I think there are many who are timid to admit they like this album. I’m with you, one of the funnest, coolest and best albums of that time period. I bet the same guys who dismiss it now were jammin to it back then in their rooms. Listened just before this review to this reissue and it sounds awesome. Totally agree. Such a fun fun album. (RIP Michael, you left us too soon but we can relive your great voice still)

Interesting thought: I suspect that you're right about this. I was in my teens / early twenties during the eighties and loved many records that are seen as perhaps a bit 'naff' nowadays... There are some absolute classics from this era.

This Australian is smiling ear to ear to finally have picked this up! And it’s about time some Aussie music is released in this quality!! I’m endlessly frustrated that our music gets rereleased digitally remastered, and so many great artists are just unknown abroad.. Some other Aussie acts I’d love to see get the AAA audiophile treatment are Icehouse, Cold Chisel, Little River Band, Daddy Cool, Men at Work, Split Enz/Crowded House, Divinyls/Chrissy Amphlet, Bee Gees, Midnight Oil, and that 4 letter rock band everyone knows.. maybe even some Mondo Rock or Hunter & Collectors, Australian Crawl? I’m not sure if they were recorded to tape or digitally but I would add Powderfinger to the list. Shabooh Shoobah and The Swing are the other two INXS records I consider must haves.. To Look At You, Don’t Change, Original Sin and Burn for You are all killer. Anyways, love your passionate review for this wonderful recording, it’s hyped my up to spin my copy!

@@DaveDenyer Hi Dave, the only thing i did notice is that the first 2 tracks sound good but by the 3rd track the sound seems to open up quite a lot and from there on in the album sounds incredible. Did you notice that? Could be me as got a new Cartridge and it is still breaking in. I also noticed my pressing had a blue like sheen to it similar to what happens with old PVC sleeves de-gassing onto the vinyl - not sure why that occurred and a slight warp on disc 1. I have an Orb flat but was this one of the vinyl formulations you have tried to fix or was it the mofi vinyl that you said was a no-no? Anyway what a brilliant album - you know back in 1987 The Rolling Stones would have killed for an album as good as this!
@DaveDenyer
@DaveDenyer 18 часов назад
@@ordersredrawwear Hi Ross, I certainly didn't notice this on my copy but haven't gone back to it to check. If there's a sheen I'd suspect it is some sort of manufacturing residue. I have had this on one or two QRP records, (as well as plenty pressed elsewhere). I always clean records when I get them, new or old, the new ones get cleaned precisely to remove any residue such as what this MAY possible be. If it is a pressing residue then that might well result in slightly veiled / murky sound compared with when scrupulously clean. As far as flattening goes, I have not had an issue with Atlantic 75s. The ONLY records I have had problems with in this regard are MOFI Supervinyl and Impex OneSteps (I suspect they are the same formula).

This is THE Atlantic 75 release I’ve been waiting for, had it on pre order since the list was first announced. I’ve got an Abbey Road half speed but this one is just going to utterly destroy it. It’s again one of those bands that i took for granted at the time and it’s only been more recently I’ve really appreciated their genius and a band that recognised the genius of the saxophone without making it cheesy. What an album! The Atlantic 75 just don’t seem to miss, they’ve all been spectacular. Ryan K Smith, Kevin Gray and Chris Bellman just always shoot bullseyes.
@DaveDenyer

TBH I've not heard the Abbey Road cut, but have not been at all impressed with their Half-Speed Mastering process (to put it politely). I do agree: I think this was probably the one I was looking forward to most, even above the Yes and Genesis. It's staggering. I'm even tempted to order another copy as back up.
@SpyderTracks
@SpyderTracks Месяц назад
@@DaveDenyer I’m not a fan of the abbey roads either, I bought a few when I was first getting into collecting as was swayed by them being abbey road and the marketing, but found them all a little lifeless. A backup copy of this is a very good idea actually, may put through an order now!
@SmallPersonRoo

@@DaveDenyer I've been a big fan of Miles' own mastering work. What a lot of people don't know about the Abbey Road Half Speed series is that a lot of the records are only cut by Miles. A lot of labels give him masters already made and ask him to just cut them. When Miles actually does the mastering himself, the results sound fantastic. It's definitely a shame how the labels are ruining his image... Miles was forced to do the Rolling Stones stuff from brickwall limited CD masters..
@DaveDenyer
@DaveDenyer 13 дней назад
@@SmallPersonRoo As I understand it "half speed mastering" is a bit of a misnomer. It really means half speed cutting. Which is something I'm not totally convinced actually provides a benefit... My feelings are purely derived from personal experience. I have several 'Abbey Road' cuts that I simply don't like. The recent (last year?) Sade box set for instance... I see the individual albums are coming out at the moment so I could do a video on those. It would be highly negative. I have the originals of most of them so really only bought the box for the later albums. However the albums of which I also have originals: I much prefer the originals, in fact I would MUCH rather listen to the CDs than the new cuts. In my personal opinion they are horrible. Flat, dull, losing all of the life and spirit of the originals. I very recently bought the new cut of Duran Duran's Rio as it's an album I enjoy and wanted to know what the new version sounds like: similar to the Sade, completely flat, grey and without any of the life of the originals... I could go on and on, and I keep buying new releases, ever hopeful that they'll improve upon the originals (and of course sometimes they do). But it has to be said, from my experience most of what's coming out of Abbey Road, whether cut / mastered by Miles or someone else, is (to my ears) pretty awful.

My AP LP arrived yesterday. I cleaned it this morning. Played it tonight, and it does sound incredible. However, when I compared it to my Miles Showell half speed 45rpm cut, the Abbey Road won out. Much more detail, separation, and low end. The music just pops out on the Miles cut.

Really interesting review Dave, I'm not familiar with this album. Your comments about the sound are really interesting. I have bought copies of Stevie Ray Vaughan over the years and the sound has always been bright / hot / in your face and fatiguing. I bought the 33rpm box set by AP, mastered by Ryan and it is a total revelation. It is what you are saying, the sound is balanced, powerful, musical and draws you in to the music. The guy is a phenomenal mastering engineer.
