INVESTIGATIVE: Vegas homeowners sue 'Property Brothers' show for faulty remodel 

Doesn’t matter if it’s a show or not. They need to have the work done properly whether they paid $200 or $200k.

Never hire a television crew as contractors.

I’m a professional contractor. Those issues are much more than punch list items.They are a sign of incompetent if not bordering criminal.

As a general contractor, these complaints make my blood boil. Nobody should pay 100% up front, we ask for 50% max with progress payments along the way. We always make sure that things are up to code and that any punch list items or major changes are taken care of to the customer's liking before accepting final payment AND we offer a warranty on any installed materials. Our name was built on quality and trust, not just making things look "pretty"...

The construction company should lose their license and be placed on probation untill all the defects and shoddy work had been completed and checked by a property/home inspector. What a nightmare!!

It sounds like HGTV and the Scott Brothers need to hire real construction people to fix the problems or give the money back.

This is horrible. The property brothers and the production group should be held accountable. Now that they are trying to dismiss, says that they don’t want to make things right after screwing over their customers for almost $200K. The world today smh 🤦‍♂️

The brothers saw that house before the couple came back home, if they okayed the work, they are part of the problem.

I would never put my home and my savings in the hand of celebrities.

I could never leave my money and my house at the mercy of celebrities. One: TV shows only feature the good sides, two: celebrities only care about a constant flow of money into their wallets. Three: If a celebrity wants a lawyer just so he would respond, already shows that they are trying to cover something up, without losing their money.

Anyone who goes on a show expecting to NOT be screwed is insane. I can not count the number of times I have heard about these things going wrong.

I'm a local handyman in Los Angeles and a similar show for buzz feed try to hire me to do jobs for them for remodeling house and right away I realize they wanted to do things ASAP with cheap materials. I suggested and point it out certain things so that it will be done right and they said No we want quick and cheap doesn't have to be perfect. I didn't take the job.

The Scott brothers should have graciously stepped forward and made sure this situation was made right! It’s their show....their REPUTATION on the line. It speaks volumes about them!!!

This is what happens when a show has to cram a full home remodel into weeks when it should take months.

For the fact that this is on national television this should be done like with prestige, ultimate and superb quality, I hope this couple wins!!!

I remember this episode and how excited they were. This is heartbreaking but I've heard this about other shows also. I would never be on a TV show that was a remodeled because I've heard so many bad stories

If you give almost a quarter of a mil for a remodel you would expect it to be perfect, and everything with the exception of damage to the stove were simple fixes which the contractors were to lazy to correct and instead mess it up even more, I hope this couple win their suit!!

The fact that the "brothers" chose to respond through their lawyer speaks volumes.

All these home shows are a scam. The only ones I would actually trust 100% is This Old House with Norm Abrams and crew they know what they're doing

I remember this episode. Every time I watch the costs always go up, something very expensive and unknown comes up. I get very nervous watching shows like this sometimes.

As someone who built homes for a living, it’s appalling Mistakes happen. These are NOT those. It is sloppy, half assed work I can’t imagine the frustrations they must be experiencing, especially in the beginning of their marriage when trying to get used to new life etc-hard to be happy living in a money pit.

The brothers apparently routinely get away with this sort of "showmanship".

People don't realize that they have to pay to be on the show....I was called to be on the show as owner of America wholesale flooring.I asked how much are you going to pay me they said we won't pay you but you can give us 5000 in free flooring and your workers can wear there company shirts and have a credit at the end of show....I believe they scam people because of there notoriety.

I watched Property Brothers with my contractor relatives and they were screaming the whole time about how they weren’t fixing the house properly so this doesn’t shock me

I feel for these home owners! Scott’s need to get in there and clean the mess up asap!!! Who cares if they are on tv, just fix it now!!!

At first you think. Man they are whining about really little stuff. Then you think hey. If I spent 195k for a REMODEL not even a new build but a REMODEL. Everything should be 100% perfect

My cousin and his wife's home was featured on another HGTV show as a remodel. Everything this couple is saying happened to my cousin as well. My cousin said that the show heavily edited many of the scenes, and even went so far as putting up fake items (e.g., range in the kitchen) to appear as complete for the show. At the end of production, several items were left undone; however, none the wiser to the viewer. One of the fake items fell and damaged the wall too. I would never let anyone from HGTV near my house, especially given that there don't seem to be any real perks. All these years I assumed that perks were included.

Only issues with building code is addressed by the building departments, the other are civil issues. Never pay off a contractor until a walk through is done and the corrections are completed.

I’m a contractor and I can definitely call that crap work. If I did work like that I’d never get paid.

I like how the Brother's lawyer claimed the couple's goal was to just create a negativity campaign for the show when literally so many things in the house were broken or cosmetically faulty. They took it so personally against their show and the Brother's reputation, as if this couple literally didn't pay every single penny for what they designed and built lol. If you don't want negativity or a bad rep, maybe 1) don't make the family pay for literally EVERYTHING so you can at least get away with some half-assed discounted work OR 2) literally just don't do a sloppy shit job? And some of the stuff seems nit picky but it really isn't. When you pay for something brand new what's the point when it's already functioning or looking like it's been used for YEARS, like the French doors that couldn't even close and let water leak through them? It's just embarrassing honestly and I've had similar situations with remodeling with a contractor and when the contractor does something wrong they either 1) get upset that they have to re-do their work and sometimes try to charge you additional fees OR 2) tear up the work they just did as rough and sloppy as possible and do an even "shittier" job doing it the "right way" the second time. Everyone brags about trade jobs and how much you can make with them but these are literally the experiences people get from those same "trade job experts" making their acclaimed 70k+ a year...

Not sure. Since I became a property owner, I do the house repair and renovation by myself. If I hire someone, I am there almost every time to make sure they do up to code and to the way I want it to be.

The suite was thrown out because the contract states any issues after filming go into arbitration. Basically stating that they signed a contract and any issues needed to be addressed to the contracter and not the show or its stars.

Property brothers need to be held accountable. This is the age of accountability. It looks like the property brothers don’t oversee their contractors work.

Very, very interesting. I've often wondered if all is what it seems on these property shows and if the makeover team ever gets sued. I'm shocked this involves the Scotts, since they've been around so long and they seem so well-respected....but shoddy work is shoddy work. Hope this couple wins their suit - they gave up a lot of money only to end up with all these problems.

I'm just absolutely floored that the homeowner pays for the work. That's a heck of a business.. Making video's that earn millions and not even having to pay for the basis of the show.

Honestly, having work done on my home three times in the last few years, this sh*t quality seems to be the norm now. It’s shocking the things you have to enforce that I honestly just began picking my battles with the worst things and fixing the minor myself… 🙄 Especially because even with the minor fixes, they cause more problems every time they touch my home. Glad this couple is enforcing this.

If you paid for new? Means repair is not on the CONTRACT. If this door, wall, stove, etc.. is small things issue means YOU NEED TO HAVE *"NEW EVERYTHING AND NOT PATCHING"* 😱😡😬

Pretty good scam. You pay us to do your house while we make a tv show and we get paid from that too. Oh yah, if all you wonderful people didn't pay us to remodel your house we wouldn't have a tv show. 😨

I am a retired building contractor 50 years experience. All of these pretty boys prancing around in front of the camera are frauds and should be avoided at all costs. What you need to do is find your own contractor. I have had customers tell me that they were visited over the weekend by people asking about me and my company. Do the legwork it is worth the effort!

The make money to show your house, your dreams, your privacy, your life, ANNND??? They charging you ?????? Mean... *"OVERCHARGED???* 😱😱😱 SHAME... I CAN'T BELIEVE IT.

I read that those shows are scripted. But still would never go on a show like that, or trust any of their contractors.

Sad part is, the workers probably got paid peanuts.. The show probably pocketed the most.. then the owner of the company probably cashed out, leaving those who actually did the work the tiny bit that was left.

Sooo basically their agreement was with the contractors and HGTV, the brothers are there for the show basically like actors is what I'm gathering. They likely used a local contractor. I'm sure HGTV attorneys have every detail covering them in their contracts😩

And now you see why I don't like watching HGTV or any other home makeover shows anymore...

As a contractor and flipper, I agree there are a lot of issues here. They may be small, but it's messy,. Sounds like they tried to call and get them to fix it and that didn't happen.

I live in Vegas, most of our contractors are under-qualified or incompetent. Beware of new construction also.

Thats why you buy your own land , hire an architect and a contractor. Help with the build. Keep an eye on all work done. 💯

As a homeowner, YOU should supervise the renovations as it's being done. This couple took the risk of letting a TV show renovate their house and of course there will be problems.

I was done with the Property Brothers when in this one episode the couple requested that the beautiful and huge carrara marble fireplace surround and overmantle be left in place and intact. The twin removed the lower portion of the wall supporting the overmantle and it of course crashed to the ground shattering into hundreds of pieces. Luckily no one was hurt. The twin said it crashed because it hadn't been installed properly. They charged the owner 10 grand to replace it.

Dang they jacked them up, I understand why they're suing.

Back in the day. I told my ex girlfriend that this show was ripping people off. She said I was stupid and didn't know what I was taking about. Yep she's my ex all right.

The show makes it seem like Johnathan works with & supervises the workers, but apparantly they outsource the work & take no responsibility if the contractors do sub standard work

They did the show for discounted materials, discounted labor and exposure and it backfired on them. They need to own some of this.

The brothers are just puppets and expandable, they can be replaced in a heartbeat.

Slam, bam, thank you ma'am is pervasive in these reality series. I see it in houses and cars. Even Chip Fooses car show was the same. In a show that re-visited the owners after a few years, the cars were wrought with problems and they had to do major repairs like new engines, new interiors, new paint jobs, etc. In the case of this house show and how the show has responded in the suits, it should be a lesson to not do things this way. Consider a point. When you are planning a major renovation you interview several contractors before deciding. Did that happen here? Instead, they got a $200k estimate, paid it without any choosing of contractors and then, I will guess, the show hired the lowliest fools it could find, spent half the money and pocketed the rest as show profit. What a scam!

Wow! I'd complain too. I thought the jobs were done for free so the brothers could generate publicity for their brand. They should meet with the couple themselves to make it right. The couple has a good eye. Most people don't know what to look for with cosmetic home repairs. That leaking door and electrical issues are nothing to play with!! Long term damage could occur. I'd be angry too, because they won't be able to sell that home if it can't pass an inspection. I don't think they're in it for the money since they paid for all their own remodel.

I don't care what anyone says. The house better look perfect when someone spends nearly 200k.

I learned a long time ago it's about promising you the world, taking all your money, and then giving you the least amount possible. That's how contracts work.

The grout in the range is fascinating...like where they do that at? Sounds like they're cutting corners on the quality of contractors they're getting to complete the work. It actually sounds like the brothers don't actually supervise the process off camera.

I stopped watching any on HGTV years ago when I realized it was breeding discontent in my heart toward my home which isn't fancy by any means, but it's well built and plenty good enough.

Who the heck is doing this work on these houses! This ridiculous, theses builders and contractors don't know what they doing. That brother that do the work on houses needs to make sure stuff is done right, I mean if he even know whats right.

If she has the receipts then the construction company needs to make it right. It's obvious their work is inferior.

With that kind of money, hire private professionals. Why go on TV? You don't have control vetting the contractor.

When my wife watches this show I tell her all the things I see wrong. As I do with all the shows like this. I'm not perfect but I had good teachers.

This happened along time ago when those shows where they customize peoples cars at some custom shop. All reality shows are just that. SHOW. Cheap parts and work. Not a secret.

I tho a lot of the shows were rushed They deserve their money back. Own up to their mistakes

I always noticed how property bros would dis prior builders not " building to code " on the show as if they do everything by the book and to the T . Now the truth comes out .... Not suprising. .

According to google it took 3 years but they settled 2.5 mil

A new house was just built next to our house. It took them just about a month (3 1/2 weeks) from start to finish on the building. I walked around it after they left each day to see what they'd completed. The walls are not straight, they bow at the top where the second floor meets the first. Several studs and boards are attached crooked. They slapped it up with no pride. Nails were flying off their nailers and several hit our cars and left scratches and dings. They used my driveway to turn around in and knocked over our flag pole with one of their pickups and then just drove away. Our security cameras caught it all on video. Zero pride in workmanship anymore. Just slap it up and move on to the next home. The new owners are moving from California to Virginia and have not seen the house being built. Just wait until they see the pictures we took for them! They might not be very happy.

The Property Brothers were there while this was happening and they did the reveal. The homeowners did the show because of the Brothers. They should be included in the Lawsuit.

What do you expect when you hire paid actors to renovate your home.

We have the same issues buying a house here in Converse, TX, where a homebuilder have built our house but, we've only lived here since August 2021 and we've already had about 15 Service Maintenance Requests that needs to be done and some of them have been completed. We are finding a lot more with kitchen cabinets warping, grout in the marble (master bathroom shower & guest tub shower) with marble tiles, where the grout was put on at the corners and instead of using a tool to make the grout spread evenly in-between the tiles, they use their fingers so there are some wide and narrow lines of grout and it's dried that way. Also, they have left pencil marking on the marble where they would measure the marble and didn't even clean the pencil marks. Also, we've been told that this home builder didn't put door bells because, they just didn't want to add $100 or more dollars to the house prior to selling it to new customers and that they cut corners to make it easier for the homeowners to buy their houses. We have lived here for now 6 months and a week, and we have had our sidings on the rear of the house warping and the foundation cracking on the rear porch of the house. We are also experiencing wind and/or air coming through the framing in the master bedroom through the two windows. I mean there are more that I have to request service for even though we've only lived here for 6 months and it was a house that finished it's build on August 9th, 2021. Just before you buy their homes from this builder, make sure you check the house completely before moving in. And, when we were signing the closing paperwork for the house, they didn't have a final walk through a week before, they had it the same day for when we had to sign paperwork and we only had an hour to look at the house and when we found stuff, we were told that it was our fault for doing the damages to this house, even after a day of living here. It's a nice house but, with all of the repairs within 6 month, which is really appalling to say the least, our next house will be new too but, at least with a reputable homebuilder that won't skimp on their products to sell the house. We moved from Pahrump, Nevada to Converse, TX and since we've moved in, we haven't been really happy with the house and it's constant repairs due to their productivity on building supplies so their customers can afford their homes. We also think that they also build their homes within 60 days instead of what they say it takes 90 days to build. Our home in Pahrump, NV was so sound and comfortable but, it was just an 1 1/2 hour drive back to the city of Las Vegas. Just be warned before you buy these homes. Make sure you get all of the information and record them and when you do a service request, make sure you keep a copy of the request also because, they switch so many "General Managers & Construction Managers" here in this community. We've had already about 5 of them now and we have to wait for each of them fix and repair our service repair requests.

It's hard to believe that anyone would pay for their own remodeling while the TV show producers made millions from advertisers for doing none of the remodeling. How these shows are still on the air is baffling.
