Once again, we see that ACTUAL ARTISTS don't seem to think 120hz makes a difference when drawing even though so many mainstream reviewers suggest that 120hz somehow provides an advantage for art. I don't have anything against a faster refresh rate (it looks nicer when scrolling); but it's annoying when so many professionals clearly don't know what they're talking about and tell aspiring artists that they should pay more for this feature. I've tried both side by side and couldn't detect any difference when drawing. It's not a video-game after all. Seriously, how many extra strokes do they think they're going to be able to make in 1/120th of a second compared to 1/60th? Unless you're The Flash, I don't see why 120hz vs 60hz should matter when choosing an art tool.
@maverickpoker7131
@maverickpoker7131 3 года назад
I definitely wouldn't say it's an advantage, But it is noticeable. Especially if you use it for more than just drawing

That flash reference made me chuckle plus the Apple Pencil feature makes a difference in not breaking it accidentally
@BeierFilms
@BeierFilms 3 года назад
@@chronictown4330 Ok, explain to me how it "adds up." Your hand and the apps move at the same speed in 60 hz vs 120hz. A drawing does not go twice as fast with a 2x faster refresh rate. If you were to watch "The Hobbit" films at 48 fps, it wouldn't be faster than watching them at 24fps. The difference is the smoothness of the animation. Professional pen displays (like the Cintiq Pro) cost thousands of dollars and they are still 60hz yet somehow they're the industry standard. I know quite a few people on the pro level and I've never heard one say, "60hz is really slowing me down; I should get an iPad Pro!" Seriously, a company like Wacom would be more than happy to charge extra for a 120hz display if professional designers thought it would make a difference. Gamers may notice a difference because games require split second reflexes when you push a button in reaction to what's happening on screen. But that's not how drawing works (at least the way I do it). Having a line update at 1/60th of a second (rather than 1/120th), is not going to alter the course of the line or how fast you draw (at least as far as I can see). The only time I've experienced real lag that actually "slows" down a stroke is when I'm using some gigantic brush that bogs down the CPU (and that will happen on every system, including the iPad Pro). In fact, as is my understanding, such a thing is actually less likely to happen on an iPad Air 4 because it actually has higher single core performance which has more of an effect on the brush engine. I also wonder if you've actually tried alternating these 10-hour-days between a 60hz iPad Air 4 and a 120hz iPad Pro (10.9/11 inch models to keep it fair). I'd be very surprised to see that the different refresh rate somehow slowed you down. But I'd be super eager to see such an experiment and I'd certainly keep an open mind if you prove me wrong. I just think all this focus on the refresh rate is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how the technology works as well as the fact it looks smoother so we think it's more responsive. But if you can give me some empirical data to show I'm wrong, I will happily beg your pardon.
@BeierFilms
@BeierFilms 3 года назад
@@maverickpoker7131 Of course, but I'm not denying that it's noticeable. I'm simply saying that the extra smoothness is something which is cosmetic rather than functional. The line will look smoother as will things like scrolling. It's a nice luxury and that's fine but I dislike that so many non-artists reviewers are essentially trying to upsell people on the pricier device by suggesting that the refresh rate will actually impact how you draw with the Apple Pencil. Once again, it's all about what job you want to use a given tool for. If you're buying an iPad for gaming have a lot of games that can actually run at 120fps, then by all means get the iPad Pro (though I'd actually suggest a real gaming rig is a better choice). If if you just think the extra smoothness is cool and worth an extra $200 then go for it. But it's not going to change your art and younger artists as well as people who are less technically informed are often mistakenly lead to believe that more affordable tools will somehow limit them.
@geneoakley

@@BeierFilms I think the 60Hz display will only be a minor gripe ONLY if one is so used to 120Hz. Remember that 120Hz display was implimented since 2017 iPad Pros, and many of their owners(including myself) are looking for suitable upgrade candidates now. But of course, you brought an interesting point about Wacom's industry standard tablet displays still on 60Hz. Also, real professionals should have no problems transitioning back to 60Hz because that's the refresh rate most of their tools have had their entire life. Maybe those 'reviewers' who claimed that 120Hz display is better for artists, were simply parroting talking points from Apple's marketing team. After all, iPad Air actually having competent professional use prospects would cannibalize market share from their own iPad Pro lineup which was their main 'for pros' go-to. Of course, iPad Pro also has 2GB more RAM, but I have learned to merge layers as I go along, so even though i draw on 8000px size canvas, layers werent that much a problem with me.

Really having a hard time deciding between an iPad Air (4) 64gb with the magic keyboard and pencil or the new Pro 11” and wait/save for the extras. Wait for it to ship and wait for the pencil and keyboard as I save for a few months to get those accessories. Or get the 64 air. My budget is tight, but I’ll get the education discount. The difference between the 256 air and 128 pro is like $50. But the 64 air would give me room for those necessary accessories and no waiting. I sold my MacBook Air laptop to make this happen. I have a desktop iMac I rarely use. Main use for iPad will be writing papers, web browsing, email, bit of zoom, media consumption and streaming, reading, editing photos, note taking and light drawing. Playing some games. It will be my first iPad in many years and I’m really excited. What would you do? Is 64gb enough?

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the veteran/professional artists' dismissal of the 120Hz display. People who love to draw/paint digitally can appreciate the small difference, that's what separates pros/vets and beginners/experimenters when it comes to the choice of tools- they know the "disadvantage" of the lesser tool isn't going to hinder the growth process of beginners. It's a luxury that isn't needed, but that doesn't mean it isn't welcomed by those who can appreciate/afford it.

Hello James. Loved your video! I just had a doubt. Could you recommend me which one I should go for the 256 GB iPad air 4 Vs M1 iPad pro 256 GB. It's 150$ difference. I'm a medical student. I want to take notes, watch videos. I also draw, so I'd like to do art. My main requirements are a good storage, battery life, pencil usability since I'll write lots of notes. I want to make the device last really long like 7-8 years at least, cuz this will be my first iPad. Since the pro has the flash, useful for taking pics of docs, ultra wide camera, better speakers, 120hz, promotion, relatively better adjusted battery life, should I really spend that extra bit and go for pro or will the air suffice, and sustain for a long time. Actually the 256 GB air is already a bit over my budget. Is it better to buy a 64gigs and use it a couple of years then upgrade again or should I make a long term investment and buy a higher end product? Please reply
@konan8353
@konan8353 3 года назад
I believe the M1 is the same gen as the iPad air 4, so in terms of lifespan they'll be supported for an equal amount of time if I had to guess. Nothing you've mentioned is a deal-breaker as for your medical school studies, features such as the 120hz screen are very nice to use, especially if you're familiar with high refresh rate monitors, but they provide no actual benefit, and unless you're acclimatised to them you'll probably forget about the 60hz screen soon enough (it also detects input at 120hz so it's rather smooth for a 60hz display. A good inbetween option is the iPad Pro 2020 11", as it's essentially the iPad Air 4 with the extra features and will be priced roughly inbetween the two. The only reason I'd maybe recommend the M1 iPad or the iPad Pro 2020 12.9" is because you mentioned art. If you're serious about art, then bigger screen can be a plus for some, but in all honesty you don't need it if you don't want to buy it. I just purchased an iPad myself and was asking around within art communities and the consensus was that it doesn't matter, some were even working on much older iPads from 2018 and were being paid for their work. If you have the cash to spare and can afford to spend a little extra get a bigger iPad, if not then buy the iPad Air 4, or the iPad Pro 2020 11" if you really want the faster refresh rate.

I REALLY wanted the ipad pro but I couldn't wait a month from now to earn more money, so bought the ipad air 4 (256 gb) instead. Im gonna say it right now, procreate works perfectly. It's fast & smooth. I can't see what people mean by 120 hZ bLaH BlAh bLaH. Then again I've never owned an apple product before. All I know is that maybe people are making it a bigger deal than what it really is.

Thank you so much for this comment. I was confused between the air and the pro and I'm buying it for the sole purpose of digital art using Procreate. This 120 hz is what was making it difficult to choose but if 60 Hz is still smooth and nice using Procreate then the iPad air 4 with 256 GB seems like the best option for my budget and there are really good color options too.

I have been watching a ton of artist comparisons between these two ipads and the deciding factor for me is how the RAM affects the layer capacity of procreate. It seems air, based on the other reviews, offers less layers in some pixel sizes on air? I am new-ish to procreate/digital art but I have been designing posters and larger prints and I dont want to be too limited in being able to print these at a good resolution. Any advice?

I am on the same boat. I have been watching these artist comparisons to answer that question, since I also want to use procreate for large posters and printed canvases. I think that 6gb of ram probably does mean more layers in procreate, but I also seek advice from a professional artist on this

Stuck between the Ipad air 4 256gb and iPad pro 128gb coz they fall around the same price bracket/my budget. My general apps and lil bit of data cross around 100gb, so very skeptical with the 128gb ipad pro coz I wanna have these machines for atleast 4 to 5 years from now. The only thing why i am tilting towards the pro is the 120hz display, since I sketch a lot (currently on my iPad mini 5), use my iPad for music production, photo editing and loads of reading. would the refresh rate make any noticable difference during daily usage or is it of any good use 🤔 or just some "PRO" thing. Shall I go ahead with the "pro" but storage is an issue in the long run or will ipad air 4 256gb suffice for the next 5 years

It looks like 64GB is abit low for the average user. It all seems so spacious when you first get it, but after spending a few weeks loading apps, data and working storage (eg temp files, caches) you will be screaming for more storage. That is when you will start to pull your hair out and you have to make compromises to clear some space ... effecting your productivity. BTW James do you have a video that breaks down on the various apps and their storage demands you have on for us to judge if 64GB is really enough.

@@user-ww2nd4co2p I only use 20GB on my phone because I have only communication/social media/life management (cal, tasks) apps each are either IOS apps or 200MB each tops (maybe all 2-3GB tops) ... the only space hog is my Sat Nav 2-3GB on my phone. I already have 128gb worth of Apps on my Ipad, ATM i still testing out apps (so I might have several notes apps etc figuring which is the best before unloading the useless ones). But I figure with it might reduce to 64gb for apps alone. I would imagine you need to add 1-2GB of space every year as IOS bloats itself up with new updates.

@@rafg.1493 I know it boils down to a budget. If its a phone sure 64 is probably enough. Not as many apps, lesser data/photos can be clouded or ext storage. iPad is closer to laptop usage more apps needing more working storage esp if you are editing video for example. Apple has made it impossible to have working storage on ext storage, an extreme eg will be LumaFusion ... App size < 1GB Working storage could be many GB and you can’t use external storage for your video if that is what you are thinking ... all working video clips are transferred/copied to the working directory. If all you do is to use stock apps and some extra, sure 64+ext storage, but if more work is involved using it as a laptop 256gb is the way to go.

Im a digital artist, I used to use my aunts ipad 8th gen (it had procreate) So honestly if you're just starting out its best going for the 8th gen. Its got good storage and I rarely had to delete sketches and such, if you want a tip for saving storage then, always delete useless sketches. You can also simply buy an external drive if storage is still a problem. On another note, performance should be fine for a 8th gen, tho save up for the air and if you really like digital art, go for the pro. Personally as a digital artist who does commissions, Ipad pro is better for business but an air or 8th gen would work great for just a hobby or light business. In short, buy the 8th gen as a starter and work up. Air 4 if you have the money, and pro if you decide you like digital art, it can be very frustrating im telling you that. (This is put mostly in my perspective as I do have experience) If you're using it only for drawing you'll be fine, even then with a few apps it should be alright for ya. Edit: still be careful with storage, procreate can be hell with the file sizes

Hey there, i think it really depends on how long you are going to keep the ipad and what type of illustration you’re doing.
