The recovered flight data recorder of Air France 447, which disappeared over the Atlantic on May 31, 2009, paints a disconcerting picture: a simple problem-a frozen pitot tube-and a pilot who reacted to it in exactly the wrong way.

My theory is that the Air France pilot probably thought the airbus autopilot had gone rouge and was pushing it into a dangerous situation (which they didn’t know that they were creating the dangerous situation) since it was a similar model with Qantas Flight 72, which went into a dive because of the autopilot.

even if they realized wrongly that autopilot was pushing it down (nose dive) , the airspeed indicator in that case would show a high increase of speed. The difference between life and death on this accident came down to Boeing VS Airbus control methods. On the Boeing both controls are synched both pilots know and feel what each is doing. On the Air Bus both controls are independent so if one pilot is pushing up and the other pilot is pushing down the result is ZERO movement in any direction. This can be a disaster if you have a stall as one pilot could panic and push the control in an opposite direction which is exactly what happen on Airbus Flight 447. Once the co pilot pushed the nose up on his controller the other pilot then pushed his own control forward to get the nose down but now there was a zero movement because the first pilot pushed his control all the way back already so the other pilot had no hope of recovering the stall. The main Pilot should of never left those 2 pilots alone on the flight deck during a storm and with Pitot tubes frozen.

You were exactly correct until you got to the end. The sensor froze up after the captain left the cabin. It was a known issue with the plane and they were being replaced. The captain probably believed they were competent to fly a straight line on auto pilot for a few hours.

@@neilkurzman4907 Yes, once the tubes froze up the auto pilot disengaged due to the speed of the airplane not being able to be determined as correct it was too fast of a speed warning, for a pilot at night and getting a warning that you are flying too fast this is why the co-pilot banked up to slow the speed down, but doing this st 39,000 feet is a recipe for a sure stall.

Why didn't the captain take over the plane sooner. When trained people make basic mistakes during a distressing, event it is usually a sign of panic. So is impatience and not allowing the airplane to recover on its own. Also flying over an ocean in the middle of the night you should know there is s possibility something was going to freeze. I don't feel that crew worked as a team to figure out what was wrong with the aircraft.

something that i noticed is that there was a "stickshaker" which is NOT implemented into an airbus, but there is a "Stall Stall Stall bleep bleep bleep" for the pilots to hear. Plus if someone is stressed they would not hear stuff because they will be to focused on something else.

How do you recover from a stall without knowing your air speed?
@Christianboot12
@Christianboot12 Год назад
The plane has a system that will tell you the altitude and the speed to recover from a stall lower your plane nose down and it will gain speed and then you can climb and maintain altitude.

The fault was a temporary freeze up of the Pitiotubes. If they had done nothing, the plane would have been fine, and they would’ve defrosted after about a minute during the dissent they were defrosted, and we’re reading accurately, but because they were stalled, they weren’t reading any air speed they were falling down. The pylon control was pointing to stick up the direction he wanted to go exact opposite of what he was supposed to do by the time the senior pilot came in and assess the situation. It was too late to recover. Interestingly, part of the problem is the layout of the Airbus cockpit. The side stick is hidden from the other pilot so you can’t see what they are doing and apparently the airplane didn’t warn anyone that both pilots were doing the opposite thing one pulling up the other pulling down .

The engines don't need to stop to cause a stall (not like a car). It's the air stalling over the wing that stalls. The engines were fine and working normally. That's the sad thing. So unnecessary.

Everytime I see people commenting on Bonin it drives me nuts. Hello, couch pilots. There was no valid info. They were flying at night with no clue to what was happenning. Bonin made an understandable mistake by reacting to a drop in altitude before they realised the autopilot went off because of a loss in information. Once he did that, this plane was basically gone since they couldn't know their status. Robert and Dubois did thought they were stalling, but that was a guess like any other. They could be in overspeed, who knows. I would say Bonin's main flaw was to fail to communicate his pitch position. Maybe there was time to recover.

There was no valid airspeed initially, that was it. (minor alt error due to the blockage) This was a pilot that had no understanding of his aircraft, it's systems, and could not hand-fly the damn thing. It was the over-controlling nature that led to this upset.
