In this NMR tutorial we look at the TOCSY spectrum. In the TOCSY spectrum it is possible to obtain information about the spin systems in your molecule. Here we will look at how the spectrum has its charcteristic pattern and how we can interpret that pattern to deduce the structure of a molecule and all of the spins systems.

when you say its own spin system, are you referring to the entire functional group that is the amino acid or are you referring to the individual functional groups on the amino acid itself? i think you mean the latter but please confirm cheers

3:22 onwards... A spin system is basically a set of nuclei (H atoms in the case above) that are connected to each other via sp3 (or sp2) carbons. This is because sp3 carbons possess 's' character and the electrons can therefore penetrate the nucleus. This interaction of electrons with the nucleus connects adjacent hydrogen nuclei to each other along a carbon chain. Spin systems stop at hetero atoms such as N or O or when a carbon does not contain hydrogens. Therefore the spin system is just that part where you have CH-CH connectivity. Which for amino acids is the alkyl moiety.

So if I had something like -C=C- with TOCSY, the spin system will not be interrupted? And what about triple bonds between C?
