Inverse Thinking or Inversion is a powerful mental model popularized by Charlie Munger a billionaire investor and partner of Warren Buffett. It teaches you how to think in a way that avoids the negative aspects of the situation and allows you to align with the positive. It is a versatile principle that can benefit almost anyone when they apply it. Watch the video to learn the necessary details.

When I inverted the “Do unto others…” rule I arrived at “do not expect others to do for you those things you would not do for them”. It’s a good way to avoid narcissistic exploitation of others and entitlement. If you’re not prepared to help someone else out in the same way if they come to you, don’t go expecting others to do it for you either.

Don't you think inverting could also make us more pessimist and paralyzed from taking action because we think only about problem instead of opportunity or goal.
@ProgressLeavesClues
@ProgressLeavesClues Год назад
I think inverting definitely has potential for misuse. I tend to try and use it in a manner like solving from “both ends” of an issue. Ultimately it is an extra strategic step which could potentially cause analysis paralysis, but if the issue is important it’s usually worth some extra thought.

@@ProgressLeavesClues agree, do you have a book recommendations related to mental models? Reviewing bunch of books major drawback is depth & examples. I would love to see some general mental models, for business and for psychology particularly.
@ProgressLeavesClues
@ProgressLeavesClues Год назад
There are certainly a lot of new mental models books out there and many lack depth. This can sometimes be a good thing in that you find an interesting model and then go off and research it in particular. For broader info I like Super Thinking by Weinberg/McCann, the Bible of Mental Models by Parker, Shane Parrish has a good series on mental models that has a bit more depth. For business, aside from a good economics textbook or maybe Basic Economics by Sowell, I like The Business Model Navigator by Gassmann/Choudury , 101 College textbooks are also great in many instances for introducing models.

@@ProgressLeavesClues Thanks for sharing knowledge, the one common criticism I found about "Super Thinking book" is that a simple website resource or notion template or video like yours would be simply better then this giant book (bcz easily searchable, skippable, explorable nature)

I love this and wish I had learned of it long ago. I used to work in software development and we would hold what we called “pre-mortem” meetings, where we’d ask what could happen that would make a project fail. It was a kind of inverse thinking, though we didn’t call it that. Also, the inverse version of the golden rule is how Confucius worded this wisdom.

There's really no downside to death, but only to those financially and mentally dependent upon us. Since they have no choice to them it's simply a practice in resiliency. Instead of "Do unto others." I find a stronger Maxim to be "Do unto others as you would have them do unto your most beloved."

1:27 Isn't "What can I avoid doing that will compromise my chances of getting X?"
@ProgressLeavesClues
@ProgressLeavesClues 3 года назад
Thats kind of the right idea, essentially though you first look at the opposite worst case scenario and then work backwards to the beneficial behavior that will avoid the problem identified by the inverse thinking exercise.

We can also say :- What if there are no issues? What If I don't want to manifest these desires right now? What if there are no debts thinking as per Neville Goddard, what ate your views on above questions Thank you great work and video.
@ProgressLeavesClues
@ProgressLeavesClues 3 года назад
I believe the mind is a question answering machine and that those questions may be quite useful to seek answers for. In terms of Neville, I think he would probably suggest living from the place where they are already real, such as going beyond the question of "What if there are no debts" to "How do I feel NOW that I AM debt free?" In terms of Inverse Thinking, it just lets us know what would be counterproductive to that goal so we can avoid certain destructive ways of thinking. For example, if we make our question answering machine (brain) keep seeking answers to the question, "Why do I always have debts?" the question answering machine would keep finding and producing answers to that question that would not be in our best interests. We can then be alert if we catch ourselves thinking the inverse of what we know is a more productive line of thinking. At least this is my current understanding.

4:54 Do to others as you would have others do to you. Wouldn't the inverse of this sentence be... Don't do to others what you would not have them do to you. ?
@ProgressLeavesClues
@ProgressLeavesClues 3 года назад
It gets pretty tricky when we start inverting for a creative vantage point such as reversing others to self. I wouldn’t recommend this aspect of the method except for a shift of one’s viewpoint for creative purposes. As such I don’t think there are any specific rules on how much or what gets inverted when you just want a viewpoint shift. For practical use of Inverse Thinking it is probably best to stick with the main use of working backwards from failure to the present moment where one can then choose to act differently with the information gained from the inversion, at least that is how I use it most frequently and Munger seems to use it that way as well.

@@ProgressLeavesClues That makes sense. I should have looked at it from a higher perspective. My bad. I was so focused on getting the most out of your video that a small misalignment with my thought process caught me off guard.

It may sound like it would be a good way to avoid all problems by not doing anything, not believing anything, not learning anything, not thinking about anything... does that work? No, not really. There will still be a problem of wasting all your life on nothingness. 🤔
