Intuitive Tarot: Throw Out the Books?

My opinions on this growing trend of teaching tarot beginners to throw out the books and just trust their intuition. But what does “intuitive tarot reading” even mean? Or is this trending perspective of “throw out the books, trust your intuition” just a euphemism for ego-centered instant gratification?

I think of something my dad told me. When cooking a dish using a recipe, follow the recipe exactly as it is the very first time you prepare it. After you’ve done so you can then decide what you want to remove/substitute/add the next time you prepare it. It gives you a base. I find that is similar to how I now approach tarot. Trying to establish a foundation to build upon.

To me, reading purely "intuitively" is like painting without learning technique, playing an instrument without knowing the notes, building a house without knowing anything about architecture. Yes, one may create a decent product but one cheats oneself of a whole world of knowledge from which to pull and expand on any reading, intuitive or not. That lack of knowledge will never allow one to fully create, one will always be limited to one's own scope of vision and experience. Some of the greatest works we have, are by people who very effectively broke the rules, by knowing them in and out. They are a combination of what's coming from the soul or heart and what's learned.

I love your thoughts on intuitive tarot. It reminds me of an older video when you said something along the lines of “You’re not reading it intuitively. You’re reading improvisationally.” It blew my mind the first time I heard that 🤯

I wanted to take a moment and thank you. Watching your video made me so uncomfortable. I call myself an intuitive reader, because yes I studied Art and Aesthetics, I have a grasp of symbolic meaning and pattern recognition. However haven't read completely a single book. The sense of fraud I feel from that is nauseating, and everything you said was right. So, starting tonight I'm ordering some books, and will build that foundation. As luck would have it I do like to learn so, thank you again

You make a really good point. It tookme a long time to realize that intuitive reading comes after the learning. I was definitely piece-meal in my learning, but my intuitive style developed on top of the knowledge base I acquired. I didn't initially realize that this was an option. I thought I would have to start out memorizing all the definitions, and that would be that. But afterbeginning to recognize individual cards, and then learning about the numerics and suit symbolism, and then looking into deck specific symbolism, the intuitive side just came about without additional effort. I think many people new to the cards don't realize how the intuitive side can grow out of the knowledge side. Thank you for so eloquently explaining it.

You've articulated my thoughts and feelings exactly! I've been studying Tarot for 20+ years... the learning never stops! I think a true professional does not only study about their craft or art, though. In order to consider myself a "professional" reader (and channeler) I got a degree in counseling psychology and took a life coaching certification. Even though these might seem unrelated, I felt having other people rely on me to assist them with their very important life decisions and choices was such a huge ethical responsibility. I felt like a needed more knowledge and training in that area too, so I went for it. And everything I learnt also deepened my understanding of the Tarot! Thank you for this video, I'm a subscriber now too! 💖

You are absolutely right! “Intuition” has many interpretations and in most cases is just a projection. To achieve real intuitions some unique conditions are required. Humility, clear mind and emotions are some of those conditions. Thank you for pointing it!

19:47 - Oh, yeah. Definitely. Modern culture (especially in the U.S.) is one of "I deserve it yesterday" and "I know what I'm doing," both statements usually coming from individuals who actually match neither statement. We are so used to instant gratification and "yeah, whatever" that losing the foundation of tarot -- and pretty much everything else! -- by ignoring the ideas, ideals, and standards developed over multiple generations is becoming a very real possibility. Tabula rasa is a good way to start learning , but NOT when it's applied to the knowledge one is supposedly trying to learn!

This was SO SO good. Right on the money. However I was surprised that through the description of “intuition” that the word “improvisation” wasn’t said! To me when readers say “throw out the books and read intuitively”, what they are really saying is “improvise”. I.e. make it up as you go along. That is not Tarot. That’s jazz albums with pretty covers! Lol.
@LillTheDancer
@LillTheDancer 4 года назад
Jazz isn’t like that. Players learn their instruments backwards and forwards before they are able to improvise well. As Charlie Parker once said, “Master your instrument, master the music & then forget all that & just play.”

Benebell, I completely agree with your philosophy on this topic. I very much respect your dedicated approach to the Tarot, but it’s not by the information that you present in this video that I learned that what you say is true. It is by experience. When I first jumped into Tarot I approached it with the popular philosophy that I could read the cards by intuition only. It was only after some time and trying several decks that I realized that my intuition was limited, BECAUSE my knowledge was limited. BTW, i recently published a book called “Tarot Deck in a Book”. In which I had written regarding the use of intuition with Tarot…”learned knowledge is the cake and intuition is the icing that makes your readings sweet!” This is a beginner book that I wrote for my own learning, but also for my daughter who is incarcerated because Tarot cards aren’t allowed in prison. I am hoping that it will appeal to a similar audience that would also benefit from it. Inside the book i have included 2 of your Tarot quotes because I am a solid fan! 🎉 Thank you for this video!

I have seen where people say they don't read the book or suggest to toss them out and it actually gives me a sense of anxiety, it's like a cliff hanger. I just kept thinking, "But don't you want to know?!?!" I'm actually glad you touch on this subject, I always thought my reliance on finding answers from books was a crutch and it just seemed like other people "got it". That may be somewhat true, as in others connect easier, but I am very thoroughly enjoying my journey answering the "why." I know what the cards mean, or what they are said to mean, that was never difficult but couldn't just accept that, I wanted to know WHY does it mean that. It always makes me wonder why some people don't get that anxiety-driven need to know hehe.

Knowledge relating to esoteric tarot is pretty essential. But, for reading Tarot de Marseille, this isn't really the way forward. The Open Reading style espoused by Yoav Ben Dov can benefit from esoteric knowledge when reading the TdM but visual cues are equally as important. Reading TdM using the 'No Meaning' style of Camelia Elias or Enrique Enriquez is pretty much intuitive storytelling. Benebell briefly mentioned that this video only applies to RWS decks but I feel this needs to be emphasized.

I loved your whole MFA analogy, as someone who has a masters in art, it made me laugh so hard because there are even people in the art world who feel that art education is pointless. I think when it comes to anything remotely subjective and l is connected to that notorious word 'talent' encounters this discourse. I think when you approach anything in life learning from what has come before only helps accelerate your path to gratification. I sometimes think, specifically with tarot, that fear plays into the equation in some regard - in the sense people are afraid of going outside of their own world view, tapping into things that they were raised to fear. In a sense if they work from a total 'intuitive' approach it gives them control over that fear. I also think for some there may be a fear of not being able to understand some of the books. I often hear things like "I'll never read Crowley because I'll never understand it." (Among other excuses.) I often have this conversation with people that ask me about "Advanced Books" and when I point them in the direction of things like the Golden Dawn texts, the writings of Crowley, or even books on symbolism, tarot history and art history I usually get the classic "WTF face" response. I think even in the context of someone who is a hobbyist it's important to read some books, its not to say they need to master them, or even fully understand them, but if you're going to invest your time into a hobby wouldn't you want to invest it in a meaningful way? I think the idea of "instant gratification" is really on point. So much of our world these days revolved around instant gratification, and I think this is just another expression of that manifesting itself in our community. I completely agree with you that if you want to be a professional reader, having a depth of knowledge to draw from in your practice is critical not only to the skill you are charging for, but also for your own personal growth. At the end of the day like I always say to be people, do what works for you, but doing that from a place of ignorance (or fear) is never acceptable in my opinion. I could go on about this for ages on this topic, and I really think its important to address. Thank you for your thoughtful approach on this elephant in the tarot room.

Yeah, personally I would also agree a hobbyist would be even better served reading a book or two. =) Me as a hobbyist? I definitely read The Books. ^_^* But I can also concede that it's certainly not the case for every hobbyist and I would rather that tarot hobbyist jump right in and get to reading the cards, journaling with them, etc. than feel like they can't even begin before reading ten tomes written in obscure English. So that was my main point. =)

art and science do not mix, like oil and water. Tarot is art. Two tarot readers do not produce the same result with the same deck and the same cards. Everyone sees something different. There is no right or wrong with tarot, exactly as there is no right or wrong with painting. Tarot is not science, and, can never be science. Throw out the books. Use the books. All that can ever result is critique, not judgement.

I think you’re being very kind. The types of people you were describing, who are the majority, simply don’t have the intelligence, or they’re just plain lazy. Or both. Tarot and other methods of divination are not a game. They need to be approached with reverence and respect, as well as knowledge and wisdom. Otherwise they will likely lead the person astray, which is exactly what such people deserve.

I'm reminded of the following when it comes to all things new age tarot/intuitive tarot... "I used to think communication was the key until I realized comprehension is..." What is needed before anyone hangs up a professional tarot card reader shingle is a lesson, in the use of deliberate language, use of a dictionary, use of an etymological dictionary, what is an allegory, what is a metaphor, and more importantly a lesson or many on communication from an analytical, reasoned and objective stance. Check the subjective, emotional, experiential drivel at the door along with one's ego. Pretty please!!!

Hi Benevell. I always combine the cards 5 from left to right. With a especific question using most of the time How or what at the beginning of the question and within a frame of time. Lets say the next 5 or 6 months. I read them without never ever skipping a card and(all cards have a motive to be where they are even if at first they seem disjointed) without reversals. I love your approach. Always teaching without wanting to be the owner of the Tarot. Regards from chile.

Thank you! Perfectly said. I believe this trend comes from the fact that people today are not really interested in going beyond surface and many, many young people want instant gratification. I've been studying astrology since I was 14, I'm now 29 and still learning. I'm more of a solitaire student, I don't do well with groups (I miss all the fun of the courses around my city, I'm from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), but I'm also very focused and analitical in my way of learning. My father (a true "magician") gave me a tarot a deck last year (and since then he has given my three more decks!kkk) and I'm enjoying every step of the fool journey wich is learning tarot. I'm working with your book and loving it. Keep up the amazing work.

I really love your analogy with art class and the logic of beginning with a canvas, colors and paintbrush for the pleasure of it makes more sense than reading all about art history which would discourage anyone. It makes sense that in the beginning, we 'play' with the cards to get a taste, and later if we like it, we decide to study and learn more about tarot. Anyway, it is pretty to hard to use tarot without reading any guidebook... its otherwise like reading oracle cards... Tarot needs studies at least the system, no matter how intuitive you are! Every new decks need some studies because they are different take on it. So I really don't see how you can approach tarot like oracle cards. And it gets easier and easier once you know more about tarot. And the more your learn, the more layers and down the rabbit hole you get. You make me want to pick up all my books and read some more!

"Transcending the books" Excellent way of putting it! Ken Wilber, the philosopher, popularized a phrase known as "transcend and include" in his Integral systems theory. His application of the phrase was geared towards the evolution of consciousness and its expression in the world, in that every stage of this evolution contains and makes use of the whole that came before, and at the same time transcends beyond the previous stages' limitations. It's holarchy, not hierarchy! I get a sense that might be what some people rebel against as well, to not be under the thumb of others' authority of what is true about the cards, and the logical conclusion of a radical egalitarian view of truth is that every one is their own authority. **cough**A bit of the shadow side of post-modernity.**cough** Anyway! The solely intuitive/psychic crowd seem to have the idea that we already contain this knowledge that came before through whatever you call it (Akashic field, collective unconscious, etc), which may or may not be true in some sense, but I've yet to hear a reader on that path relay information anywhere near the depth of what can be amassed in what is recorded in print and researched from our esoteric source material and the seekers that dedicated so much of themselves to uncovering it. Not that the broad scope of esoteric correspondences are necessary to reveal something useful to querents, but I like to think of it as analogous to poetry; a baseline grammar and understanding of language is necessary to get to a certain level of sensibly constructing a poem, but to transcend that which is immediately available or intuited, into something even more revelatory, requires a kind of word/vocabulary-mastery, which is broadened through study, reading, exposure to others' usage of figurative language, etc. That's not to say you can't write an incredible poem without a thesaurus and a dozen dictionaries, but the building of a robust vocabulary and word-mastery that results in something even further beyond which you knew you were capable, comes with exposure to that which is outside of your own databank. It's supplementary, all of those unique perspectives and revelations others have uncovered over the centuries about the Tarot... and they are means to expand our perspectives, not shut them into a box (even those you don't agree with, because they give more presence to those you discover to be true). Include them, and *then* transcend!

For years I participated as a reader in psychic fairs and psychic expos throughout the South and Midwest. Some of these events were quite large with over 60 or 70 readers present, most of whom were conducting tarot card readings. In this way I observed hundreds and hundreds of professional tarot card readers, and I also had readings done for me at these venues. Throughout those years I never once observed a tarot card reader who seemed to be using their intuition to define the cards. As soon as a card was dealt, the reader knew exactly what it meant, and never seemed to be thinking over its possible meanings. When you have done thousands of readings as those readers have, you know exactly what every card means and do not have to ponder your intuitive emanations. When you figure how the cards all fit together in a spread, the reader's ability at abstract thinking is probably more important than their intuition. Abstract thinking is the ability of someone to see patterns and interconnections in things. The greater is a reader's ability at abstract thinking, the more accurate the reader will be at making sense of the cards' interconnections. Intuition does not come into play.

I love reading intuitively, but my confidence as a reader comes almost exclusively from my time studying and reading about the Tarot. It's why I try to read all my deck's guidebooks, and why I work with them regularly. Each new perspective, each new tidbit adds layer upon layer to what I've learned before... the way you described it - pattern recognition - made so much sense to me!

I love my books. What bothers me most about the intuitive no need to grasp systems or throw out the books is the watered down effect it has on mass learning and in turn, respect for the craft. Not only that practitioners who say, throw out the books, and then plug their own! Hypocrisy next level. It's ridiculous but in the end there will always be surface level dabblers and enthusiasts who want to read professionally and have the scope one needs to work with clients ethically and with the degree of application it requires. Mediocrity is rife. Oh speaking of books the public domain PDF on the Tarot of the Bohemians is incomplete, it stops at around 100 pages. You might want to fix that on your site. Great video!!!

I have used the term intuitive tarot reader before, but for me, part of how my intuition works is relying on all of that book knowledge. But then I am a college professor and academic, so obviously I'm very much into the study side of things. 🤣 I love your distinction between "throwing out the books" and "transcending the books." BTW, it tells me that the chat replay is disabled, so I wasn't able to read it.

I AGREE, THAT SOME FORMS OF SPIRITUALITY REQUIRE THE NEED FOR A STRONG FOUNDATION AND GROUNDING IN EDUCATED KNOWLEDGE, SOME THINGS ARE JUST CUT AND DRY, AND THE TAROT IS ONE OF THESE EXAMPLES. IF I READ THE TAROT, THEN I AGREE THAT YOU NEED TO BE STRAIGHT-BY-THE-BOOK, IN ORDER TO DO A INTUITIVE READING. WITH YOUR ANALOGY ABOUT ART, I THINK, IT WOULD BEHOOVE EVEN THE WEEKENDER PAINTER TO HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE OF ART HISTORY, IN ORDER TO DISCOVER AN INFLUENCE FOR THEIR OWN STYLE AND METHODOLOGIES. BUT SOME FORMS OF SPIRITUALITY ARE MORE INTUITIVE, YOU CANNOT GO STRAIGHT-BY-THE-BOOK, WHEN YOU ARE EXORCISING A POSSESSED INDIVIDUAL. FOR INSTANCE, IF YOU FOLLOW THESE THREE EASY STEPS, THEN YOU TOO CAN BE A GREAT EXORCIST. I STAUNCHLY, DOUBT THAT, ALTHOUGH EDUCATION DOES HELP, IT IS NOT THE SOLUTION FOR ALL OF SPIRITUALITY. YOU CANNOT BE A PSYCHIC/MEDIUM, BY FOLLOWING SIMPLE STEPS AND METHODS. MOST SUCCESSFUL PSYCHIC/MEDIUMS MUST HAVE AN INNATE AND INBORN KNOWLEDGE AND GIFT TO BE ABLE TO SEE, HEAR, AND FEEL THE DEAD, SOMETHING THAT CANNOT BE LEARNED THROUGH BOOKS AND EDUCATION.

Yup. This is how I learned, too. It’s also how I continue to learn. In 20+ years with the tarot, the one thing I can say with any clarity at all is that there is always more learning, more practice, and more understanding that needs to take place. Which, of course, means more books. Obviously. On another note, what you said about reading books as a means of creating a thread to the collective unconscious reminds me of the concept of lineage energy in various Buddhist traditions. The lineage I presently belong to is very powerful and has been deeply transformative to my practice, which makes me all the more curious about the writings/books, and the engagement with the practice itself. It feels almost exponential in nature. Not easily explained verbally, but I’m guessing you have some idea of what I mean. Further study, revisiting of familiar texts, etc is all a part of that.

I feel like a lot of the 'no books/study needed' comes from people who want instant gratification. There is an alternate approach to tarot, where - rather than interpreting the cards through fixed meanings and spreads with fixed meanings - the principle meanings come from the cards in relation to each other and fixed meanings are an additional layer applied only after the relational meanings. Camelia Elias has blog posts on this method and Gordon White over at Rune Soup has a whole course on it for premium members. The thing is 1. I am certain 99% of people who want to toss the books are not aware of or do not employ this method of reading and 2. This method still requires some level of study and introspection to come up with relational meanings. If you're reading with TdM, in order to really differentiate 7 of Swords from 8 of Swords you have to have a more sophisticated base interpretation than "There's a bit of conflict and then even more conflict". Both ways of reading tarot require a significant amount of study because you are supposed to absorb these fixed or base meanings and then remix them, coming up with your own keywords and interpretations for the cards as they come up live in readings.

I couldn't even think about what would have happened when I first started out if I would have thought that. I've been studying for years and still have self doubt even with understanding and my intuition.

Love this video, thanks for sharing! By the way I love your book, I take my time through it but can assure you it won't be in the trash this lifetime 😂 IDC The truth is some readers just read to pay bills and it is not important to them if they are accurate, and that's fine...I just wish they would be more transparent and say that- but we have the "well if it doesn't resonate wait a few months" nonsense lol.

Thank you. I am new to tarot but I don't want to stay in kindergarten forever. I have a hunger for learning but was beginning to think perhaps I was going about it in a less effective and efficient way. Thank you, back to the books.

Oh wow. I am learning for fun and I don't plan on reading for anyone but I cannot fathom throwing out the books. That seems utterly disrespectful to the art and frankly disrespectful to myself too. I'm curious and smart enough to put the work into it....that's what makes it fun even if it's just a weekend activity 😊

In the Jazz world, musicians have a saying when referring to free jazz or rule breaking in improvisation. "You need to know the rules backwards and forward before you can skillfully break them." Seems like that rule could be used here to great benefit.

You can connect with the Ashakic Records at 7.83hz (Theta Waves) ask your question then enter into Meditation or sleep, then information will come to you over time. Note practicing increasing the flow or channel then begins to happen more often. Cheers

I couldn't make the premiere but I also posted a video on this. The short: study is still required, but sometimes the books don't work for you, there are methods you can rely on, which, spoiler, still require study.

Thank you Benebell for this. I agree with your thoughts of this, and find it is going along with the overall anti-intellectualism that is taking over the world. That said, I also feel that there is yogis, mediums and spiritually developed people that uses other sources than books.

I only read cards for myself but still want to understand the cards from those more experienced, it doesnt serve myself to project onto the cards and misinterpret and make unsound decisions -there would be no point in consulting the cards. I cant imagine taking the responsibility of someone else's life without having the confidence of proficiency and understanding of symbolism.

I needed some time to process and mull over what you said. I have very little experience with the tarot and am only now beginning to study it. I have begun with your book but have also collected books from Rachel Pollack and plan on collecting and reading books from some of the authors mentioned in your book. I am outside of my comfort zone here but just wanted to share my impressions, experience and questions. In the video, you mentioned something about using the tarot to read/access the Akasha. I know a little bit about that as I have previously studied a system to read the Akashic Records. The emphasis with this system was that to effectively and accurately read from this source, you need a frame of reference. The teacher had a frame of reference and the greater part of that course was to study and completely understand that frame of reference. Only afterward do you go into doing readings and interpreting it based on your intention (guided by the question) and the frame of reference learned. I feel like this is a point you are trying to bring across (you need to study and understand the system of tarot because it gives the frame of reference). I did not and still do not feel comfortable with the frame of reference but this teacher’s readings seemed to be pretty accurate. Even when I tried my own hand at it, it brought forth accurate insights for others. This made me wonder about the nature of the Akashic Records because it appears to have its own set of rules. Can anyone just make up a frame of reference and read them? It appears to be a subjective source and needs rules and structure to bring forth objective information [just my impression]. Also, with dreams (again I know little about this subject). What I have read and applied about dreams seems to say that you need to interpret dreams based on your association with the symbols in your dream. Thus, what does a butterfly mean to me? If a butterfly appears in my dreams I need to substitute the noun (butterfly) with my association of what that symbol is to understand the dream. In essence, it is saying that I need to know my personal frame of reference to interpret what the dream world is saying to me [because it uses my reference system]. This video made me think about the nature of intuition because yes, I receive intuitive impressions or flashes of insight that are usually involuntary. But if you consciously enter the dimensions/worlds beyond, do you need to go in prepared with a frame of reference? What other requirements are there?
