Did you know InWin makes server cases? Neither did I, which is why I was very excited for the opportunity to review the InWin IW-RS212-02SN 2U Server Chassis. Does it stand up to high-end OEM cases?
A huge shoutout to Seagate for providing the hard drives in this series of videos.

What am I drinking???
I've got a Gluten-Free Stout on today's video from Ghostfish Brewing (Seattle, WA). The Watchstander Stout clocks in at 6.5% and 30 IBU. Rather than using traditional malts (which contain gluten), the Watchstander uses malted millet, buckwheat, and brown rice to achieve it's roasted finish. While it is far different than any other stout I've had, it does have it's own unique characteristics that I really enjoyed. The rice was a bit clingy though, leaving an odd bitter taste behind. Not bad though.

The NMI button is used to force the server to panic, also causes the server to reboot. This is sometimes used by support to create a dump file for analysis.
@johndododoe1411
@johndododoe1411 2 года назад
Historically it was used to freeze the server and activate a remote debugger to analyze and fix things before continuing. Unfortunately, the market leading software (NuMega SoftICE) for this got caught up in a series of company mergers and died in the early 2000s.

I know many small ones which also do solid Server content, not like LTT who knows nothing about them, "My PlayHouse" gets a lot of Servers and plays with them, and he has a huge homelab also. I bet there are many small channels that do server based/ entreprise based Hardware revivew and stuff but they arent famous enough for us to know

Does drinking over a server makes me anxious? As someone who spilt water, coffee, (belgian) beer AND wine over a laptop and it survived well for 7years.... nah! That's quite fine! XD

Non-Maskable Interrupt It's typically used to force the system to panic or reboot. Useful, for instance, for when your system is in a masked interrupt loop (interrupts that can be ignored) and you want to force a reboot.
@Vatharian
@Vatharian 5 лет назад
NMI is non-maskable interrupt. Basically that's a killswitch/stop, or 'bluescreen button', if you will. Useless for normal operation, useful for debugging.

If you do have a SAS expander backplane, you can control those fans via the SES interface, if you connect the expander to an SAS HBA card, and the fans to the backplane itself. It takes some researching but you will be doing it the proper way and make the wiring in your chassis way much cleaner than a bunch of fan extension cords.
@thejeffchen
@thejeffchen 5 лет назад
Regarding the airflow, I thought about building an air shroud with lego blocks, so at least one of those fans can be concentrated on the CPU. But later I did get a 2U sideways cooler for my processor and didn't need the air shroud after all.
@DazzaDirect
@DazzaDirect 5 лет назад
@@thejeffchen i once made one for a similar 1u passive in a 2u rack by cutting a 2 litre fizzy drink bottle length ways from top to bottom to make a tunnel and installing it from one of the fans on the fan rail in the middle to the back of the case in effect creating a wind tunnel, it worked well

NMI = Non Maskable Interrupt. Some server motherboards have header for NMI. Button will generate NMI, which in some cases will act as reset with memory dump before that, can be used for debug or just to generate interrupt which can't be hidden. For example Ctrl+Alt+Del on Windows will generate NMI. NMI is also generated by some hardware errors - for example memory error.
@CraftComputing
@CraftComputing 5 лет назад
Well on mine it turns the server on ;-)
@johndododoe1411
@johndododoe1411 2 года назад
Ctrl-Alt-Del is not an NMI. It is the Windows Secure Attention Key, which is caught deep inside the Windows kernel to guarantee that whatever you type your password into after that keypress will be a genuine part of the Windows Login system code, and not some password stealing virus or Trojan Horse.

NMI (according to IBM) is: "NMI; A non-maskable interrupt has occurred, or the NMI button has been pressed." Pretty much what you'd expect. Network Messaging thingy, to be technical! Thanks for the Review Cheers (Prost!)!
@johndododoe1411
@johndododoe1411 2 года назад
Actually, the NMI is/was a CPU feature for the one emergency interrupt that must work even if a frozen operating system turns off all other interrupts and then hangs. On IBM PCs, it would get used for RAM ECC/Parity failure, but because extra RAM could be installed on addon cards, people figured out that wiring a button to it was a way to get an unstoppable debugger activation method. Great review. I ended up going with an iStarUSA D-395-DE15BK - 3U, (15) trayless 3.5" bays. Have it built, but waiting on a good deal on the first 5 HDDs (man drives are expensive). Went for a slightly taller chassis specifically to put in some quieter Noctua fans and coolers (NH-D9DX i4 3U). Even thought this will be going into a cabinet in my workshop/tech closet, did not want to deal with the extra noise. I only recommend 1U or 2U builds for those that are limited on space, otherwise you almost always have to compromise on something.

$850 for a case , is it gold plated, ok it comes with 2x psu a 12x SAS plane with 2 SAS connectors , still i think its bit too pricey , don't get me wrong i like the case but i really feel you can get a Chenbro , SilverStone or even a 8 bay In-Win IW-RS208-02 2U Server Chassis for about £200 i cant see the extra value but then i see cases @£3000 so maybe its fair value, thanks for the upload

@@edwardgreenjr167 yeah i get that but still the psu's maybe worth about £100 each and the hot swap bays about £20 per drive caddy , that still comes in about £450 then the case about £50 that comes to about £500 which is about $600 so i dont think it is justified , i had done the maths and stand by my original statement that i feel the price is a bit too high , considering the other offerings i mentioned above , YMMV

it only has 2 SAS connectors because it's a full 12G SAS Expander backplane.
@BenQuigley
@BenQuigley 5 лет назад
Dual and redundant don't exactly mean the same thing, redundant means one can fail without downtime. Dual simply means it has two, for instance if you have lots of accelerators you may have dual PSUs but each individual PSU can't support the full load of the system. Not very common though.

If you're feeling brave and helpful, you should do a video on reflashing that SAS controller from IR to IT mode because there is a TON of not-exactly-right information out there. It took me five OSes, three evenings, three thumb drives, and two re-flashing apps to find a combo that worked.
@CraftComputing
@CraftComputing 5 лет назад
It's something I'd tackle if every single SAS card wasn't completely different. I've flashed RAID to HBA on cards before, but each one required a different OS, or firmware, or some little detail to make it work. There's really not a universal solution that I've found :-(

@@CraftComputing Ah! That could certainly explain some of the headaches I ran into. I also went back and listened instead of just going off the visuals -- I hadn't realized that you had an HP branded card which I've read makes for an extra level of pain.

Thanks for the awesome review of the InWin RS212 2U enclosure. I do have to say that most of the Amazon links for InWin server products are outdated or obsolete. Nevertheless, I really enjoy your hardware and craft beer reviews. Keep up the good work!

I tried to track down the deep InWin pedestal chassis online and it seems like a roll of the dice. Serve The Home did an interesting thing on them. They're a systems integrator/config validator and most of their server stuff doesn't seem like they're destined for the retail market. Maybe it's excess base stock that does bc there are a bunch of mid-tower desktop cases that are a dead ringer for the older Dell Optiplex Mid-Towers. I feel like I saw more of their backplanes and such for sale in years past.

Fs12-nv7 has a similar design and it has a air shroud. Then only the suggestion is I can take a photo and send it to Twitter and you can adapt design to suit your needs. Use a mining fan adaptor 6 fan header to 1

I've found that buying netapp drives from ebay are a really good deal for 7.2k sas drives. II got my 2TB hdd's for 35 dollars each. Note you will have to reformat them to 512 byte sectors vs the custom 520 bit sectors that the netapp system uses. There is a really good guide on level 1 techs that worked for me. Although it took about 8 hours total to wipe the drive, and then to resector it. You could put a 20TB raidz2 in there such that you can have 20TB of redundant data. If you need IOPS you could setup 6 stripes of mirrors and have 12TB with 2TB drives.
@CraftComputing
@CraftComputing 5 лет назад
I've been rocking 6TB HGST Helium drives lately. You can score them for ~$110 on Amazon, which puts them equal in $/TB with the 2TB Netapps, and there's no funny business with formatting. Plus, that turns this server into a 60TB RaidZ2 box :-D amzn.to/2M4fQuU They're $130 right now, but still a great deal for an enterprise drive.

that 4 pin connector on psu is used for advanced reporting: psu health, voltages, fan status, etc. most server grade boards has connector for these.

Thank you for a great video. I think the heat sinks fins are not aligned with the flow of air. Which is as you mentioned a problem of design of the motherboard.

My question is why not use that neat 4 pin cable on each PSU and put a fan over each of the coolers to cool them down?
@iMadrid11
@iMadrid11 5 лет назад
It’s a server motherboard. Those heatsinks are designed to have cool air blown to it at very high pressure on a rack mount server case. A more suitable solution would be to 3D print a plastic header placed top of the cooler to redirect all of the air from fans. You’ll see those plastic headers commonly on servers from Dell, HP and Lenovo.

I personally dont like a 1U chassis, i prefure a 3U chassis. Istar make some great half depth chassies. I use one of thier d-300 as my personal case, at around $120 for a basic case, but offten on sale so more like $70 i cant complain. (Well, nonstandard power supply requirements are annoying) but 6: 5.25, and 2: 3.5 drive bays that hide behind 2 metalic bezels. Ide say that they are quite interesting looking.

Are the drives backplane(s) sata backwards compatible or only sas? Or is all sas backwards compatible with sata, or is none? I see the Norco rpc-4224 advertises sata and sas comparability, would one need anything special for one or the other or no?!?

Standard SAS backplanes accept SATA disks like Seagate Ironwolf pro and WD Red Pro/Plus. Those are the series that are rated for 12 drives in one chasis, all vibrating and shaking each other.
