I just watched the series and I hope that the way the journalist and the attorney are portrayed, at the end of the show, was just a made up thing. I hope they didn't really coddle and support this lying con woman that hurt so many people and was the poster girl for sociopaths and narcisists. That part of the show just gave me a sick stomach. Now that she is out of jail, it remains to be seen if she will make anything decent out of her life.
Same here, didn't like the series because they portrayed her more like a victim, When she was a criminal, a sociopath and a lazy woman who perfer to con instead of working for it.
You're so fast with the reviews, I love it! I've been looking forward to this show for awhile. Since Ozark, I am a HUGE Julia Garner fan, and will watch anything she's in!!! I'm glad this is worth a binge!!!
I did have a problem with the unsettling turn that took place in the last episodes, I don't see Anna as a genius either and I have been following the real-life events that inspired this for some time. Anna reminds me of Roxy Hart and Velma from Chicago as she can't seem to understand the difference between bad fame and good fame. She earned 320,000 from this movie which went to the banks and new clothes and she is waiting to be deported.
A show about a generic strong woman sociopathic con artist played by a chick with the acting skills of William Shatner, portrayed as a victim and has a voice that makes sane people want to headbutt a belt sander. What's the worst that could happen? 🤷♂️
Julia garner acting chops were at their best in one of the last episodes que she had a fight with her lawyer. 👏 I have so many questions. Is she was a fake where did the money to entertain etc for about 2 yrs came from ?
I came looking for commentary about how off the last two episodes felt and you did not disappoint. I have been waiting for this series for months but I was disappointed. I wanted to love it so much. If people looked past their love for Julia Garner, who is an absolute treasure, there is nothing to like about Anna. So I couldn't understand the reporter and her friends' ride or die attitude. Self-interest and gold digging were motivations I understood but actual friendship was never shown. Just a bunch of people using each other and being gullible. Is the reporter naive and gullible or ruthlessly ambitious? It's like in an effort to her and Anna likeable the characterization became a nonsensical inconsistent mess that made me dislike all the characters by the last episodes.
I agree with everything you said.. i was confused near the end.. especially when the reporter says i care about Anna.. where did that care come from? I couldn't understand the base of it. The show started great but the ending was off for me
The same reporter wrote the article the film Hustlers is based on as well so we may have gotten the persona she uses to get these exclusives or she equates everything to fit into what she sees as it being hard out there for a pimptress. **Spoiler Opinion** * * * Anna is shown in contraction to what the reporter has projected on to her so no we aren’t suppose to like her. As for the friends, the article was written pre-trial. They may have still thought a trust fund was somewhere plus she didn’t owe them. Better to be shown as supportive in case she pops off again since she’s been out of prison since last year. (ICE has her now) As for the $600k friend, Lena Dunham’s HBO series of her one sided version is up next and I won’t be watching. Add up all that living it up and they probably broken even. She went for revenge even after the charges were removed, same job and she still riding.. no thanks. Bet she still has all the clothes, the shoes, the contacts and now she has the money. Baby Anna just legal.
Excellent review.Julia Garner is a great actor, and look forward to seeing the performance of the other lady!. Maybe not for binging, a couple of episodes at a time maybe?? And Just started Feria!
She got that $200K loan as the advance as she was wheeling and dealing between the finance companies who were trying to get her business. But also, at one point, she opened up a bank account and deposited fake checks at one branch, then traveled through the city to another branch on the same day and made the withdrawal before the check could bounce.
@@MoviesAndMunchies oh yeah and I forgot about that one bank account that authorized her to overdraft $100k in order to provide the funds for Fortress to travel oversees to confirm her trust account. They used $45k but she stopped them from moving forward and kept the rest. I had to watch each episode twice to keep up with all the details. Definitely an interesting story.
I've been waiting for this story to be told. When this broke in the newspaper I was addicted how this woman was able to use her wits to defraud the wealthy inner circle of New York somebody's. Great review.
I agree this show was fantastic.. it had me at the first episode and could wait for each one.. my only two issues were- Anna accent took me out a few times, mostly at the beginning- she sounded Like James Franco in the disaster artist. That and the reporter and lawyers relationship especially towards the last episode where it almost hinted at a romantic relationship between the two. It felt very out of place. Luckily it didn’t go anywhere
Thanks Chris for this review. I’ll give it a shot next week, after the Super Bowl. I like Garner (Ozark) & Chlumsky (Veep) & look forward to enjoying this series. I just finished the 8 episodes of Reacher & absolutely thought that series was top-shelf. Sorry, but for once I didn’t agree with your review (1 1/2 couches) while I easily give it 4 1/2 couches. I think I enjoy crime, action-thrillers more than you.
I'm glad you enjoyed Reacher!! I love crime and action thrillers, but that one obviously didn't connect with me. Let me know what you thought of Inventing Anna when you get a chance to see it.
Frankly, I was hooked on “Mafia Dolls” from Colombia. I binged on the 158 episodes because I could not look away. I kind of lived for it for a couple of weeks. I don’t speak Spanish but love to hear it.
Man, i am so introvert. This kind of show is my nemesis. I watch can you catch me, and the whole runtime, i have nightmare "what if he blow his cover? " 😂 I cant even enjoy the movie
I got a binge hangover! Worthwhile, but I agree that the last 2 episodes were a bit slow: altogether brilliant production values & CASTING - WOW! So, not just a conversation piece, but a lot to really think about... My conclusion? A folk heroine, with uncannily acute sense & taste...& the ability to ‘tough it out’ (as she probably continues to do) 💔
That's not even been on my radar. I'll add it to my list. I'm not sure though if I'll be able to get to a review of it anytime soon based on what I've already got in the queue. Thanks for letting me know about it!
The Tinder Swindler, Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer, 137 Shots, Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan. (more are here in my playlist: ru-vid.com/group/PLVKDU6uks7dgDaxvqVUSibkogh5jmmh8W)
Watching it now. I dont think garner is such a good actress. She is playing the same character she plays in ozark with difft hair and costumes. This show is like watching scandal with the aggravating girl from ozark.
Pretty awful series, just no one was likable and even actively disliked the reporter. The story could of been done better, liberties or no liberties, this was just pretty meh imo. I do however like this actress in 'Ozark', and that series 'Dirty John' for that matter, though definitely 'Ozark' above all else!
You missed the couch or 3 on this pathetic debacle offered by shonda rhimes (just some chick from Grey's Anatomy, a show I never watched) and the word here is her AGENDA which ruined every scene for me. Look again at how often she peoples the scenery with Black Americans ( both main and background actors) even posters and decor..the acting throughout was VERY uneven ..and i am really talking about the role of Vivian (BUT also the prosecuting attny).. ..Straight up Amateur hour ..made for Hallmark Channel ..from the 90's. level of talent.. ..Vivian's hairstyle and clothing were a distraction ..the whole production was just sad..her home with hubby and baby on the way ..WAS IN NY? or w t heck? not a nyc apartment or any residence in NYC..the furniture was "what ever i could get " Someone caved in letting S.R. helm this piece..this was way out of her league ..and sadly as much as i love Garner The accent was all over the world and yes with a with southern and hint of Brit in there for a mo...This could have been great to watch Cuz i adore a great con....BUT NOT IN S.R.'s amateur hands..
