Julie Beischel, PhD, is the co-founder and Director of Research at the Windbridge Research Center, a nonprofit dedicated to performing rigorous scientific research and creating educational materials on the topics of dying, death, and what comes next. She received her doctorate in Pharmacology and Toxicology with a minor in Microbiology and Immunology. She is author of Investigating Mediums. Her website is www.windbridge.org/.
Here she describes her research approach, working with mediums whom she treats as partners in her investigations. She discusses her quintuple-blind protocols that have provided clear evidence that mediums are able to provide information regarding deceased persons about whom they had no previous knowledge. She also refers to many interpersonal factors involved in studying mediums. Additionally she discusses physiological factors.
New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He is past-vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that association for his contributions to the study of consciousness.

It took Julie's book, Among Mediums, plus one of her more recent papers to open me up for the topic of mediumship as a valid topic of parapsychology. I think there aren't many who are so rigorous in applying the scientific method like her (5-fold blinding!), while at the same time being enormously courageous (mediumship research for more than a decade!) and having so very little monetary resources for her research (she writes about this in her book). I'm happy to finally see her being interviewed by Jeff, she was on my wish list for a long time. Btw, she has also an invited chapter in Leslie Kean's book "Surviving Death", where her topic is nicely presented in a way larger context. ... Ah, and Leslie Kean is, of course, also on my wish list, Dear Jeff! :-)

You mentioned mediums knowing a disincarnate loved one is near, by a sense of prescience. We do not talk much about claire sentience or the ability to feel someone's essence. It is like a smell or a flavor but there is no known sense this aligns to. I am claire sentient. My experience is that every person has an field around them that seems to carry the essence of they are. My best example was a minister I met who felt to me like a used car-saleman. I always put these experiences on an inner shelf termed "interesting but unvalidated." Much later, he proved to be unethical, substantiating the feelings I initially had. I understand what the mediums are sensing. It is not telepathy, the reading of minds but is more similar to the reading of hearts. I have had visits from several friends who have died. I feel their unique prescience near me. One message taken from these experiences: be careful of what you lean into ( despair, envy, deceit vs kindness, compassion, forgiveness). It becomes part of who you take with you.

Do you know anything about healing and how to know whose legit? Why sage for example, does it really have to be sage or is it more the thoughts/ energy/ association put on the sage? If you feel better than you did.. Is that enough? I can't help but feel a bit weirded out when ppl start talking about seeing auras and angels. I'm not religious but am not against the idea of Jesus.. maybe even angels too but then there's spirits ghosts demons... There's a lot of this stuff that may as well be unicorns and mermaids at times.. maybe it's my bias. I am intuitive and do believe others have a legitimate gift however because of frauds, religion and stories etc it's hard to know what to take srsly.

Great interview, Dr. M 😎. Time just sped by and that's when you KNOW it's good. It felt like we were just scratching the surface and I wanted to learn more. You provided some great, fresh ideas and questions for the researcher to chew on in the future too. This was fascinating to me as I didn't really know what a medium is and what they do. Never heard of a spirit guide either, so it was a great education too into an area of parapsychology that I have precious little info on. It's great to learn here where I just can't find good, scientific-minded info elsewhere. Absolutely fascinating - Thank you 🦋

Have you looked into capacitive & phononic resonance changes when people form a circle & touch each other, I predict an increase in parasympathetic activity & Theta waves. In order to see ghosts I suggest using night goggles, & the photonic pumping of Dark/Black Light combined, based on the possibility that some of those invisible photons will change into visible ones through interacting with the "entity". The trauma in childhood causes a dissociative defense mechanism. With good hypnotic subjects it's found that their parents argued more than average, & the child learned to use imagination to create a stabilising alternate reality. You might find "Chacterological Transformation" by Stephen M. Johnson interesting.

In my experience... spirits linked to deceased people that did not "pass" on and are contacted while they are "stuck" here remain "choice makers" and are capable of "moving on" to "where they need to go (or choose not to)." However, contact with spirits linked to people who have successfully passed and then contacted seem more like perfect representations of the person being sought that are then "played" by a "Larger Consciousness System" to give whatever message is required. The main difference seems to be the dead that did not pass are still learning and making choices in their disembodied state, whereas the dead "from beyond" are just "data files" that will perfectly reproduce the person you want, but they do not make new choices.
@benbishop1131

I always thought of mediums and channelers as the same kind of thing. I'm not sure if there is much of a difference between talking to the dead and talking to or talking for entities. Many of these entities will say they are 'dead' in our terms. Seems like it would be hard to draw a line anywhere.

No one really has any idea who is speaking to or through them. There are a lot of lower astral tricksters who are happy to take on any persona expected. I urge people to buy THE SIREN CALL OF HUNGRY GHOSTS by Joe Fischer where he describes his addiction to mediumship and what happened when he tried to verify the statements made to him. They claimed to have been close friends and lovers in a past life. When he traveled overseas to verify their statements, he found out they were lying. He confronted the entities and they turned nasty and eventually stopped speaking to him. If you want entities to gas light you, go for it. But you honestly can never be truly sure who/what you are speaking to.

I was always taught that there is a difference between psychic (remote viewing for example) & mediumship is that they are both separate things. Psychic comes from the individual where mediumship obviously comes from spirit. But both are totally separate. Everyone is psychic but not everyone has mediumistic abilities. If that makes sense???

Lovely information! Question: because mediums usually cannot call up whom they wish to speak with, could some of the inaccurate phenomena be from there being not a natural connection in some cases (because your mediums are supposed to connect with one name)? That is, could another spirit be supposedly wishing to connect? I think that would be interesting to test for.

In her book "Among Mediums" she tells the story how she got into the field. This includes a case (or two?) where she went to a medium to ask her about a personal case, where she tried hard not to produce any hints to the medium but still got some good results. So I assume that she is - cautiously - positive about the reality of mediums.

@ArizonaWillful
@ArizonaWillful 3 года назад
Louise Hay's symptoms and causes was hilarious. For example, if you have stomach problems, you have trouble digesting current events in your life. If you are constipated, you are refusing to let go of memories that are now toxic to you. If you have a sore throat, you don't speak out when you should. If you are impotent, then you are afraid to thrust yourself into the world. You get the drift. (Eye Roll)

Perhaps i misunderstand, but this discussion seems to presuppose that any such mediumship transmissions, even if "verified" in some factual details, are from a dimension occupied by a deceased, an afterlife somewhere, somehow superimposed on our own living dimension. Why wouldn't it be similarly plausible that the transmission comes from ourselves, that the dimension is mental, borne from our own knowledge and creativity? If we want to expand our understanding of "mind" into the non-local, wouldn't it be just as reasonable, perhaps more so, to consider the possibility that we ourselves possess profound powers of projection, often manifest in forms far more coherent than we thought ourselves capable of? Examples abound. Coherence is, after all, largely supplied by the witness, and much simulacra must inhabit any level of reading. How do we ascertain true neutrality, if there is such a thing, and directional plasticity to the message? The paradigm of mind as consequential substrate - required to support the notion of non-local "data" - also logically suggests the possibility of pure mind as the lens, filter, and projector of all coherent mental experience in the present. We must let the ancestors speak, of course, and the better we listen, the better we find them in ourselves.
@krshrv
@krshrv 5 лет назад
there is nothing in this discussion supporting the idea that these are authentic transmissions, from others, from another place, but that seems to be the assumption. it could be all in our heads, created by our own knowledge, memories, or sensitivities. the information might be valid, but the assumptions about the source are not supported.

I'd like to know: how can people become "filthy rich" (a term I found elsewhere in this comment section) as a medium? Sure, there are certainly a few superstars or highly efficient criminals who are able to make a lot of money, just as in every other business. I am more interested here in the "usual medium", and I am assuming that the "usual sitter" is an ordinary mid-class person who has recently lost a loved one. I don't see how to get a lot of money from such a person, a few hundred bucks at most. And I also wouldn't think that many of these people will return, once they have received their message. And under these conditions, our usual medium would need about one new customer per work day only to get an income sufficient to pay the rent and bills - a far cry from getting rich! And given that there are so many "usual mediums" around, there should be a lot of competition, and as a result I would think that the majority of usual mediums simply cannot live from the income of mediumship alone, and will thus do it rather as a side job or spare time activity. Right or wrong?

The famous "psychic" Sylvia Brown charged $600 for a 1 hour private session. That money adds up since she did this 8 hours a day. Obviously, no REAL psychic could perform like this 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. It was fraud but it made her rich.

from Dostoevsky `Brothers karamazov`, a dialogue btw Ivan and some demon, RIGHT ON THE SUBJECT, must read: "Look at the spiritualists, for instance.... I am very fond of them... only fancy, they imagine that they are serving the cause of religion, because the devils show them their horns from the other world. That, they say, is a material proof, so to speak, of the existence of another world. The other world and material proofs, what next! And if you come to that, does proving there’s a devil prove that there’s a God? I want to join an idealist society, I’ll lead the opposition in it, I’ll say I am a realist, but not a materialist, ha-ha!’"

well, think about where our thoughts are coming from? ;) The World is defined in the semantics : we know things because we attribute meanings to the manifestations; we change meanings- things also change. So "exactly proving" means what we `assign it to mean It works on consensus too

It is always suspicious to me that when these stage mediums ask if there is someone in the audience who has lost a relative with a certain name to put up their hand. And it is always the first name and this is obviously cold reading. Why cant the spirit tell them their surname? If they can say Bob or Jane then they can say the surname just as easily.
@b0ondockz838
@b0ondockz838 2 года назад
Sometimes they do bring through surnames, but you have to understand how communication is received. The mediums faculties are used to communicate. This means the mediums memories are used, as are names, images, symbols, etc. that the medium is familiar with or has to interpret. When something is heard, it’s heard clairaudiently within the mind. It’s not what most people think. It’s subtle, and in my opinion very few know how to do it really well. The best ones are not on TV, and unfortunately there are a ton of frauds.

I'd latched onto the fact that something wasn't right with Julie, but couldn't put my finger on it. The only obvious discordance, was the fact that despite a very young-looking skin (30y?), she had gray hair cut short like a man's haircut. She was either old with very young skin, or young with very old hair. I eventually reached the tentative conclusion that she'd deliberately made her hair look older, but I couldn't figure out why. At 27:50, Jeffrey said, "So, you're getting away from this sort of colonial model of the-" Julie interrupted him, blurting out "Do you mean patriarchal? Yes!" Then, she sat back looking quite pleased with herself. To his credit, Jeffrey's smile never broke. He completely ignored the attack upon his gender, by finishing what he'd been trying to say, "The lofty researcher, and the lowly research subjects." And with that interchange, I'd found the key to what was bothering me about her. She's a feminist, who seeks out opportunities to verbally attack males. If no reasonable opportunity to the currently present male(s) shows up, her impatience for conflict & confrontation will eventually take over, spurring her to operate on the assumption that it happened anyway - as it did, in this instance. Of course, this has to be qualified, because she has a husband. Therefore, it's not all the time. The topic at the time of the attack was professional format, as in style. So, it's reasonable to assume that her o/c confrontations &/or voicing of resentments against males is (more or less) limited to her career. Perhaps she feels that males have interfered with her achieving greater advances of academic position, or a larger income in her career? It's hard to say if that's true, but it seems to be a common gripe with feminists (the female 67 cents on the male dollar argument), and so it's possible that's the case here, too.
