Is your church sound booth in the WRONG place? An iPad for your digital console is going to help a LOT. Here’s how I use it to remote control the console and other tools you can use on the iPad too.

Been using an ipad since Covid hit and we needed to broadcast our service. We use the iPad to control the aux send to the broadcast audio. It’s made the things so much easier.

Hi James. Thank you for the great video. At church we provide an iPad for FOH remote and some older iPhones for IEM remote. They are stored and loaded in a safe with num keypad. Most desks have different apps for FOH remote or monitor mix remote. It’s better to use that, so musicians don’t accidentally control the wrong mix. With Allen & Heath it’s the 4You apps. Yamaha the Monitor Mix app. The best remote app for a lot of desks is Mixing Station. It works really well and it’s customisable. So you can have more faders on bigger iPads and it has DCA rollout. Another great apps are playback apps like Soundboard Studio and Multitracker.

Hey James! Just came across the video this evening. I was gifted with an IPad 12.9 two years ago and downloaded the Allen&Heath App and connected to our console via our local wifi for the console only. I have had fun remote controlling the console and mixing. I found that I can mix FOH and our Live Broadcast from my IPad. The headphone part is a bit of a challenge but I have come across a blue tooth device that I think I will be able to overcome that. The IPad is great for line checks as you talked about and even when I sub on the bass I have it on stage with me to work with all the other musicians when they get connected and tuned because usually the other sound techs have not arrived when we start rehearsing. It has been a valuable piece of equipment and I told my daughter that she spent her money wisely. I have other tips I could share but will not take up all the space here. I thing I did learn the first time I used was to make sure it is charged 100% and to go to the settings and select the screen to never turn off during the time I am using it to mix. After watching this video I thought Hey I am doing all the things you talked about!!! Blessing my friend!!!

Hey Gary! What an awesome gift - and a useful one! It's very handy to have access to your board on the go or when you're not near it. I'm glad I could help you out! Absolutely - there's nothing worse than having it run out of battery on you during a set. 😬 Blessings to you as well friend!!

Hey Y'all - I use an android tablet to control the digital mixer at our church. I kind of had to when we went on line and I needed to send video to RU-vid and Facebook for our shut-ins. If we hadn't we probably would have closed and don't know if we would have re-opened after covid. There is a .5 second delay in the video so I'm in a closed room, which I've had to match the audio with. We don't do much of a production since we're small so I just set the special reader and the pastor's mic for the mains and mute and unmute the needed channel off of the bus I have sent to the laptop. Pretty easy to control both the audio and the video at the same time. I also mix for weddings with my own gear and they give you less space to work with, so using the a Rack mixer just off stage and a tablet on the other side of the dance floor is almost mandatory. I just have my own IEM so the band leader can talk to me if ever necessary. IPad vs. Android? I find the IPad to be more sensitive especially for seeing low level "Noise" in the EQ with the program they use but, I don't think its worth buying a $1800 IPad vs. a $150 android or just using my cell phone.

I just started watching, so I apologize if you address this later. The Apple iPad is not the only tablet out there. I’ll update this at the end, but I’ve found that I can do pretty much everything with Android or Windows tablets that the iPad will do. I do use an iPad for many things, and controlling my Soundcraft and Behringer mixers is part of it. But I hope that you don’t get watchers who run right out and buy an iPad when they are otherwise happy with other devices. Edit: Ok, you briefly mentioned other options, and obviously you can only talk about what you know. I just wanted to make sure that viewers were aware that almost all of these functions have options.

Apple only supports updates up to 5 years on average so keep that in mind or you won't be able to update anything after 5 years On the other hand its also possible to use laptops for those apps

In terms of iPad apps - I have settled on the Studio Six Digital bundle - which I think their basic one is free. I added the Smaart Tools 1 bundle, along with a calibrated mic that is designed to plug right into the lightning port of my older iPad - even without the Smaart Tools, it includes an RTA with an SPL meter - which can be adjusted. I use a regular SPL meter, in the middle of my room, then adjust the one in the app, so it reads that same level, as where our sound booth is located isn't ideal and the difference is around 3-5 dB depending on the frequency. I use these to help me balance different speakers, as well as have an accurate sense for the actual loudness of our songs, which helps me to keep the quieter songs quieter and have a place to build the faster/louder songs - rather than just trust my ears. And, I do get style points for the RTA and mic pointing out, too. ;-)

I run sound from an iPad while playing bass or drums, and listening to the FOH mix in my IEMs. Couldn’t do that without an iPad.

I can agree that the architect did not know anything about audio. But then the churches i work in are built in 1918, 1843 and 1437. It was kind of a problem routing cables and not ruin the historical values.

Behringer has fallen behind on iPad app updates. I hope other brands are better.

Behringer has never been a board that has lead in tech. These boards are always a good 10-15 years behind the time. They are definitely designed for low budget setup.

I think 10 years is probably an exaggeration. I’ve been doing sound engineering and other technologies for over 40 years, and I guess I’m always leery of using the latest version of anything, especially in a production environment. I’d rather have something a few years old with the bugs worked out than be finding the bugs live.
@TomCee53
@TomCee53 7 месяцев назад
There’s a reason that using the latest is called the “bleeding edge”. 🩸

@@TomCee53 I have been in the industry for 30 years. Sound, lighting, video, rigging, set design all for live shows. No studio work. When I say Behringer is about 10-15 years behind I am not stating that they have worked out all the bugs. In fact they try to cut corners to make things more cost effective. I have had the craziest experience with Behringer consoles. It is one of those things you pay for what you get. Most of the Behringer consoles are about 50% cheaper than a Yahama, Allen…. They do make some high end consoles but most people don’t buy those. They buy Behringer consoles to save money.

Hey james why dont you build a mix from scratch, but here's the catch 🫴 you aren't allowed to use high pass or low pass filters 😉 you could replace the with shelfs thou 😎
