As a student with the iPad Air 4 and having used a lot of friends’ iPad pros, I think the air is a much better deal. I love the Touch ID because I usually open my iPad while it’s laying flat on my desk or lap (which might not detect my face right away). Also, using it pretty much only for note taking and reading, I never use the speakers, and the refresh rate has never bothered me bc I don’t watch videos or anything. For students, I think the money saved is so much more worth it to put into other things!
Well it still depends tho. There are students who love drawing and editing videos. Others are replacing their laptops with ipad so for me pro is a better deal. I was able to use the ipad air of my friend and i just dont feel it. I can see the difference why ipad pro is called “pro” lol
Some of the reviews for this don't make sense. This ru-vid.comUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA works as well as any power strip I've used. Plug in what you need, be sensible about it & keep it movin' The construction is plastic but it's a sturdy piece. It has a single toggle switch & the swivel jacks are useful as well. Plugged in next to Tripp Lite Isobar takes some of these reviews with a pinch of sumthin' - does what it says & functions properly.Had for about a month. Perfect no complaints will update if anything changes.
Thank you for this in depth comparison, you did a great job! I purchased the new iPad Air 5 (256gb) after stacking it up against the pro's. In regards to Apple, of course if you spend a couple extra hundred dollars you're going to get a more superior product such as the iPad Pro. Spend a few more and you can get an iMac and etc. I was really leaning towards the Pro but reading reviews and doing my own research, it's really geared for people who would utilize all that extra power for their careers, future careers and enthusiast hobbies. I didn't want a laptop, I wanted a tablet for tablet things. I looked at several laptops, Android tablets and all of Apple's iPads. The Air 4 fit my lifestyle. Great gaming, reading, researching, media hub, viewing, etc. Then they announced the new M1 chip for the Air 5 and I preordered that following Friday. I have the 13 Pro Max iPhone with the 120htz refresh display but I honestly rarely touch my iPhone that cost over double than the Air 5, the Air 5 display is great, even after using both the iPhone and iPad simultaneously. It's not as big a deal TO ME as what Max Tech makes it out to be. But that is also his experience and his opinion. I was blown away by the speaker comparison in this video but I never had an issue or thought these to be dull or nonsuperior speakers before watching this video. I've watched many things and FaceTime'd many people and never had any thought as to the quality of the speakers in the Air 5, they're great. Again, if we are always comparing our devices to the next greatest thing, no one would be happy. I just wanted to share my thoughts on the Air 5 to those who may be regretting or basing their future buying options based on this video. Just remember, Apple is always going to come out which new improved gadgets that will out date the ones they JUST released. No one stays on top for long as far as having the best devices unless you can truly afford it.
Very well said. I'm also torn between the pro and the Air 5. I still am torn between the two, actually. I'm looking forward to using the iPad for 4 years (note taking and such for college). So I would badly need the memory considering that applications are getting larger in size.
I owned a 2018 iPad Pro. It was still in great shape and supported by Apple. I knew I wanted to upgrade and waited to see what the change to the iPad Air would bring. I agree with your video assessment. The 11-inch iPad pro was the best choice for me. I already was used to four speakers and great sound. I could not see going backwards.
@@AndrewC89 Obviously 😃, then people won't buy the 12.9 inch one. But yeah, may be they will push the mini LED to the 11 inch pro this year, the same way they pushed the M1 chip to the air.
In Quebec, the difference we get is almost 300$ when including the taxes, making the pro not necessarily a better deal. Depending of the market, you may want to avoid that 25% price gap.
I'm in desperate need for a new iPad and oddly enough this new upgrade to the iPad Air 5 I believe was a clever ploy from Apple to push me into buying an iPad Pro. I was always interested in an iPad Pro but didn't think I should drop $800 on an iPad but when you compare the differences between the new iPad Air and the iPad Pro (considering that you HAVE to upgrade the internal storage of 64GB and there's no 128GB version so the price goes up $150 for 256GB) it feels like the best choice is EASILY to spend the extra 50 bucks on the Pro which has a better screen and better speakers which are two of the big things that I'll be directly interfacing with.
Check MKBHD's review on the iPad Air if you haven't already. He explains pricing strategies etc very well. That clever ploy you suspect is very deliberate indeed.. :)
I actually purchased the iPad Pro 11" five days ago. I was stuck between the Air and the Pro for about a month. However, I can say, that if you are the type of person who values higher refresh rates, get the Pro. It makes such a massive difference, to the point where the iPad Pro 2018 with its A12X chip feels faster than the iPad Air solely due to ProMotion. The speakers are nice too, but after buying a 14" MBP in January and getting used to ProMotion, I can say that the lack ProMotion was the dealbreaker for me with the iPad Air.
Watching this on the Pro 12.9” - very much worth it. Air is nice but when you actually use it after time with the pro, you notice everything the Air lacks.
And yes, I have multiple 120 Hz devices: 13 Pro, MBP 6, iPad Pro 12.9. The only time I really stare at the screen is when I’m watching content or inspecting/editing photos and refresh rate doesn’t matter.
@@XVNRX I agree. Im a college student and I also make 4K drone content. I use my M1 iPad Pro for both of these. If I didn’t make content and just used it for school I don’t see why I wouldn’t get an iPad Air. Maybe the only difference I would notice is promotion. I don’t care for promotion usually but when I’m taking notes it makes a huge difference.
Exactly. Apple out here making me try to decide between the new air and the pro. Then I remember that I only use my ipad for watching RU-vid videos and my current 3 year old $300 base ipad is still holding up just fine lmao
The iPad Air is like a Toyota Camry, it's definitely not the most exciting or innovative piece of hardware but it's super reliable and will get you through your day with no problems it's pretty fast too
@@williamgray9692 for $778 you can get the cheapest Air and the Smart Keyboard Folio, or for $799 you could get the cheapest Pro. Seems like a better value for an iPad + case for less than the cost of the Pro.
@@Gzilla313 that’s the beauty of this. What you think is better value is not what I think is the better value. But we can both agree you will probably be happy with either purchase.
I also own a 13 pro max and air 5 but i never faced any huge difference in the experience with the promotion display. Surprisingly 60hz on air 5 is great.
I do not get why people obsess over ProMotion that much, sure for gaming it is nice, but in a regular day to day use there is so little difference. And I have gotten very used to high refresh rate displays, have been using a 144Hz display daily for the last 6 years for work/private stuff and also a 13 Pro Max ever since its release. Tried the Air 5 side by side with a 11" Pro in a store yesterday and at no point did the Air look or feel choppy while scrolling through the home screen or web pages. I'd still pick the Pro over the Air for the following reasons: - prefer Face ID over Touch ID - quad speakers are great for watching movies or shows - Thunderbolt compatible USB-C port Also 128GB storage is all I need, so with the air I would have to spend 150$ "more" for storage that I just do not need, especially since there are some stores where the 11" Pro 128GB is cheaper than the 256GB Air 5.
Ik, because if u want to upgrade to the 256GB iPad Air, its also +$150, however, on the iPad Pro, you not only get double the storage but so much other more freedom as well
@@Xterminated01 2020 iPad Pro is gonna feel better than the iPad Air because of pro motion and you’ll get it for around $600 vs the $729 for the new 2021 iPad pro
@@andrewswan3008 yo bro i was about to buy 2020 ipad pro but it is refurb and cost only 620 dollars. What do you think is it a steal? Or the apple certified refurb is a big problem?
Yesterday (Cyber Monday) I dropped my 3rd Gen iPad Pro on its face and the screen shattered. I couldn't justify buying another since I'm don't use all of its features so I went with the 5th Gen Air 256GB for $712 with 2yrs Applecare+ and I'm hoping I don't regret my choice. Thanks for the comparison!
In January I bought the iPad Pro 11inch 256GB. It’s the best Tablet I ever had. I love it’s great performance. I can’t imagine ever buying an iPad other than the Pro.
Ended up getting Air 5 256Gb since I'm fine without those differences and also because I am getting a Mac Mini because my PC keeps freezing on me which makes me unable to get any work done. So I may get an ipad pro in future but it's unlikely since I'm not going to be using as a professional. And it'll be perfect for me till it becomes obsolete.
i think for me ill go with pro since im going to have my 1st ipad why not go with pro hehe i often like to watch movies, anime, netflix and sometimes play games on it so the speaker is important to me
Last year's Black Friday I bought the 11 inch 128gb Ipad Pro 2021 3rd generation. The 120hz with the M1 chip made playing games such as Wild Rift and CODM so much more enjoyable. For gaming purposes, the 60hz Air compared to the 120hz Pro definitely is in favor of the pro. For casual use, go with the air
I bought these two last week and start using both for about a week now. Key takeaway: Pro Res is not that big an issue, at least for most of ppl, you won’t really feel that big a difference. Speaker is not an big issue if you are like me putting on my AirPods all the time. Storage: if you are a light user and have iCloud, then 64GB is more than enough. The only thing that could really matter is the Touch ID vs Face ID. All in all, if you are a light user, air is good enough (pretty sure you can get a brand new one for at least 50$ off in a month or two) if you consider yourself a even slightly pro user, go for the pro if you have the buck
Great video, the one thing you missed in your external drive speed test. Just because you have 10 or 40gbps on the usb C doesn’t mean your drive can do that. Should reference the advertised transfer speed of the drive. If the drive is just a standard SSD it might be maxed at 4gbps so wouldn’t matter on each, even a “thunderbolt compatible” drive doesn’t mean it’s read/write is 40gbps.
I would take 2018 or 2020 iPad Pro with the 12X or 12Z chip instead of the iPad Air with the M1 chip for even cheaper than $599, the 120HZ Promotion display alone its a reason not the get the 2022 Air.
Thank you so much, finally..after watching a few comparison videos, this is the best video that dragged me to a conclusion to choose the ipad pro based on my needs
You did a great comparison video but I’m cracking up at the thought of someone bustin out some dance or heavy beats tunes… Don’t pretend you don’t have at least 5 Bluetooth speakers at your place alone LOL
Let’s also not pretend we are goin to be using our pros to film something 🤣 ok well wait some digital creators and such certainly will, but most MOST ppl are just going to grab their iPhone. And if u have the Pro, u also will 100% have the best iPhone hahah
I upgraded from a 2017 iPad Pro to the iPad Air, I will miss having the 4 speakers, but I never really noticed 120hz on my iPad Pro so that’s not a deal breaker for me
strangely, I love the touch ID on the ipad air and Ipad mini. It never failed to recognize my finger, while the face ID can't do the job with face mask on.
Woah really?can you elaborate more on that? I'm torn between ipad air 5 and ipad pro 11,I watched a youtuber comparing battery and ipad air 5 drains more that ipad pro 11
Ipad pro 11 has 1668x2388 while the ipad air 5 has 1640x 2360. That is a very small difference in resolution to have marginal difference in battery life. Besides the pro can downlock its display below 60Hz refresh rate unlike the air.
Thank you for the review. I am a motorcycle vloger, I currently edit videos on a regular iPad 9 64gig with a lighting port using luminafusion, everything works well, except the 64gig limitation. So, for me, the iPad Air 5 256GB at $680 is the perfect solution, I will get an upgrade in transfer speed, more versitile USB C port, and most important, I will be getting 256GB of storage for editing. I use headphones and bluetooth speakers, so I don't care for the better speakers on the PRO, the faster transfer speed on the pro will be nice but not worth $300, the higher refresh rate on the pro would also be nice, but I have never own a device with high refresh rate so it is not a big issue for me. All in all, I think the for $680, the iPad air 5 is the most practical solution for most regular joes like me, who are not professional, but still want the ability to create content.
Actually I found the iPad Pro 11 128gig on sale locally so I jumped on it and to be honest, it did not wow me. It is definitely snappy, but the screen is dull lacks contrast, the speakers have a smile face equalizer so they are great for music but not for news or audio books, when compared side by side with my iPad 9, the image quality has no different, the iPad 9 shows a bit more contrast so it has a more punchy appearance and looks a bit shaper. At this point you can get both the iPad Air 5 256gig or the iPad pro 11 128gig both for the same price, about $780 from Amazon, and although I haven't seen or used the iPad 5, I think it is a better value because of the larger storage on board. Nothing wrong with the iPad Pro, it just doesn't do enough to wow me, it doesn't have enough to differentiate from the others where it matters, so why even bother. Having said that, I don't like to return goods just because if there is nothing defective about it, it is a waste and harm the environment, alot of clean water and good raw materials went into making that product and bringing it to my local town all the way from China or wherever it was manufactured, so I have to respect that, I made my choice and I need to stick with it.
Thanks for the comparison and the differences are real, but our needs make the iPad Air 5 a bargain - I bought 2 and we are very happy with our choice.
I would love the air to not have a camera bump or even don't have a backside camera at all. I don't know how other people are using tablets, but I can count on one finger how often I used the backside camera. Protecting my device with a chunky case is somehow not an option but a must with this bump since its inconvenient to lay it flat on the table ... Actually, id even rather had them to make the iPad thicker than keeping this bump which is driving me crazy on every phone and tablet ... I'm just waiting for them to carve spots out on the trackpad to fit the upcoming front-facing-camera-bump on laptops
the biggest surprise for me was the microphone! what a stark difference. if people do any recording, that could be a huge difference. Sure, with speakers and mic you could use external, but you're likely not always going to have to have those with you. the ipad pro can do a great job in of itself.... very impressive.
Thanks - this confirms what I based my decision to go with the ipad pro - Actually the price difference was only $130 for both with 256G memory which what I wanted. In addition I am getting the iad pro on Monday from Amazon instead of waiting to sometime in April. from both Apple and Amazon. The 4th selling point is the face id which is a big convience deal since I have it on my iPhone 13 mini. Just a more polished and smoother machine for someone like me who plans to use it for work including video editing.
I think the lag is more obvious on video, but some people are more sensitive than others. But people that use it more may also need that boost. I got the 11 pro but I got it from a super discount. $599.
Remove the camera entirely, who uses an Ipad camera? Tablets shouldn't be having cameras, it's such a major aesthetic blunder. Have you ever seen large bumps at the back of the laptop having cameras, who started this shit altogether? Plus everybody owns a phone and has a tablet, they can always take a picture using a phone and transfer whenever needed, just have a frontend cam for video calling. Add a soft-tip option for the pencil. All in one package at 999$ and it will sell like hot cakes. A major reason for 12.9 inch Ipad pro selling is digital note-taking, otherwise, everybody will be ok with Air 5.
I don’t know bud. I’ve got a real world scenario for you. I use my iPads for entertainment and for business. I had an iPad air 4 that I upgraded to an iPad Pro 11 inch. I bought the same cases for each because I always buy the same case, spigen. Well I went on a business trip and accidentally grabbed my air four instead of the pro 11 and went out of state for a week on business. I did not know that I was using the air four and not the I pad 11 Pro the entire time. The images are identical. I got home and when I realized what I had done I took the 11 Pro back to Apple. There’s just no sense in spending that kind of money for a new device that my old device did just perfectly. That’s my real world experience. Notice I said air 4. Not air 5.
i NEVER use my ipad for photos, and the only ones on it are taken from my iphone 12 pro. I also only use my ipad for web browsing and tvshows and movies while cleaning around the house. so for me the Ipad air 5 64gb was a no brainer for me (especially coming from the ipad 7th gen)
Yes, I think I'd go Pro, for sure. What I really want is the tech to connect an iPad to a regular monitor and not be stuck with the 4x3 aspect ratio. Not sure how that would work... maybe a setting that allows the external monitor to be the "main" monitor at the good aspect ratio, and add the black bars to the iPad.
Trust me, no. You can connect an additional monitor to the ipad, but doing so does barely more than mirroring your ipad screen and also doesn't fill the entire monitor if you're getting it for that, you better leave it or buy an imac/macbook instead
I had the 1st gen iPad Pro 11 and now I got the air 5. Pro was better but not by a whole lot . I miss the extra speakers and promotion a lot but while writing I don’t feel much of a difference . Not bad I guess
I have iPad Pro 11 inch love using I recommend buying it if you love playing if your student then iPad Air 5 enough bc if your students u just need do notes and not performance or just buy the mini (correct me if I’m wrong)
As an audio engineer, the microphone(s) quality between the two are different but to say the Pro has better quality is dependent on the source being targeted. The iPad Pros more low-end warmth compared to the Air 5 doesn't mean "better". Beats headphones have more low-end but that also the attribute of cheap speakers in general and that's why you don't see those fashionable headphones in any respected music studio and they gather dust at music stores like Guitar Center.
it was a night and day difference and the pro was clearly better. someone could easily make some singing or maybe acoustic set with the built-in mic. obviously one would use an audio interface and nice mic given the choice, but the pro could do in a pinch. especially since people aren't likely to carry around an interface and mic.
Another point to make is: the m2 chip iPad Pro could come out sometime this year and I really don’t think it is a good time to buy iPad Pro. With those potential upgrades in chip, displays and etc, worth waiting for another few months for the new pro
While that may be true, the 2018 iPad pro or Air 4th gen works as good as the new m1 ipad pro, even in power apps like video editing. The new chips benchmark faster, but then in the real world there's almost no performance difference. Speakers and displays are already outstanding on iPad Pros. So I suspect the new m2 chip comes out, benchmarks great, and then real world experience is still about the same. No real reason to fear a new launch when Apple is already giving us more hardware than iPadOS can use. Especially if you get one on sale.
There is no point in waiting. M1 is already overkill for a tablet. iPad OS is not a replacement for Mac OS and probably never will be. iPad OS is already very limited. Slapping an M2 in it doesn’t make it anymore capable of doing anything new that M1 on a tablet already can’t do. The problem is iPad OS, it is too limited. There would need to be a massive rework of iPad OS or finally putting Mac OS on it to make it actually possible to make use of the M-series (which is a COMPUTER chip)
Why does almost nobody mention ... same price for Pro 128 GB vs Air 256 GB ? After 9 years I had to upgrade my iPad Air 1st Gen and honestly... this was a pretty simple decision. I have an iPhone with 256 GB and I put EVERYTHING I got on there.. and that is pretty much exactly 128 GB. So yeah... ProMotion/120 Hz/brighter Display/better Speaker or additional 128 GB storage? I chose the first, easily...
Under normal circumstances I would have more than happy to pay that 150 dollar but in my country(INDIA) even the base IPad Pro costs like 1200 dollars where as the base iPad Air costs around 730 dollars, you can see the difference right? And due to my by budget I was forced to go with iPad Air even though I wanted to opt for an iPad Pro 😔
Great review! When I was shopping for an I pad two months ago, I had no idea what the differences were. The people at the store couldn’t tell me either. It’s a bummer your video didn’t exist before I bought it. I may have still chosen the IPad Air tho. That’s what I ended up getting. It functions fine for what I need it for. I do notice the scroll lag a bit but I really didn’t know there was a lag until after watching this video. Thank you for the great review tho.
I think that Apple is currently lost defining the role of the Ipad air so they released this one just as a bait to buy the 11” IPad Pro. They knew very well that for most people 64GB is not enough in a $600 tablet and 128GB is the sweet spot. So for just $50 more….
Great video! One day reviewers will stop saying item A has Thunderbolt and item B has USB C! USB C is a physical connection standard. The Thunderbolt port is also USB C. What is more important is what USB standard the slower iPad Air uses...USB 3.0 ...3.2 Gen 1 Gen 2? I know this always happens because the USB standards are so convoluted but USB C is a physical standard and I realize you guys know that :) Just needed to vent. Thanks!
I have the IPad Pro 12.9 with the mini LED.. and I don’t think I can ever go back to a non 120 hz display. The speakers alone is a big selling point for me. They’re loud and have bass.
Got the pro for school stuff. Really wanted to settle for the Air but 64 is too little storage just for the apps I need in my context. The base Pro + external / cloud storage is the sweet spot and i think it is a bit more future proof. Thanks for the great videos.
I use the pitaka magnetic back cover. Makes camera lens look fitted. Also able to take it out of the magic keyboard gives it more grip. Use Bluetooth no need for 4 speakers nor microphones. Nor camera flash. Better Blue 8GB of RAM, 5G 256GB.
I know everyoe gets caught up on the specs and the speed but I’m willing to bet more consumers/retail customers watch your channel than Pros/prosumers. You should try approaching some videos from that angle instead of less powerful less this less that….. 599 is way better than 749-999
I currently have the 2018 iPad Pro, even now, it's a fabulous device.. it was way ahead of its time, the 120hz, 4 speakers, a12x still holds up pretty well! ,Face id ,and the most amazing thing is flashlight which none of the air has..If you guys need the ultimate experience no doubt go for the pro..If you find the refurbished one Pro on the price of air, blindly go for the Pro its far more great experience than this Air.. (Its my opinion).
Exactly. You can get the 2020 iPad pro refurbished from apple for 9 dollars more than the air. And the 256GB air option is the same price as the 2021 11 inch pro from amazon. Either way you get a better product
I just bought the iPad pro instead of the air. The promotion, 2 extra speakers and extra 64gb storage compared to the base air is way way way worth it for the 200$ jump (10,000PHP here in th Philippines) I hope the pro 4 doesn’t come too early this year 🤣
I’ve seen a lot of these review videos regarding pro motion. The thing is, if you can only tell the difference under slow motion, then it is not that big a deal. Period. Sure if you have an iPhone 13 pro and use it everyday, you may notice some difference switching between air and phone, but honestly, after a week’s usage, I really cannot tell that big a difference. Pro motion is something great to have, not MUST to have for most ppl
That's an amazing video bro! I've a query. In 2022, Is it worth paying extra for iPad pro "5th" gen over iPad pro "3rd" gen? Looking forward for your response. 🥂
Having the 256gb 11 inch M1 iPad Pro since May of last year and still loving it so far. I recently visited an apple store and they had the new M1 iPad Air on exhibition hooked to a Magic Keyboard. I tried it because I own the keyboard and in my case I really noticed the lack of ProMotion making it feel much slower on daily and normal use. If you have tried a 120 hz panel in the past or you currently use one on any device (phone, tablet or pc) the iPad Air would feel much slower even on regular use and interaction with the OS.
I'm gonna disagree a bit. But this just proves that not everyone can tell or is willing enough to check the difference. For others, 120hz display may matter and that's nothing against anyone. I forced my phone to be at 60hz since it drains battery fast. My tab though, I kept at 120hz since it has a better battery. I did notice the difference a bit but it didn't bother me enough.
@Benjamin Martin it has. The only thing that the 11inch lacks between 12.9inch is the mini-led display with crazy hdr brightness and color accuracy. But both of them have the 120 hz display which is noticeable in regular and intensive use.
Super duper useful video, I have compared between air and pro for all week and this clip help me out! I choose iPad Pro because the 120 ProMotion look smoother than 60 like my iPhone 14 Pro🎉
The power issues with Thunderbolt and external drives was super annoying, and I spent time trying to resolve it. I finally called Apple, and it referred me to a blurb in its iPad users guide that it recommends that bus-powered external drives be attached to powered hubs, while drives with power ports use adapters to plug into the wall. Afterwards, this issue was diminished. Try that and see if it works for you. I am otherwise really happy with my M1 iPad Pro 11” for the reasons you pointed out, but it’s the portability that sold me. That said, I think there are cases where the new Air is better for others, but it really should have a base storage bump to at least 128GB instead of the paltry 64GB. Anyway, thanks again!
the 128 gb versions are practically the same price you should have said this in your video i think i will got with the ipad pro for my first ipad the extra stuff i get for a 30 eu gap is just staggering
I agree with your assessment especially regarding the quality of the sound, something that many other reviewers gloss over or miss entirely. Even the side by side comparisons on the Apple site relegate the speaker differences to way down the page. When I bought my iPad Pro (10.5”) almost 5 years ago, the feature that I was most excited about was Pro Motion. Pro Motion is great but the feature that blew me away was the sound. I could not believe the quality and volume that the 4 speakers provide - it improved watching and listening to videos immensely. I want to upgrade my iPad Pro especially for the mini LED display but the 12.9” form factor is too big for me and it looks like Apple do not intend to offer this better screen to the 11” model any time soon. Apparently the 12.9” is selling very well. Accordingly, I will hold off upgrading.
I think probably 9/10 people just use headphones these days, so it may not matter. But yes, I enjoy the great sound out of my iPad Pro when I put the headphones away.
Yes, that $150 over say the 3 years you may keep the iPad before upgrading will cost you $4.16 an month. 120hz alone is worth that. They should’ve tried to make the Air cheaper and not used the M1. It’ll make it a more attractive buy as people wanting that $360 iPad May just think I’ll go with the air as it’s significantly better for not that much more.
If you really want to get a budget iPad but with good features: just get the iPad Pro 11-inch 2018 model. This one has Promotion & FaceID. I have no need for the special cameras. My iPad has the 2nd gen apple pencil support. And the Apple chip is still extremely strong for the media consumption that I use it for.
