Invisible Mending: The Magic of Kimono Restoration

Some might see a tear or stain on a beautiful kimono and think the garment can never be restored to its former glory. But Japan's kimono restoration artisans aim to do just that. These master craftsmen can make small holes seem to disappear as though they never existed, and completely transform discolored garments. High-end apparel makers around the world have taken note, and are now applying these techniques to conserving Western fashions like suits and gowns. At this talk, Koshiro Tatematsu of kimono restoration service Chojiya unravels some of the mysteries behind these fascinating mending techniques, and reveals how they're being used in the fashion world today. Kimono restoration artisans Yoshiko Goto and Minako Mizuochi will show off some of these fascinating techniques first-hand in on-stage demonstrations.

I can kind of see what they are doing. They have a piece of fabric and align it to match perfectly over the pattern where the hole is. They have frayed the edge of the patch. Then they use a piece of thread to loop around each individual piece of thread on the frayed edge, weaving it in from front to back. Then iron the fray threads down in the back side. Then put a patch over the back side to secure it all in place. It must take a long time to catch each one of those fray threads and weave it in. I'd actually like to try this.

Having a tiny awl type needle would help make it easier. I wonder if those "easy thread" needles would work? Going to try it sometime.

In Portugal there has been a similar technique for a long time. The cerzir is also a very popular technique, but it is in the process of extinction, since it was not very widespread after the clothes began to be more accessible in terms of costs.

Impressive. Useful for those of us who sew, with the potential to have spare exact match fabric left over from construction. Though I wish there was info on how to keep those threads now on the back of the fabric in place once the patch was done.

Great, but where can you get this done in the U.S.? Or can you send your kimonos to Japan? What if the kimono is vintage? Sounds pretty expensive, too.
