Hi Toby. Relatively new to your channel. Why have you invested only on Growth funds in your isa? When it comes to retirement, from what I understand, you won't be able to cash out your dividends as they are automatically reinvested. I'm 50 now, so I've opted to invest in the Income version, but reinvesting dividends for now until I retire.
@TobyNewbatt
@TobyNewbatt 3 месяца назад
Hi Ruby, great question - and I have talked about dividends quite a lot on my channel :). They are totally not a necessary thing for retirement, if I need money from my investments I will be selling what I need. In short, this is a bit of a trap that is repeated to investors that you somehow need dividends to get income. What ends up happening is people focus on only buying companies that pay a dividend. This is like buying a car because it has red paint. See my videos on my channel about dividends :)
@AlexisMoore-nx6wf
@AlexisMoore-nx6wf 3 месяца назад
I'm just sharing what I've read and watched about retirement, but the common wisdom is to draw down on your investments rather than live off dividends. Once you retire, hopefully, you still have decades for your investments to grow. As you get close to retirement, consider moving investments into bonds or having savings to weather a crash, perhaps two years' worth of living expenses.

Great update 😊 I was wondering what your thoughts are on countries potentially dropping the petrodollar system in favour of something like project mbridge which isn’t dependent on the US dollar for trade. If countries do switch to a new system the dollar would devalue overtime, inflation would rise and the stock market would suffer as a result. Also would you look to reduce your VUAG holdings and diversify further into emerging markets if this is the case?

I wanted to open an investengine stocks & shares isa, plenty of choice of etfs plus no platform fee or dealing charges. Also i liked the ability to be able to invest small amounts in a monthly saving, pound cost averaging set up simple, and still have 3 or 4 etfs without needing to invest larger amounts. But when I tryed to set up an account i soon realised I couldn't just pay a lump sum in with my debit card and easily set up regular savings portfolio. I needed Internet banking and some open banking thingy. So i cancelled the account

Hi Toby, For each of your five vanguard ETF’s was the cost £500 each = £2500? If the answer is yes, then what is your rationale when a Vanguard all world ETF would be cheaper at £500? Is the performance of the S&P 500 a factor in your ETF selection? I’m late to the game on investing so please excuse my ignorance.
@TobyNewbatt
@TobyNewbatt 3 месяца назад
No worries at all! So fees are weighted not totalled I hope that makes sense. In your example let’s say you did invest £500 into each of these 5 ETFs (that’s not what I have done but let’s play along for the example) The fees are based on the percentage of those £500 investments NOT totalled. So my current average cost is 0.09% compared to a Vanguard global fund of 0.22% I hope that makes sense. Maybe in my next update I’ll explain it a bit better 😎

@TobyNewbatt
@TobyNewbatt 3 месяца назад
Congratulations first off thats amazing. On the second part - the amount of accounts and how its split is not relevant. Assuming you are talking about compounding your wealth from here on out. The math doesn't change, it just gets easier the more you have presuming you can stick with this for the very long term. £100k or $100k is just an arbitrary number, but it's a really nice mental barrier and money compounds faster the more you have. Now comes the hard part...waiting! :)
@boyasaka
@boyasaka 3 месяца назад
I think that statement is a bit misleading The first 100 is most important And there is virtually nothing in it if you had say 95k So you could say the first 95 or first 110k Or first 90k 100k is just a figure plunked out of the sky The more you have the more you get from compounded interest My work pension last Sunday was 127100 Today it’s 128500 A gain of 1400 pound in a week

Great video Toby Is the reason for having seperate funds vs just S&P 500 then say an all world ex America so that you can tweak the various funds based on the markets more specifically as you wish? Ive been looking at my current investment. Target percentages below Invesco all world etf - very low cost (0.15%) 80% S&P 500 esg - performance virtually mirrors the standard however screens out alot of the worse offenders. Tech focused 10%r Vanguard all world esg Also covers smaller companies 5% Royal London - mostly UK and quite bond heavy 5% RL fund only available via HL platform not trading 212 Looking at AJ bell vs HL platform as etf fees are less than half. Also invest engine for retained profit Interesting you keep the Pension super simple

Thanks Jay - yes in answer to your question my portfolio looks like this partly because I enjoy playing around with the different ETFs to see how cheap I could make my overall costs! This is great content. Thanks for sharing.Can I ask what the difference is between Vanguard S&P 500 and Vanguard's U.S. Equity Index Fund - Accumulation? Is one better than the other, or are they essentially the same thing? Which are you likely to get better returns from?
@TobyNewbatt
@TobyNewbatt 3 месяца назад
Great question. The main difference is this: The S&P 500 is just 500 companies HQ'd in the US The US Equity Index is MOST of the companies listed in the US (includes small, medium, large etc.) You can see it contains 3,500 stocks or so. On another note the US equity fund is a mutual fund and NOT an ETF - this is just a technicality but it means that it is not available on most platforms to buy. What will perform better - your guess is as good as mine :) - nobody knows. Pros and Cons can be made for either - better to have more companies to be more diversified etc. less concentration?

@@TobyNewbatt You're a braver man than I, Toby! Betting on the eventual appreciation of the yen has made many FX widows over the years. XD There's also the issue of the unhedged version tracking the performance of a Japanese index in USD terms. Have a look in the KIID. This may not necessarily reflect your core philosophy of taking the returns as they are in native currency and only worrying about the relative performance to GBP over the long term. In fact, this is a common sleight of hand in most large index funds, but since 60% of stock market performance comes from the US globally and somewhere around 80% from developed markets close enough to the US in terms of performance and central banking policy, punters rarely notice the implied currency risks they carry; assuming they hold the world or the equivalent weights in separate ETFs.

The £ value is the cash return, which is a very simple calculation. The % return is the time weighed to accurately account for multiple contributions and withdrawals (your relative return is higher for the sums invested at lower prices and lower at higher prices). The latter is more accurate for accounts where you have regular contributions, withdrawals or a bit of both. The former is ok for one lump sum you just hold.

Yeah, takes a while. I think it's just the back office that is a bit slow. IE is very much about fintech and less about a busy back office. Some providers who hold cash deposits or in general have big buffers, may occasionally gross up almost immediately and claim the HMRC funds on arrival against this, but this is rare. So it does boil down to how good the admin is in dealing with HMRC and any other intermediaries. Then the transfers themselves are normally snail pace (3 working days average between parties). But they do land roughly within the advised window with IE. As it grows, hopefully this part of their pension operation will sharpen up.

Hey Toby. I am a standard rate tax payer (usually) and I max out my ISA every year. I want to know the best place to accumulate and park cash (including any costs) - I use this as an emergency fund and also to build up savings without risk as well as a 'safe' place if I decide to convert some of my GIA into 'cash' for safety (same principle as holding bonds in a pension). So up to now I have been just using a standard easy-access savings account (whichever one pays the highest interest) but then I realised I am getting taxed at 20%, whereas if I bought CSH2 ETF, I would get taxed at 10% (and only on crystallisation when sold - not all of it every year). So is this the best way to park cash safely with some growth or is there a better way or better ETF without market risk but still quick access? Trading212 pay 5.2% is this better or is it subject to income tax outside an ISA? Is it better to put any spare Trading212 GIA cash into CSH2? Can you map out the pros and cons please? Thanks.
@TobyNewbatt
@TobyNewbatt 3 месяца назад
Firstly great Q here Steve. Good reminder here that any profit made with CSH2 (or any investment) would be a capital gain (only when sold) and not savings income. The only downside would be that any investment like this or the 5.2% in Trading 212 (outside of the ISA) is technically not protected by any FSCS scheme. To some people this would put them off but to me this is not a concern. For a money market fund to fail like this...we'd have much bigger issues to worry about but it is worth being aware that it's not a savings product but more of an investing product. Outside of that I guess the only other option is premium bonds? Fully protected but then it's a lottery so nothing is guaranteed. I like your way of thinking here and that tax saving is a nice little hack if you want to put up with the 'risk'.
@steve6375
@steve6375 3 месяца назад
@@TobyNewbatt Thanks for reply, of course a higher rate tax payer will be taxed at 40% income tax rather than 20% CGT (assuming the interest payments are above Personal Savings allowance of £500). Toby, another Q. I just actually read the gov website on CGT and it mentions that costs can be deducted from gains. It never occurred to me before. So does that mean we can deduct platform and also any additional trading costs off the total gains figure? What if we have two platforms each with costs, but we actually only sell on one of them in a tax year, can we deduct the cost of both platforms from the gain of one of them? Also what if SIPP platform has a cost, can we deduct this from cap gains too😊
@AlexisMoore-nx6wf
@AlexisMoore-nx6wf 3 месяца назад
Seems like the answer is no. I entered your question into Gemini and it came out with this: “No, you cannot deduct platform fees from capital gains tax calculations in the UK. HMRC has a specific list of allowable costs that can be deducted, and platform fees are not included on that list. The allowable costs are limited to incidental costs of acquisition and disposal, such as broker fees for buying or selling the asset. Ongoing fees, such as platform charges, are not considered allowable costs.” My only question to you is why are you having to pay CGT? Have you made full use of your ISA and pension allowance? Depending how much you earn, the maximum contribution allowance is £80k a year (between pension and isa).

@@AlexisMoore-nx6wf Thanks for looking into this and your reply and the bad news (not so much)! I don't trust AI for answers as it has got it wrong on many occasions, but I think in this case it is correct, sadly. I am retired and so can only contribute 2.8K into SIPP at best. I max out ISA every year as I xfer some GIA into ISA each year. I was made redundant at 57 and had no chance to start adding heavily into a SIPP before I received a work pension at 60. I guess there is a warning there for others, i.e. don't rely on massively contributing to a SIPP in last 5 years in case you are made redundant (or have unforeseen health issues)?

Hi Toby. Do you not invest in SCV funds like Avantis or DFA if you believe in the scv premium?? also why did you choose only s&p500 as the US market when there's tons of companies out there??
@beancount811
@beancount811 3 месяца назад
The nearest you can get on IE is ISP6 or some such tracker with around 40% in SCV. They tend to be the more expensive ETFs to hold, volatile, and you need to hold them for a very long time to get any premium. USSC isn't available; nor are the ETFs from Avantis or DFA on this platform. It's difficult to find something that is reasonably priced and matches the spec from the research exactly. S&P500 by contrast is dirt cheap to hold, dominates the US index and has a good enough track record.

Last year I put £6k from my small side hustle into a business IE account, the usual suspects, FTSE, Naz, SP etc I had to withdraw it as I approached the end of the financial year otherwise HMRC would assume I’d paid myself a salary and I’ve be hit for income tax This was my understanding, I’m not 100% sure if I was correct Incidentally I made £600 but I’m not sure if I need to pay tax on it, corporation tax possibly?
@boyasaka
@boyasaka 3 месяца назад
Your Personal Savings Allowance is separate from any ISA allowance you may have. The amount of allowance depends on the type of taxpayer you are: basic rate taxpayers (20%) can earn £1,000 in tax-free interest each year. higher rate taxpayers (40%) can earn £500 in tax-free interest each

Probably best to talk to an accountant, if you’re worried. I’ve used online only accountants for about £170. It’s a lot when you compare it to the £600 you made but at least you know you’ll be tax compliant and you’ll have that knowledge in future.

Thanks Toby. You always say S&P500 but never Nasdaq? Is Nasdaq too volatile or is there another reason? Cheers.

I wouldn’t really call that an index fund in a true sense…it’s based on a stock being listed on the Nasdaq exchange and leaning towards tech. It’s done great historically but who knows whether it will do the same over the next 20 years. Indeed probably will be very volatile too!
