A look into how Invincible condenses the superhero genre into one perfect series. My PATREON: www.patreon.com/videothai?fan... My Instagram: / videothai Music: Watching the Clouds by Lakey Inspired
Hey guys, just wanted to thank everyone for the nice words! This video took like a year of on-and-off work, but I never really expected it to surpass a few hundred views! If you liked it, go watch some of kaptainkristian's videos, he's my inspiration in many ways. Should have a new video out eventually, about HBO, reality TV, and my favorite TV show. :) In the meantime, what did y'all think about season 1 of Invincible?! I think it fixed a lot of the early issue's shortcomings, and the animation was on point! Especially for Western animation. EDIT: Since a lot of people have been asking, the music is Watching the Clouds by Lakey Inspired.
This guy saying what DC and marvel won't do but then Invincible came out 2003 and wasn't as known as it is today. Bruh no shit it was made almost 2 decades ago 💀💀💀
So in short “invincible” actually has an ending! I mean good god! Marvel and DC are basically going to outlive some of our grandparents! 😓 Edit: thanks for the likes all! This is the most I ever gotten! 🥳
having one big storyline that eventually ends and everything that happens in it actually matters taking chances for the sake of a more fresh, real feeling, and satisfying story..? yeah, that's one.
@Shin Shaman look, if you dont like invincable thats fine but you really dont have to be such an ass about it, i get you are desparate about subs, likes and shit but come on dont bother everybody and their grandma and their dog
@Shin Shaman i think how much importance and time you give to things is trash... talking trash of others and other stuff, what's your point again? I should stfu and watch the shit you like because you cant just let people enjoy what they do like and love?
It is basically the manga format, even big stories like One Pieces that are going for more than 20 years are clearly progressing and coming ever close to that conclusion, Different from Comics that have short runs, alternate universes, stories and reboots.
@@phelps6205 Yeah but like, One Piece is just an extended normal shonen, and by extended I mean is so goddamn long that no one normally want to start with it.
Many dc stories have an end and the problem with this premise is you can’t end the story of Batman’s or superman the demand is to high and people will always want more. Dc doesn’t have dozens of different canon versions it has currently a single version of those characters in its prime earth.
@@hesklairvoyant Doesn't Fate all have a proper ending? Fate/stay night Fate/unlimited Blade works Fate/Heaven's Feel Fate Apocrypha Fate Extra The only exception to that rule is Grand Order who is still going on, and they don't reset the status quo every short while.
@@Stormraider821 meh i grouped all of it into one saying all of fate has not ended yet and the franchise is still on going there like 25 other fates that dont even have animes and yes that isnt an exaggeration
That's also the reason manga is overall more popular than comics: they are self contained, staright-forward stories with no _reset button_ and you don't have to read other stories that while seem complex is just _prerp work_ to a plot that's ultimately not complex and will get _reseted_ at the end of the day.
You do know what plot armor is right? There were several times where Mark had a high chance of dying said by the characters and welp he miraculously lived, every show has some level of plot armor
@@orangeball8872 If said character is bullet-proof that isn't plot armour though, it is just a pre-established fact about their powers. It's another thing if the character keeps miraculously getting out of trouble for no apparent reason.
I mean, they do have comics with gore. A lot of Punisher comics, Wolverine comics like Old Man Logan, and a good amount of Batman comics with the Joker are very gory; just to name a few. It's just that a lot of their main heroes typically don't have violent stories. But if you are talking strictly about adaptions, then you do have a point. I am just pointing out the facts.
@@miguelmejia-holguin8799 tbh I really never gave much thought to those other comics since I only have a few Deadpool, cyborg, and suicide squad comics, so I've never read those that you listed so I couldn't argue.
@@Agustin_Leal He copy-pastes this response in almost every comment so yeah, it's literally just fishing for attention. Doesn't matter if their feelings are genuine or the sentences are just constructed to evoke a strong reaction.
I had the feeling that Invincible was fundamentally different in the sense that it follows more of a Japanese manga structure where like Dragon Ball, Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist etc. the story follows the entirety of the main characters' lives instead of the cyclical telling, re-telling and re-imagining of the same heroes, villains and supporting cast of characters in western comics
@@griffincrump5077 you're right, but as a trend I believe most western comics don't focus of the lifetime of their characters (of course having multiple writers/artists for the same property doesn't help w/ continuity either)
@@AzureRook it’s because of the corporate oversight so to speak that manga writers and more independent comic book writers like those of Image comics can avoid
Robert Kirkman is a genius. I absolutely adore the guy for his brilliant work such as Invincible and The Walking Dead. Once you read them it's hard to put them down. The story is so fascinating. Ryan Ottley is such an amazing artist too. The Invincible vs Conquest fight in the comics is drawn so brutally and you can feel the heat of the battle. Great video by the way! i'm so glad i got this recomended. You have a new subscriber. Keep up the good work!
Man literally the only reason I started picking up Amazing Spider-Man is cause of Ryans work on those. I adore his artwork and tbh I'm really liking what I've read of Spencer's run on ASM
Seriously, Kirkman is awesome. I once picked up an issue of The Walking Dead because I was stuck at a library for an hour, and even thought it was pretty far into the story, I still wanted to read the whole series, because it was so well written.
At the end of the day, a good chunk of comics are literally professional looking fanfiction: they don't affect the actual story and while sometimes they can be very interesting, other times they're just weird as shit
@Shin Shaman They're talking more on the stupid, random non canon shit that doesn't really say it's non canon that kinda just pops up. Shit like Marvel Zombies and DCeased. Or the weird constant 'reboots' that take place in super different universes or stuff like 'What if Batman was Superman? What if Wonder Woman had the powers of the Flash. Shit that kinda just pops up that is just there to be there.
So basically it's like a manga. One storyline. Exactly why I love this series, there isn't some complex universe that I'm completely unaware of unless I read over a hundred over issues of different comics. I can just pick up volume one and be all caught up until the end
Kind of wish we got to see Fight Force. For a team that consistently gets ragged on, we know very little about them. We didn’t even get to see their faces nor their powers.
I was lucky enough to read the 144 as they came out. And although I didn't want it to end I'm glad it did. It can stay as it was, always great. No need writers and resets and revolving stories. The journey is complete.
In my opinion it would be cool to see Terra and marky spin off See how the viltrum empire help the universe But I don’t want it to be 100 damn timelines 💀 But damn the story is so good
"they die for good" literally the female lead of the series auto-resurrects my dude, everyone now talking about how groundbreaking invincible is when its been around for a fuckin decade lmfao
Right? It's so funny seeing all these people watch the show like "Holy shit! How did I not know about this?", and all the comic fans like "Oh hi, you new here??"
I'm a huge comic book fan and collector yet I also didnt knew about this comic. Its because im a HUGE Marvel/DC fan.. but shows like this: Invincible, The Boys, Jupiter's Legacy.. open op new worlds for a broader audience. Most people dont know some of the "hidden gems" yet in comics and are scared to branch out into less known publishers. Im happy with these kinds of shows because it peaks my intrests and makes me buy more comics I would normally didnt even knew exist.
That’s why I like the immortal hulk at marvel. It’s a stand alone story that, even though he appears in other events, his story is not interrupted by them. It jas a completely different tone and feel than any other hulk comic and most marvel comics. It also has a definite end. It is ending on issue 50 and the creators have been aware of this for like a year so they can plan it out.
Immortal hulk storyline is such an interesting storytelling that just retcon the hulk that we all know, it's such dark gritty brutal, and I think gory as well
This is why Manga seems much more progressive nowadays, Stories END, and with this, Inspires other stories to continue in it's footsteps and build upon Amazing foundations, Hoping to see Writers actually let go for once and Hone their skills into creating more inspiring Characters
This exact reason is why I like manga so much. Even though some manga get canceled or drag on too long, a decent amount of them actually get an ending. Moreover, almost none of them get rebooted by another author, and almost all of them are under the creative control of only one person.
In my opinion writers in Marvel/DC should try to make a separate Universe where the Heroes story ends. One of these Characters I think that deserves a happy ending is Spider-man since he is like a guy that I know likely retire and live quitely
I had the pleasure of sitting down to read all 144 issues of invincible after I watched the Amazon series and man I’m happy with how well it was all done, the show certainly has budget cuts in areas but that’s understandable, they did a great job emulating the characters on page and putting them in screen.
Hey man. Great video. It's nice seeing Invincible getting some much needed attention from the Amazon series. Also fantastic work with the motion graphics. Very well done.
I'm worried that the show will overshadow the comic. I'm already seeing comments on other videos that say the show is better than the comic. If they bring up the comic at all.
@@KalKratos really? Any comment from people claiming to have also read the comic says that it’s a lot better, though maybe we’re just looking through different sorts of comment sections. I’m a second generation geek and my dad grew up on comics back when there was still a sense of meaningfulness and he got me hooked from an early age, but any of the times I picked up a modern comic it was just so radically different from anything I knew about the superheroes and so rarely followed or preceded by anything that made sense of the mess that I gave up on comics being for me what they were for him. I was fine sticking to the shows and movies that while flawed in their own ways at least seemed to be self contained, from what I’ve seen and heard of Invincible and this video in particular I think that maybe it’s the comic I need to give another chance. Thank you.
@@griffincrump5077 for sure, to be completely honest though. I really disliked the show and I'm not sure if its cause of my bias having read the comics before but like I couldn't even make it through the second episode. I just didn't enjoy it, to me it almost felt like they were going hyper edgy and I really disliked that. If I think of it as a different universe it helps a bit but it just wasn't my cup of tea
So there's a huge problem with this criticism of Marvel and DC. Those characters DO get definitive beginnings, character arcs, and endings. Just not in the main comics. All the movies, games, and alternate universe stories, are exactly this. They can't just throw away the main continuity in favor of only doing stories like this, and also there aren't enough writers out there who actually want to commit to doing an entire AU about Batman's beginning, middle, and end. We've seen these stories done, especially for the main heroes. Christopher Nolan spent practically a decade of his career making just three Batman films that tell his entire life story, and you want that, but all the time? It is a HUGE commitment to tell a story on this scale for these characters that have been around since WW2. And even moreso is it difficult to actually live up to the stories that have come before. The reason the main continuity where nobody can die forever works, is because it allows writers to come in, tell the story they want to tell, WITHOUT recreating the universe from scratch. There are many downsides to this obviously, but it's so much more preferrable than literally recreating the Batman/Superman/Spiderman mythology on a yearly basis just so writers can have complete freedom. And like I said with living up to the stories that have been written in the past, nobody wants to make the next Dark Knight Returns for Batman because they know it is very unlikely they could pull off such a character redefining story anywhere close to being as good. That said, I wish we could get more AU stories like that, but it is simply that people are just too afraid to do it. Really think about it, what would you do if you got a job at Marvel/DC and they said "Okay, we want you to write a Spider-Man series starting from scratch, make it faithful to what everyones ideas of these characters are, establish the universe however you want, and end it however you want". Like at that point what do you even do with that much freedom but also have to make it about a character that's been written hundreds of times before?? This is the reason people just make original heroes when they have freedom to do whatever they want, because having that freedom with these legendary characters is more of a huge job than it seems.
I think the state of Marvel and DC is actually very reminiscent of our understanding of ancient Greek Mythology. Both have tons of inconsistencies and hold a large cast of characters ranging from well known (Zeus & Spidey) to obscure (Khione & Squirrel Girl). This is a very powerful tool for writers as they can make a work using these characters and as long as it is mostly true to the existing characters it will fit into the rest of the stories easily.
Excellent take op, I wish the manga and anime fanboys out here understood that. It's all about perspective, and it's simply no comparison at all between an IP that's been around since the 1940s versus a self-contained universe like Invincible's.
i kind of prefer that. It makes them feel more like friends you've had for years than fictional characters. Their life isn't defined by a storyline written by some guy. Their life spans dcades with dozens of little moments, places and people they've met and that's kinda how real life is. I feel like I *know* Peter Parker because we've followed him for years since he was 15. I've copied and pasted this in earlier parts of the comment section but I'm lazy.
Fr, the comparison between DC/Marvel vs any comic/manga out there is stupid because they're very different. I think it's incredible how there's some writers that can make good story out of character that have been established and used for many kind of story since their grandparents era. If there's any manga character that already established as long as these DC/Marvel characters and used for different kind of storyline, then we can talk.
Damn straight the ending was bitter sweet. I enjoyed it very much and wanted to see more of Mark's journey with everyone. But Invincible actually having an end is one of the things that makes it special imo
The Ultimate Spider Man comics basically did the same thing for Spider Man, yes there were some crossover characters from other series, but they weren’t really important for the series. It gave Spider Man/Peter Parker a full complete story, with a lot in depth drama and overarching story lines that manage to fit neatly into one narrative about someone coming to age. Another big bonus, and in my opinion the most important touch to the storyline was the vast amount of “slice of life moments” and overall major focus on the characters outside of the super hero stuff. Definitely worth a read just as much as Invincible does.
@@hyperion3145 Edit: please mark your reply with spoilers I’m also going to spoil a few important plot lines It does have an unofficial ending though, everything outside of the comic run doesn’t really matter, and has pretty much been ignored by the writers of the Ultimate Spider Man comic, which means that the entire original run can be enjoyed on its own, unlike the mainline Spider-Man comics which have a bunch of loose series that tie in to the main title, and can only be enjoyed if you cherry-pick storylines out of thousands of comics, which isn’t really an issue with Ultimate Spider-Man since there is a line that marks the end of Peter’s story, the revival thing is bs that was never taken seriously.
@@ABCodeX It's not really a spoiler considering the plotline is years old at this point. On the other hand, forgetting about a story isn't really much of an ending, and I'm not exactly sure what they've done with the original cast since they've introduced Morales so I don't know what exactly is happening, but it's just a big plot thread that I'm not exactly sure why or how they agreed to pick that up and leaves the original run a little open ended. Sure, you can enjoy the original run by itself, much like you could enjoy most comics by themselves, but it doesn't change that they are still going. Personally, I prefer the original ending (this shouldn't be controversial), but the writers really fucked it.
I feel like Ultimate spidey and invincible can be viewed in the same frame as each other. It's just a shame he died after only 2 ish years of being spidey(he got his powers when he was 15 and I think the final fight happens a lil after his 17th birthday).
@@hyperion3145 It did have an end tho. While both Peter AND goblin came back, Peter himself opted to take mj and leave NY, giving the mantle to miles completely. Goblin himself I think was taken into custody. The story of Peter was over, and it ends with miles being spidey, the title Is changed too.
@Shin Shaman I actually read some of Marvel’s later issues, just not those of the very first or some that are too old (I couldn’t find them anyway since I’m from Vietnam). And if Invincible is really hot trash for you, then your preference is just way too different, well, almost everyone else watching this video.
I'm reading through the series and I'm about 117 issues in right now, it really amazes me that I've seen lots of villains and I've seen lots of side characters with unique backstories and character traits, alignments, motives yet the the plot and the flow of the story is not messy at all. Action, drama, tragedy, plot twists, It is just so well balanced that when I take a look at the past issues I really can see how characters changed and why did they change that way. Amazing storytelling and character writing which we barely see nowadays 👏👏
I never understood the difficulty from jumping into comics. Its rly not that hard if u just put in a fraction of effort. Marvel and dc literally make so many jumping on points for you.
It’s basically what they do is explore the characters by daily interactions not battles and such. As well as they make the comic realistic, like characters get trauma, tough decisions get made and they do dirty work. One of the best things I have ever discovered in my opinion.
I feel like you're giving it a bit too much credit. Comics are so much more than Marvel and DC, its an entire genre. There are brilliant self-contained stories all over the place, runs with definitive a beginning, middle and end, and plenty of brilliant characterization. As for death, in Invincible I never fear for Marks life, Eve's or a handful of others. They grow and react to everything happening, but there is no real consequence to fights, they just return an episode later with no injuries. Really, your title should be more about how they can do something the big companies can't, but the individual writers can.
The issue is here that individual writers can't really make it in the american comic world where dc and marvel own a big majority of comics so instead of just complaining about the system we should just notice more of the individual writers, for instance this video
@@silene7366 What is Image , boom , IDW and Darkhorse ? All of those companies publish creator owned comics. Hell DC and Marvel used to do the same thing with their vertigo and Epic lines of comics that provided stories self contained stories with a definitive ending.
@@auberginemanproductions1608 Right. And as far as DC goes they're still putting out amazing short stories in between ongoing arcs / events. Those self contained short stories are hidden in the ongoing books but they're there. You just have to dig in to the series and get to know the characters first.
@@stvltiloqvent Precisely. For example, King in Black changes a lot of stuff about Venom which will have a big impact on his comics for a while. DC and Marvel still put out excellent comics sometimes
@@auberginemanproductions1608 Marvel's got a small percentage of good stuff rn. Hulk, Daredevil and Spider-Woman are pretty good and Runaways has been the only consistently good comic marvels put out from the past few years but it flew under everyone's radar because... well it's Runaways
"That final page of that final moment was one of the most bittersweet- you know what? Just go read it for yourself." That hurt, but fine. Maybe I will.
Also yes! I hate that DC and Marvel (primarily marvel because Disney fucks things up with their other stuff) do the stupid multiverse shit. I mean it's fine if you want to do over and change something, but don't go saying "this is the result of ______ doing _______ and making an alternate timeline." If that were the requirement for making multiple interpretations of a franchise or redoing something in a franchise, we might as well count the stuff that happens in OVA's of some anime out there as the overall cannon and say that they are alt realities or something (like FMA and FMA Brotherhood are both fully cannon or something and are somehow alt timelines). I like the concept of Marvel's "What If?" Series showing what would have happened if they did something differently, because it gives the freedom of keeping what you have in the MCU but still show what other ideas were brought up at that time
There are actually two characters that "die" and come back. One it's actually part of their character. The other is like a regular comic death and then it's like surprise, they didn't actually die!
honestly I thank Amazon for making the series, I cant believe such a gem was hidden from me for so long. I finished the comics as soon as I finished the series and really a thumbs up for not spoiling the ending !
To be fair immortal was straight out said that he’s immortal and Atom Eve caaaaannnn manipulate and rearrange molecules soooo it makes sense to use it as such
I really liked how the comic ended. A lot of cliches, but that's what comics are. You don't have to be different to be better. Just use your strengths to your advantage. It was a nice conclusion to a long-running series.
One of the reasons why I'll always prefer image comics to others. Aside from what's mentioned in the video, there's the fact that their stories make way more sense and are more grounded in the world they take place in, there's no pointless brokenness, power scaling also makes sense and there are generally more mature stories that deal with a variety of topics. There isn't a plethora of Superpowered and skilled people becoming superheroes forming teams and leagues. There are superpowered and skilled people navigating their world and trying to live life as best they could. Saga, East Of West, Black Science, Outcast, Revival, Invincible, Monstress etc... Just excellent world building and storytelling...
This video deserves way more views. This comics absolutely amazing and deserves as much recognition as it can get. Invincible vs conquest, the Great War, the dark sensitive topics the comic undertakes. It’s such a thrilling story that’s not like Japanese manga where the protagonist faces no change besides getting stronger there’s clear well-paced character development throughout the whole series. I’ve read 2/3 compendiums and I’m extremely excited and sad to read the final third. It’ll be a wild ride but this is by far my favorite American comic I’ve read in my life. Very hard to compare it to manga, books, or tv but it’s definitely in the top 30 stories I’ve experienced.
I mean it's Image Comics. That's what they do. Watch any documentary about Image Comics and Todd McFarlane (the literal person WHY Image even exists) and you're going to go down a rabbithole where you never see Marvel the same way again.
Wow... this editing is fucking nuts. I love it! With that out of the way, today I just finished the Invincible comics. I had considered it having enjoyed the animated adaptation so much, but this video was ultimately the catalyst for me actually going through with it. Only till I rewatched this video did I realize just how bittersweet that ending was. And one more thing: thank you. I loved the comics and probably wouldn't have made the time investment of 140+ issues if it weren't for your comment about the ending. Invincible is now my favorite comic book of all time (the only one I have read, in fact) and one of my favorite pieces of fiction of all time in general. For introducing me to this amazing series and getting me back into reading, you have my gratitude.
@@videothai Thanks for the suggestion! I will read either destroyer or spawn next. If youve read the latter, do you have an opinion on it? Would you prefer it over destroyer?
@@unoriginalnormie4706 I'll be honest I have yet to read Spawn! Definitely need to. Destroyed is only 5 issues though, and it leans more comedic like Invincible (also drawn by Cory Walker).
I’m currently writing my proposal for Image for the past two weeks, it’s a project I’ve been working on for almost 10 years now and honestly I’m stoked. But seeing videos like this really does make it all seem like I do have a genuine shot at this. Also, absolutely lovely video my guy
Best of luck my dude! If you do get it published, please remember to come back and drop the name of the comic so I can pick it up! If you don't, hopefully I pick it up by chance lol.
@@davidgn40 reading this made my night. Hopefully things go well with the review. If it doesn’t, I’ll just have to keep pushing forwards until I make it. But in the event that it does, keep an eye out for The Unknown
As someone who always wanted to get into comics but never got to this perfectly describes my confusion as an outsider. There's so much potential in all these characters interacting or taking a deeper artistic look at some heroes and their villains but at the end... it's a convoluted mess of AUs, time travel, over the top stakes that essentially kilk everything interesting about the original stories. It's why I loves the TV series Gotham so much, even with its faults, quirks and it going off the path by a far fetch its actually still a fairly simple, lively story about the city of Gotham. Something that I can't seem to find in the comics, it feels like.
I really appreciate that instead of showing the ending, you encouraged it to be experienced, I cant tell you how many times I've had thing spoiled due to curiosity. Dope video man.
Great video. Linear long form storytelling is definitely my favorite form of media and invincible does it so well for the most part. I read it at the perfect time and it will stick with me for years to come.
Remember thr main target audience for cartoons is children and superhero comics frequently get turned into kids cartoons. This is important because: 1. Most of our first experiences with these generas are these shows 2. Children's media is highly censored so characters will survive many very lethal events. How many times is team rocket hit by flamethrower? How many times is batman hit by an explosion or punched by something on Superman's level. The gore shown in the show is what would realistically happen, is it excessive, probably, but not unrealistic. Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool movies are another example of R rated superhero movies showing a more realistic gore/profanity level.
Doubtful but personally imo the boys comic is ass but the first season of the show is decent. Invincible is definitely going to have an effect on western animation though
independent comics are like Manga they have (usually) a self-contained story. that's why most of the comics i read are from image, boom, etc. when i do read Marvel/DC it's normally the self-contained ones like Injustice or Runaways
Excellent video. Has a nice pace and smooth, unobtrusive editing that a video essay like this needs to be visually captivating with well done voiceover that feels practiced and deliberate but not fake. If you have more to talk about I think you could find success doing this.
I really loved this video. Great explanation, soothing voice with accompanying music that isnt too loud, great animation and beautiful transitions. Thank you
pheww. Thought I was going to get spoiled. A story that has an ending is rare to see in nowadays. They don't want to end it because that would mean that their source of income is gone or they don't have the money in the first place to end it. It always have that incomplete, odd feelings when a story has no ending in sight.
I wondered why this was recommended for me as someone who isn't the biggest comic book guy around and then the credits card hit and it all made sense. You got good tastes in free music chief ;)
I respect you for not spoiling anything and encouraging people to go read it for themselves. I also love the fact you and I have the same description for Mark, that he's Peter Parker with Superman's powers.
The ending was like a manga's final issue. To those who haven't read, Spoilers ahead, don't read before viewing this comment... i admire the fact that they tackled how Mark will rule the Viltrumites and the surrounding worlds in the universe in a peaceful, democratic style of reign. It was like all is as it should be.
I just started on Rebirth and pretty much catch up with everything. Well, even if I don't understand some event, I just read comments. There's always that one guy who read almost everything.
Invincible has got to have one of the most satisfying endings I've ever read/seen in any form of media, I love the fact that it pretty much shows what mark has after 500 years
