In today's video, we go over the mindset of "Getting Rich by selling Pokemon Cards"
Despite the market improving vastly from where it was a couple of years ago, there is still the mindset held by many and impacted by various Pokemon influencers, that Pokemon can be used as "get rich quick scheme"
Pokemon has held an important part of our lives in various ways and impacted many of us differently. Is focusing on the money side of Pokemon a flawed approach? Let's talk about it!

It’s definitely a way to capture those same endorphins I felt as a kid opening booster packs. The contents are different, but the lottery of possibly opening some super rare card out of a $4 pack is just a ton of fun. The key is self-control in budgeting 😅

At the end of the day, do what makes you happy. Especially if it has to do with Pokemon and comes from a genuinely good place. I’ll always respect that.

I think we have all felt like this hobby can be overwhelming at times, especially given the prices. It’s important to know that all singles / sealed will go up and down. For me, it’s been a process to learn to pace myself and figure out exactly what it is that my goals are. There is so much put out from the Pokémon company you just can’t have everything, as much as we all want to.

Danny is one of the most real people on RU-vid for the hobby. I love videos like this from you. It’s kind of been overwhelming lately with all the new sets coming out and it seems like you have no time to collect that set and BANG the next set is here! It’s nice to hear you say stuff to back away and remember why you are in the hobby. Focus on one thing at a time. I’m not even done collecting crown zenith and I honestly think it’s one of the best sets since I’ve returned to pokemon. I think when people were scalping products it made it more stressful but seeing all the products on the shelves at Walmart helps slow me down knowing there’s plenty of time. Thank you so much for all you do and a huge thank you for the phanny packs!

I got back into the hobby because of Brilliant Stars. The trainer gallery introduced in that set and others thereafter is something I found myself enjoy collecting. I also play the game somewhat 'competitively' (I haven't won a tournament or league challenge yet) going around my city, competing in tournaments, participating in pre-release events, and hopefully making it to regionals with an ultimate goal of worlds someday.

What's important to me is twofold. 1. Reclaiming pieces of my Childhood I had lost. 2. Exploring my love of the franchise and community through collecting and sharing with others. Money and "Investing" comes second always. I feel Rarity is sought after and desirability can coincide with both rarity AND price points. It feels good to see a piece of your collection to appreciate values. But money and statistics, I feel, need to be secondary or tertiary to collecting cards and arts that you want!

To me it’s about reliving my childhood. When I was young I would always beg my parents for packs .. we weren’t the wealthiest but they would buy me what they could.. and now as an adult with my own job and money, it’s a privilege and blessing to able to go out and purchase these amazing products I could only imagine of owning as a child !

Opossum bud reccently featured the card shop i work for in the UK, sadly we had £20,000 worth of vintage cards stolen, still no sign of them sadly either. As for what I love about pokemon, it's literally my therapy basically, I got back into it when i started university a copule of years ago, and i've been collecting since, it really does just give me a moment away from the ridiculous level of stress i get from my course. Ontop of that, when i got into pokemon, my girlfriend gradually got into it with me, and so now we're both really big collectors, and both work part-time at a local card shop. Gotta love it really :)

I stopped collecting Pokémon when I was like 10. I exclusively collected sports cards. I always heavily played the games. Then 2020 rolled around and sports cards were dramatically inflated. It got to the point where 2020 Panini Prizm football was 2,000 a box. So I started buying Pokémon because it was the only thing on the shelf. Now my graded pokemon card collection absolutely rivals my sports card collection dollar wise both in the 15-30k range. Sports cards aren’t fun anymore. It’s too focused on the next 18 year old phenom and priced to the moon. Pokémon is exclusively about fun. I don’t open packs or by cards with any intention on making money. If the Psyduck or Pelipper looks cool that’s good enough for me

I am a sealed product collector from vintage toys to Pokemon. I love having an item that someone has not seen since they were a kid and the look they get on their face. Seeing a sealed item you got for a birthday or Christmas immediately transports you to the kid you were when you got it. I am a collector a heart but the value items gain over time is not beyond me. Some of these can be an investment if you ever decide to sell in the future.

I am currently enjoying the hobby right now because cards are easy to collect and don’t take up too much room in my NYC apartment! It also brings back nostalgia from my childhood. I love the sorting and designing of my highlight binders. Something that pleasantly surprised me after being away for quite awhile is the artwork and storytelling in the recent sets. I had such a great time collecting and displaying the Ralts, Kirlia, Gardevoir alternate art set from Scarlet Violet for example. Not looking to get rich, just having fun 😊

I got into it just in the last handful of months because it's a great thing I can do together with my kids. Selfishly, I mandate many of the parameters of what can go into decks - if a kid pulls a full art (something over $5), I give them the normal version of the card and the more valuable card drops into a box with their name on it. they can have them back when they are older and can understand the value. the can take them to show friends and such, but always protected.

I grew up watching Pokemon on TV, trying my best to never miss an episode. Unfortunately the TCG was not something I played, mainly due to accessibility and financial restrictions at the time. It was a community that I wanted to be a part of though and being able to experience the excitement of opening packs and pulling my first hit. Now that I'm older and in a better position to afford and value both the artwork and intricacies of each card, it's quite nostalgic every time I open a pack. In those moments I get the opportunity to relive a part of the childhood that I missed, but now with a greater appreciation for the cards and the community.

Base set dropped when I was 11-12. Didn't follow the hobby closely after I hit high school. I got real excited when 151 got announced and when I realized the potential in holding on to a sealed product for a few years really enticed me. And besides the original 151, I don't have that desire to rip packs that don't feature them specifically. I am having so much fun learning what to invest in from every perspective I can

I've started with Pokemon cards during base set when pokemon used to be on tv right before school. I've been off and on with it. My brother got me back into it in 2021 and I've stuck with it since. I love the competitive aspect of it, even tho my busy family life means I can't play in tournaments. Recently I've been buying certain cards from the past that bring me nostalgia and would like to get them graded for fun.

After almost a decade of being a competative MTG player I had to shift more towards collecting rather than playing ( due to work and family), but the collecting scene for MTG doesn't really exist much. Pokemon was what got me interested in trading card games as a child, and I never stopped playing the games, so it seemed like a natural transition back. I've been really surpised with how nice and welcoming the community has been.

I started recollecting last year with my son and it's brought a lot of joy to both of us. I then started digging deep and got into a few discord servers and wasn't a fan of how they go, so with a help of a few others we joined forces and created Pokemon deals community. Sadly the one person we let be the "owner" of the server enjoyed the little fame he got too much and started changing everything it stood for. We wanted to be a place to help everyone find great deals, met fellow collectors, and be about the community and now it's a shell of it's formal self. I was close to leaving the hobby all together as my son like most kids started getting interested and new stuff he loves pokemon but not as interested in cards as he was when we started. But then I asked myself that very question why do I collect? I enjoy the nostalgia of it all. From opening a pack to put the cards in a different order in my binder. I don't know how long this will last but I know I will enjoy it while I can. And when my son gets an itch to open a pack his old man will be ready! Thank you for your videos, and being such a great person to follow and learn from in this hobby.

My kids got me back into pokemon. It's really cool to watch them get excited over pulling a cool card or just periodically flipping through the binder and admiring even the common cards. I had no money back in the day so it's cool to be able to buy more than I could before. Of course my kids don't realize how great it is for their dad to be as interested in something as they are, but hopefully they will continue adding to the binders when they have kids in the future.

I think my view on the hobby has changed multiple times over the years. As a kid I just loved having these physical things that were associated with my favorite games. I loved opening my favorite Pokémon no matter what the rarity was. As I got older I started getting into competitive TCG and learning how to play the game. It changes my view on what I was opening and I learned about what a “hit” was. There was more value added to the packs I was opening because I understood it more. Now as an adult it’s a combo of those 2 plus the added bonus of knowing there is value to what I’m opening or keeping sealed. I have some stuff that is an “investment” but even if it were to fail I’d be happy to open it even if there was no value attached. I enjoy the fact that you can make your money work for you in this game and you can keep building decks or adding to the collection without adding more money from your own wallet. It’s a combo of all of these things that has kept me around so long and will keep me here so long as the product is good!

To answer the question at the beginning of the video: I feel as though I’m chasing my childhood dream that my parents didn’t let me have. I’ve played the games my whole life, but always was looked at someone that “never moved on” in my family. When I started making my own money and buying cards, I got that rush of excitement I hadn’t felt in ages. Opening with friends is so much fun! I don’t know how long this feeling will last but I don’t regret starting again at all.

I am completely fine with "investing" in pokemon cards or other collectible hobbies. I think nowadays "investing" gets blurred along with "flipping" or "scalping" but it is what it is. I have been collecting things (pokemon multiple times in and out) and use the value of the items I have collected to either continue fund the hobby or use those funds to transition in to another hobby. I think what happens is that people FOMO and they want to have everything. For me, I've decided to only really try to look forward and if I miss out on something, I will just wait for the next new thing. Pokemon will make something new and that's where I'll be.

My favorite part of the franchise is TCG, but I don't collect many physical cards. I'll probably play TCG live and get into collecting NFTs when Pokemon properly goes to those, but I just enjoy the culture and the hobby, including the market, and the economics of buy/sell/trade, even though I don't do any collecting or trading personally. My favorite is the nostalgia that I played when I was young, and I enjoy the artwork and story the most. The way to engage with the community is different for everyone.

I agree with everything you said, Danny. I've loved Pokemon ever since I was 8 years old in 1998. I first got into the anime, then the cards & video games. Of course once I got to be a teenager, I definitely fell off from it. It felt like a lot of people my age lost interest around that time. Funny enough, my interest returned at the same time that it did for lots of millennials: the launch of Pokemon Go in 2016 (those were just awesome times). The game seriously renewed my love for Pokemon, and I actually still play it! To this day, everything Pokemon brings me such massive and comforting nostalgia (I seriously almost cry every time I hear the anime's theme song lol) I currently collect Pokemon cards because I love Pokemon and I admire the artwork. A lot of the reason why I collect pokemon still is for the memories. I love looking at a card I own and remembering exactly when and where and who I was with, when I pulled that card. If that said card stonks out at the same time can't lie that does feel pretty sweet. I do also enjoy finding and selling undervalued cards so I can have more spending power to buy the cards I have practically zero chance of pulling. People should be looking to grow their collection at steady rate in the most finically savvy way possible. It's a marathon not a sprint.

I'm fond of the Lv. X's and of the Neo Sets. I like to hunt for lots with those cards, and take them out of the lots. Organizing the lots into sets, and trading the sets to someone who really values those sets for the cards that I value. It's such a rewarding experience when you trade with someone who has what you want and you have what they want, and you both walk away satisfied. All this in the spirit of nostalgia and Pokemon. The art on my favorite cards is spectacular, and I love displaying them in my home.

It's gonna seem like my answer just pulled from an assortment of others answers, but that isnt the case. I didnt read a single comment and just commented after you posed the first question in the first two minutes. Its obvious its a large air of nostalgia and never know what you could get and the community it brings together as a little one. It is for sure one of the best and most unifying hobbies of all time. Theres a reason this franchise has amassed way more money than any other, ever. Its because its so fun, reminds us of the best days of our childhood which no price can be put on. The times when we were stress free and just enjoying life and being kids. I got back into Pokemon cards shortly after the logan Paul thing and for me it was Chilling Reign. I bought a Switch and both games and remembered how fun it was to train and battle. So shortly after i started buying the cards and loved the artworks. Like remember when Pokemon Go came out? It was absolute chaos ( in a good way). Ive never seen so many people at my local park ever. and for months it was filled with people at all hours trying to catch as many as they could. Pokemon is just simply my favorite game ever.

Now, because my 2 daughters love Pokemon (altho the oldest is growing out of it and playing the game itself was too deep for her), I collect vicariously through them. Through buying collections, singles on eBay, and sealed products of many sets, we have a wide variety of different things, even if they aren't worth a massive amount. Favorite sets, favorite characters, favorite card types/subsets (i.e. rainbows) keeps the hobby fun and, most importantly, gives Dad something to have in common with my girls as they grow up. It's an all-around plus, altho I'll never stop missing my MTG collection. But, it had to be done and its sale served a higher purpose. Hopefully our little son wants to collect something when he's old enough too! Cheers!

It started out as a way to bond with my 9 year old. I fell in live with the artwork. There was just so much stuff when we initially started but now we have more of a focus on what to collect.

It’s upsetting to see people getting into Pokémon with nothing in mind but money, I can get someone trying to start a business or has one, but I don’t get people who think they are going to get rich overnight. I got out of Pokémon right around Emerald, and then I got back into collecting right around when Dragon Vault came out. I didn’t look at it like with a money sign and still don’t the feeling of opening a pack and seeing your favorite card pulled is Undescribable, it makes the world around go silent and the explosion of joy and completion surrounds you. I sold my whole collection I believe for 200$, (I had base up to ex emerald), back then with only one regret today and that was the gold star Ray’s I sold not because there pricey, that’s my all time favorite Pokémon card! AND DANNY YOUR THE GREATEST KEEP UP EVERYTHING YOU DO!!! I’ll be right here adding a like every video!!!

I’m a collector that just enjoys pulling cards with the odds of getting a chase card. It’s also nostalgia and also having the connection with my nieces and nephews as they build their collection as well.

This hits. Came back into the hobby right around Lost Thunder and didn’t start buying cards/packs until Tag Teams came around and fell in love with them. I finished mastering Crown Zenith because the artwork is insane and my next goal was to collect Tag Team alts. Then the tag team boom hit. So, going to collect Prime cards now and honestly that has been really exciting for me!

My journey started with pokemon go, as a way for me and my daughter to connect. When I was younger I used to be big into marvel and image comics. One day my kid and I were out playing Go and she had said let's go buy some packs and just like that here I am. She has since grown out of pokemon and I am stuck here...and I'm fine with that

I played every Pokemon game released by Nintendo and a handful of fan made games. I started collecting the cards about 9 months ago. What I love about collecting Pokemon cards is finding art of my favorite Pokemon that I caught and named throughout the games. I've spent a lot more money than I ever thought i would, but I never once thought about reselling. I want to enjoy this hobby and not stress over making a profit. I'm buying most of the alt arts and illustrations and matching them into themes that tell stories. My kids are too young to understand, but they love opening packs and I'm so excited to keep sharing this with them.

Honestly, its part gambling, part collector. Whatever piece of my mind has OCD tendencies just loves filling all the slots in the binder. Some of my favorite parts of collecting are digging through old bulk for singles from different sets, its relaxing and fun.

I used to collect as a kid, like most i'd imagine. Last year i got hit by a car and ended up with a bad broken leg. I got back into it while bound to bed and really met my inner child again. These days i too look at the prices and purchase stuff with the idea/dream of making profit. Kinda sad though, as the excitement of opening a pack has gone down with it. Luckily some really cool sets are coming and i will solely focus on opening packs instead of buying investment items.

Nostalgia is a big one, that new open smell hits right in the feels. For me there are also chase mons, ones I like/artworks etc and then there is some part of me that loves the thrill of getting a valuable card. I compare it to the same feeling pulling one of the big 3 starter evolutions back in the 90s. Charizard being a popular Pokémon but around my way that card sold for $50 (AUD) that was a lot of money for a kid to get a hold of for a $5 pack.

I got back into collecting pokemon cards because its exciting. Not in it to sell, yes since 2020 I've pulled some of the big chasers people want for money but i do it because I remember that feeling as a little kid and also because of the art work is just amazing.

I love that at release of a new set, you open plenty of packs and have the chance to pull your chase card and even when you don't and sell of some of the cards you don't care for as much and put that money into the next release. Rinse and repeat and slowly collect your chase cards while reinvesting into the next set.

I got into Pokemon to bond with my brother. Though we are years apart it is really fun opening and having a "collection" together that we share. Not coming from a lot of money and still not having a lot, it is something to enjoy though some people do ruin that part of the hobby. Whatever we can collect we do try and keep in mind what our goals are for the cards. 120% agree with your POV, Danny.

👏👏👏 MERCI !!!!! That’s all I will have to say ! I personally just discovered you, through my son. You summarized my whole childhood in one video! That’s what I’m trying to teach my little buddy, and baby girl… It’s not only about chase cards and $$. I love my « storytelling » cards 2! Thank you. I genuinely wish they were more of you, but glad there is not at the same time ! Pokémon was, IS not only a hobby is a passion. My son was all about, Spider-Man, but I got to be honest the day he started showing interest in Pokémon, I was the happiest woman/Mother. I finally had something to really share with him!!! Regardless of the fact that I was an adult, a woman, his mother…The pokemon theme song (French version 😊) really made sense that moment. Seeing his face, when he noticed that I knew all the lyrics, seeing his face when he saw my « storytelling » cards was priceless!!!!! This is not a rant this is, simple facts. Merci, encore 👏👏👏

We collect to hit the rare cards, i dont sell i just love the artwork and getting an ultra rare card is just a great feeling. My son and i have gone nuts when we hit a HUGE card. We have about 15 graded cards and most are PSA 10s. Its just nice to see our collection on the shelf and admire it.

I was 10 years old and when the Pokémon anime came out I missed my bus watching the first episode. Since then I collected all sets up to the end of Neo. Sadly missing some of my favorite cards now. Got back in with battle styles because of the alt arts. I am so excited for the hobby and the artwork. How it has changed is so exciting! All the new friendships I've made from making mental health/ suicide prevention awareness content with Pokémon was just the icing on the cake!

Collecting with my young son, never even new what Pokemon was before he got into it. Second is the excitement he has (and me) when we complete a set or pull a cool/good card. It’s something we do together that his Mom and Sister really aren’t into. It costs a lot though if you just want to open packs together. We started with Celebrations.

I love the ability to buy and sell these cards even though people may say its not being true to the "hobby". I just really enjoy the ability to move inventory consistently, playing the TCG game and meeting so many other people that do the same thing. I think its fair to want to make money while doing it because it's a lot more rewarding making some money while enjoying a hobby instead of just pouring money into it.

I appreciate that I can focus on the cards that bring back memories or have my favorite design. It’s super cool to see those niche collectors, like I know a person who only collects art rares, another who only collects rapidash. Everyone has their own thing and that’s why I think it’s going to be around for a while

I have always loved Pokémon. I collected cards as a kid, but unfortunately lost them all when I was younger. Decided to get back into collecting the beginning of this year with the release of Crown Zenith and I have been so hooked. It’s fun opening packs. Brings me back to being young and excited about collecting. I honestly just collect cards I think are great looking and of my favorite Pokémon. Some of the valuable cards are appealing to me and I do enjoy chasing them in packs. But in the end I just care about owning them for myself. Could careless if they grow in value over time. I appreciate your candor about the hobby and value your opinion. It seems most of the RU-vidrs on here just care about clickbait and value which I feel really diminishes collecting the cards as a hobby. But I have also noticed an amazing community of collectors and it really brings me joy seeing others enjoy something as much as I do.

I collect because well, most of my family died from my childhood. I don't have many friends, or family left and because of this it gives me a safe place to remember good things from when I was a kid. It fills that memory gap. I am nearly 32 years old now and am just collecting Japanese authentic holo "old back" cards. Gotta do it right for the fallen.
