FiberRanger sensors use a highly sensitive technology based on artificial intelligence and pattern recognition to detect (and classify) every footstep signals from humans or large animals, manual digging, machine digging, underground tunneling, trains, vehicles, fence climbs, and fence cuts while rejecting nearby nuisance sources such as traffic and weather elements. The active sensor is a standard telecommunication single-mode fiber-optic cable, which because of low optical loss in the fiber naturally provides a long-range protection of a perimeter, such as borders, airports, or large facilities. The sensor is low cost per mile, has high sensitivity, high location resolution in order of meters, and can be easily buried in the field with standard equipment. The sensor is covert (no electromagnetic signature) and hence less susceptible to sabotage or defeat by a cunning adversary. In addition, the sensor is terrain-following perimeter intrusion detection system that can be installed on an uneven ground without requiring a line of sight. For example, the sensor can be deployed on a fence, either under or in the vicinity of a fence, in an open field, or along a train track.
