The Hawkeyes managed 580 yards total offense while allowing Iowa State only 125 yards, including a total of -11 yards rushing.
After two Rob Houghtlin FGs, Mark Vlasic found Jim Mauro for a 43-yard TD pass. Mauro is a former walk-on, who was filling in for the injured Quinn Early. Iowa took a 26-0 halftime lead after a trick play. WR Robert Smith took a handoff from RB Rick Bayless, and then threw the first touchdown pass of his collegiate career as he hit a wide open Mauro for a TD. Mauro later in the game caught his third touchdown pass, on a 47-yard reception, tying an Iowa school record held by four other players. He ended the game with 5 catches for 149 yards and 3 TDs.
The victory made Hayden Fry the winningest football coach in school history (53-30-1 in his 8th season).
