Beautiful scene from "An Invitation to Dance". Mr. Kelly performed, choreagraphed, wrote and directed this wonderful film. Miss and love you Mr. Kelly. You are and were the one and only. Your smile is Beautiful. 🌹
So relieved to find this! I watched this movie years ago as a child. Completely breath taken. But could never remember the name. Tried so hard to search different key words to no avail. Finally remembered that it was a Gene Kelly film and here I am!!!
My parents were big Gene Kelly fans & my mom told me I was named after the ballerina Tamara Toumanova. Never saw her dance until now. Wish I had her grace. Even after all the ballet lessons, I can still trip over my own shadow.
A very beautiful , expressive and magnificent, fierily .... I'm so happy that I discovered another Georgian bright star of world ballet !!! Thank you very much for posting madame Tamara's rare video, fantastic!!!
Gene Kelly at his best! This movie is the realization of a great idea, a film without words just using the language of dancing. Luckily I have the whole picture. I love it! According reliable sources Tamara was Armenian, however some says she was Georgian. Her family name exists in both languages (Tumanishvili - Georgian, and Tumanyan - Armenian). My mother's family is of Armenian origin, so I claim that she was Armenian - of course.
Back when dancers still smoked :-) Fantastic movie, fantastic duet, fantastic ballet (which should have a place in repertory in fact). And great music.
@@esmeephillips5888 The company bus i used to tour with back in the 80's was blue with smoke driving back home after a show. And there were plenty of drinks going around too. Nowadays dancers sort of have an image to protect. Back then a lot went under the radar.
@@girlfromthebronxbywayofelb7288 still sounded good to me in Les demoiselles de Cherbourg- where a lot of the rest of the cast were dubbed, but i think that s still his voice there.
Fun fact: Toumanova was an occasional feature in pictures, but she was no stranger to newer media. As early as 1933, when one of de Basil's 'baby ballerinas', she was in the visiting company that performed on the BBC's low-definition experimental television service, in a relay from London's Alhambra Theater. Other Ballet Russe members in the show included David Lichine- and Leonide Massine, who would return with her to the BBC in 'Spanish Fiesta' 47 years later!
The authenticity of the movements in this ballet Gene choreographed show just how astute a dancer/choreographer Gene Kelly was. The way he throws the cigarette package at the very beginning of the ballet is the exact movement a man would make if he was enraged, the slightly tipsy walk past the lamppost off the curb, and then the boozy, conflicted encounter with the streetwalker with its mounting sexual tension--its just perfect . Compare this to Gene's Slaughter on 10th Avenue danced at the end of the (dreary) movie Words and Music that Gene choreographed for himself and the new dance ingenue Vera-Ellen (who did not know how to move sexually and sensually as the great Toumanova does here.
@@lurking0death Actually 5'8" and Cyd was 5'6". Gene put her in a Louise Brooks wig and three inch heels in "Singing In The Rain." According to Cyd, it was Fred Astaire who was worried about her height and asked Hermes Pan to check that out.
I think they meant to click on the like and they were so inspired by the dancing that they didn't notice their mistake. That's my guess. ( : I had to order the DVD of the film as soon as I found out it existed. Such genius.
