#missile Radome Ring in INVAR36: Now realized through #additivemanufacturing
The commitment (#engineering, #testing, and #manufacturing) of MBDA & Sòphia High Tech, in #partnership, has led to the replacement of the traditional casting process for the Radome Ring with the #SLM process.
Starting from the development of SLM process parameters, including thermal treatment for INVAR36, all required testing and #qualification activities.
Chip removal parameters were also qualified (different from those for INVAR machined by casting), leading to the qualification of new tools for processing the 3D printed part using #CNC #machining.
With this process (ALM + CNC), MBDA benefits in the following areas:
Reduction of Waste
Reduction of Manufacturing Lead Time
Reduction of Costs
Reduction of Environmental Impact
Next step:
Developing an optimized near-net-shape 3D printed raw material to further improve these benefits.
