rig.
@graemekenyon1649
@graemekenyon1649 2 года назад
They are very different. For a start, what you see on a junk rig is not actually a batten at all. "Batten" is a misnomer. They are spars, and leaving aside the special case of articulated battens, they are intended to remain rigid. They perform the same function as a boom, except there is one for each panel, and usually each is sheeted. The batten you see on a fully-battened bermiudan sail is inteded to bend to the shape of the sail, and to allow a large "roach" to the leech of the sail. A completely different function to the s0-called batten on a junk sail. There is no analogy between the batten of a fully battened bermudan sail, and those essential spars of the junk sail.
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 8 месяцев назад
@@graemekenyon1649 Technically you're right, but both to help shape and extend the sail horizontally. The main difference is that the batten is intended to flex to the curve of an airfoil, as you note.
