Born and raised in Washington, and now joining the EV ranks too! I wish I could have bought an Ionic 5, but it wasn't in the cards, but I am taking delivery soon of a Chevy Bolt EUV! Happy travels

Bolts are great cars. You have enough range to road trip, it's just going to take you a little longer to charge. Welcome to the EV family.

It's great to see you again in good spirits. The movie 'Giant' in the video reminded me of the time when I watched it in high school. I still remember being surprised by how vast 'Riata Ranch' was and James Dean's 'Jetexas Oil Company'. Stay healthy, both of you! from seoul, S.Korea

Thanks Derek. Love the UK. We rented a car in Bath, and drove all over The Cotswolds, The Yorkshire Dales, The Lake District, All the way up to Mallaig in Scotland. Then to Edinburgh, and driving down the coast to London where we returned the car and took the Underground everywhere. I want to go back for another visit someday.

I liked it. It's been forty years since I was last in Van Horn. It looks the same except for the Electrify America chargers. Regarding range and efficiency. Yesterday we drove our Ioniq 5 (SE AWD) from Montrose Colorado to Telluride and back (148 total miles) and saw an overall efficiency of 4.5 miles/kWh. Heat was on. Mountain driving requires slower speed but results in better range. At least some of the hill climbing loss is made up by regen on the downward grades. Anyway I was confident you'd make it to Fort Stockton. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your epic EV journey.

Great to see you back, Dan and Carol. 👍 We are getting ready to head back to Chelan in our EV 6. First leg is from Goodyear, AZ to Kingman. It is only 180 miles but 2,000 foot elevation gain and ABRP says to drive 55 mph with a 100% charge. Seems pretty slow? We have 7,400 miles on car and average 3.9 mi/ kWh. I usually drive at 70 mph to conserve charge.
@evatrics5902
@evatrics5902 Год назад
Interesting. Does the EV6 have more than one size of battery. I just checked and ABRP says that if I start at Goodyear with 100% I could drive 65mph and get to Kingman with 11%. The reverse trip does not limit the speed and arrives with 14%. ABRP is pretty conservative, so you’ll probably do better.
@johnpeehl4133
@johnpeehl4133 Год назад
Thanks Dan, I have a 77.4 kWh battery same as you. ABRP probably said that since I’m conservative and put remaining charge at 20%. Lol. Have you had to use your shell charger in an emergency? I do have a level one. You guys are always welcome to charge up at our Juice Box in Chelan. John Peehl
@evatrics5902
@evatrics5902 Год назад
John, I have never used the Shell Charger, which does both 110v and 240v. I hope that I never need it. I have used the Tesla Tap a few times at Hotels. You never know I might show up in Chelan someday on our way to Kelowna BC. We try to go there once a year with charging stops at Leavenworth and Osoyoos BC if we go that way. Sometimes we go north and then west.

Hey guys, great to see a new adventure posted! I had no idea of that part of Texas. Looks vast and desolate. Had to have been really cool going thru all those small towns in an EV when there aren't many electric vehicles around that part of the country.

It was a fun trip. We have been many places where we don't see many EVs. Once you get the feel for your car, you learn to trust it's range.Thanks for watching.

Howdy from Texas! We also own an Ioniq 5 SE trim, and you stated that you were getting an efficiency of 3.1 @ 80 mph, and I guess with a strong head wind. Have you determined as a rule of thumb on strictly hiway driving what eff's you get at the different speeds? such as 70 mph, 65 mph and 80 mph? I will be going to Savanah Ga in a couple of months from Houston, and wonder what eff's I could likely expect. Thank you for continuing to upload these videos for your trip last year.
@evatrics5902
@evatrics5902 Год назад
I have not really mapped out the efficiency. As you can see in the video, I use A Better Route Planner to plan charging stops. In the paid version of A Better Route Planner, you can turn on real time weather and it will add that info into your route planning. If you use Electrify America for charging, you'll find that there will be a stop around every 180 miles and the next one is more or less out of range. That's pretty easy to get to no matter how fast you're driving. If you have a 30 mph head wind, the GOM will let know that you have to stop at the charger before it. On the Highway the GOM "Guess-O-Meter" is pretty accurate, especially at the bottom end. It's really not very stressful. I also, use the Windy App. It will give you forecasted winds on your route. You're going to have a great trip.

This video was 2 years ago. Early days. This car has now been to 48 states and 6 Canadian provinces. I have already owned a Hybrid. They just have twice as many systems to go wrong and still have a check engine light. Hybrids according to the insurance institute are 3 times more likely to catch on fire than a full EV. Even more likely than a gas vehicle. in 57,000 mile we have had zero issues with a car and zero oil changes and we have never run out of juice. Not even in Fargo. I'll push this car before I ever go back to gas,

I live in Colorado and have a similar Ionic5 to you. I have really enjoyed your videos. I am planning some massive road trips. Did you complete the trip to Florida? I am especially interested in the gulf coast segments. Thanks again.

Yes, we did finish the trip and 2 more cross country trips, one of which was across the trans-Canada hwy. On this trip we did interstate 10 all the way through Texas, finally dropping down the east coast of Florida across the Everglades and down to Key West. As long as you plan your charging stops, it is absolutely no problem. If you’re using A Better Route Planner, I would set it up for more frequent but shorter charging stops. Also, before you set out to the next charging stop, take a look at that stop in the PlugShare app, just to make sure that it’s in good working order. That way you’ll be able to plan an alternate stop if you need it. If you can travel on week days, that way you’ll probably never see a line to the chargers. The next part of this trip is on my editor, I’m just struggling a bit with it.

May I ask if you've encountered any rattles or warranty fixes over your ownership now? I remember watching the early road trip videos here and now its finally my turn to decide to take delivery of the Ioniq 5 or Model Y
@evatrics5902
@evatrics5902 Год назад
One of the problems with EV’s is that if something is rattling you hear it. We have 33,775 miles on our car with zero rattles. You just have to remember to make sure the rear seatbelt are turned the right way when they are not in use, if not they rattle against the back door. If no one ever sits on the back seat you’re golden. Sometimes if someone has just gotten out of the back seat I have to pull over and fix the way the seat belt is stored.

@@evatrics5902 Just have to plan well. Especially in the desert heat. In some cases you never know what may be working or not. While the infrastructure is slowing coming along, we are still years out before it being a convivence
@evatrics5902

@@greenghopper Most EV owners charge at home and never venture out of the city, preferring air travel to road trips. For them, having an EV is super convenient. Charging every night in the garage. We have road tripped our Ioniq 5 across North America twice. Once traveling west to east across Canada on the Trans Canada Highway. We were never stranded by non working fast chargers. I think we may have waited in line for a charger once on a weekend. Occasionally a charger was putting out less power than optimal, but never ever during any of these trips have I thought, I wish I was filling up my RAV4 Prime at a Shell Station.
@greenghopper
@greenghopper Год назад
@@evatrics5902 That's good to know. If we purchased one, it primarily would be for home to work driving and running errands on the weekend. With a kid and two dogs, we need a larger vehicle for longer trips.
