One of the greatest poems ever written; Invictus is a rallying cry for those fighting hard times.
After being diagnosed with tuberculosis, W. E. Henley wrote Invictus in hospital while undergoing treatment on his left leg, which was amputated from the knee down. He was still only a young man at that time and wrote the poem as a demonstration of his resilience in fighting the disease.
Invictus was said to have shed light into the darker corners of his life when all else failed.
-
Full Poem:
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
#invictus

This poem has been a great source of inspiration and strenght this last year. It started when my wife of 15 years cheated on me, we were childhood sweethearts. She then up and left me and our 3 kids all alone for 3 months. When she came back and wanted to se the kids they refused, so she said it was my fault and retaliated with accusing me of rape and violence. Neither police nor social workers believed me. But they had nothing but her lies. Today the kids still with me, refusing to see thier mom, and they are so much happier now than ever before.

Thanks man a lot for those poems! You even inspired me to write my own poem(below): How can the man that never fell in the bottomless pit, Taste the full flavours of climbing the highest peak? Man is only content when his sacrifices are picked A strong man is only strong when others are weak How can victory have any taste when defeat was never served ? Truth is only real because of the lies that men speak Man's path to paradise is through hell-fire burned Thanks for anyone who read it! It's not the most well written poem but it speaks for my soul! You guys go overcome your pains and discover bliss. Much love

This is a good Poem. I especially like how A person can appreciate the truthe true sentiment and value of yet of victory by 1st understanding defeat, Yet much in the same way that the top of the mountain that diverse inclines is that is that much more worth it because of a climb itself. Your poem actually reminds me of 1 of 2 phrases spoken at the end of the Warrior quotes video that they have on this same channel "He who has never suffered, will not sufficiently temper his character." -Yamato Tsunetomo

This poem helped me immensely when I got out of the military. My head was a complete mess. The world I had adjusted too, and the lesson I learned, didn't make sense anymore. I felt so distant from the world and so out of place, yet I couldn't/wouldn't return to the hell I knew so well. I found this poem at the end of the first year out, when I was at my lowest. It felt like it spoke to my soul and I read it a few times a week still.

Similar experience. 20 years of running around the world non-stop. Lost a family. I understand where you’re coming from. And, I agree, about the poem. Some words can really strengthen our resolve to be better. If you want some more epicness for your day, check out a song by The Green called “Power In The Words.” I hope you like it. And, if you have a minute, say Hey and let me know how you’re doing these days, John. Well, I hope. And UNCONQUERABLE.

Memorized this in my high school and lately, I realized that I never forgot the 1st verse and the last two lines of this poem 😂 I searched it online and now everyday, I recite the whole poem in my heart every morning. My anxiety creaps in me everyday and kinda prevented me from moving ahead for years. Fears, dark imaginings, ugly judgements, and the hopeless dark view of the world in my eyes made me think that whatever I do, it wouldn't matter because everything will fail. Reciting poems I remembered in my youth but never understood before, now mattered so much as if some pretty ladder fell from the sky and beckoned me to climbed high again. It was a weird feeling, but warm and ticklish in the heart. I'm kinda thankful it was written and left for us to undertand

Very cool and life-affirming poem! A great genius wrote it in the old days. Man is the master of his own destiny. When someone tries to destroy it with sorcery and take the place of God, one should not forget that every soul is not alone in this world. We have ancestors up to the 7th generation and in their army there are at least 20 people with magical abilities. When such ancestors send us with a mission to this Earth, it is only for them to decide our fate, not for the enemy.

Enjoyed your heartwarming poem and excellent reading. I’m a poet specializing in Japanese forms: haiku, tanka, haibun, kyoka, senryu. I hope you don’t mind me sharing a tanka and my haiku, a tribute poem to Bashō’s frog with commentary by the late AHA founder and poet Jane Reichhold who considered my Basho haiku among her top 10 haiku of all time. What an honor. Here’s the Bashō poem and commentary: Bashō’s frog four hundred years of ripples At first the idea of picking only 10 of my favorite haiku seemed a rather daunting task. How could I review all the haiku I have read in my life and decide that there were only 10 that were outstanding? Then realized I was already getting a steady stream of excellent haiku day by day through the AHA forum. The puns and write-offs based on Basho's most famous haiku are so numerous I would have said that nothing new could be said with this method, but here Al Fogel proved me wrong. Perhaps part of my delight in this haiku lies in the fact that I agree with him. Here he is saying one thing about realism-ripples are on a pond after a frog jumps in, but because it refers back to Basho and his famous haiku, he is also saying something about the haiku and authors who have followed him. We, and our work, are just ripples while Basho holds the honor of inventing the idea of "the sound of a frog leaping is the sound of water". As haiku spreads around the world, making ripples in more and larger ponds, its ripples are wider-including us all. But his last word reminds us all that we are only ripples and our lives are that ephemeral. It will be the frogs that will remain. ~~ And my tanka: returning home from a Jackson Pollock exhibition I smear my face with paint and turn into art ~~ -All love in isolation from Miami Beach, Florida.
