This video is how to sound like Elliott Smith! I go through the tone, instruments, lyrics, and the style of Elliott Smith. Then to demonstrate understanding I make an original song that is simmilar to his style.

i'd kill to be half the writer he was. especially his lyrics, they just seem to pour out of him like nothing at all

Do your own thing everyone’s got something they can give creatively it’s just time and work. If you pop it your heart into your art as he said if you like it somebody else will probably like it.

Great video. One thing about the "chorus effect" on at least his first album and perhaps more. Elliott actually sang the track twice, but did it so consistently that it essentially gave a "chorus" effect. With close listening you can hear the tiny vocal differences of two independent tracks.

Played and sang twice, vocal double tracking is easy to do but doubling the entire performance live with the acoustic as well is mind boggling hard to do.

He’s the reason why I’m a musician, I love music more than anything, it’s obvious, that’s why I’m gonna spend my entire life making it, Elliott Smith is my one and only favorite artist of all time he is my inspiration he is my guiding light is the best and I don’t think there’s a better artist than him. He’s the best.

Elliott plays dreadnoughts not small bodied guitars. Usually his Yamaha Fg180 Red Label for live or later on a 60s Gibson J45 especially in the studio on XO and Figure 8.

This is a great video, but a little music theory might have helped.

@@Axel_Ironvalley Its been a while since I watched this, but I feel like a bit of examination into the chord progressions he uses and the way he puts substitutions in and modal interchange while switching between parts of his songs might have added some good insight. As well as the unique voicings that elliott seems to use a lot in his guitar playing, and the common intervals he focuses on in regards to his melodies over his choices.

He was way more like the beatles than Nick Drake. His actual songs don't sound anything like Nick Drake beyond the surface level. Nick made folk songs, elliott made pop songs.
