Kerry, I heard that they use this compound to anchor the chip, because the heat generated in the charging process would melt the welds, and lift the m.c. accidentally.

I have a ipad 4 with same probem. Does not turn on, but when connected to the computer it goes directly into DFU Mode. Do you mean it could nevertheless the PMIC ? Ugly was that it turned on once. I didnt did anything for a few month and after that suddenly it showed me charging screen! But I guess the moment it was able to start it was dead as before. I tested it in another housing aswell, but there it didnt do anything... I hope you have an Idea for me... :)

Your videos are awesome and so informative. I just gave this a shot but could not get the ic to release. I was at 450 on my station which usually does just fine on most, but the underfill on this bad boy is strong. It took 500 to finally get it to let loose. Looks like I only pulled one pad that goes to a filter cap (c8208). What awg wire do you use for your pad repair? Do you flatten the end out at all? I have 36 and 40 on hand, do I need smaller?

hey can u help me with my ipad mini 4, its problem is wont turn on, wont charge wont reboot. how can i fix?
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 8 лет назад
I find this interesting as I haven't done much BGA rework so just wondering, do you not have to reball the chip for reliable connection? I guess you just wipe solder over the pads of chip and board and what little bumps that gives is enough? Nice job though, well done!
@ibjessa
@ibjessa 8 лет назад
This question is really important. So I will ask you--think about the underlying problem. What is the cause? Is it that the chip itself is good, but has a cold solder joint on some of the balls? Or is the chip itself bad? What from the history would make you think one over the other? You could reball the existing chip, or you could install a new chip (with new balls already on it). What would make you choose one strategy over the other?
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 8 лет назад
+Jessa Jones Certainly the choice of action is key to the reliability of repair. I was really wondering if in this case you reballed the old one or just went for a quick fit to see if it was even going to work?
@ibjessa
@ibjessa 8 лет назад
+Jonny Fix reballing a chip is only warranted if the underlying defect is suspected cold joints under the chip. This is unlikely in the case of a chip where the balls are protected and sealed to the chip with underfill. The only way that could be a possibility is if there was a bad drop. The video says this mini did not have a history of bad drop. This means the chip itself is dead. Reballing a dead chip will not bring it back to life. The only choice here is to replace the chip with a new chip.
@JonnyFix
@JonnyFix 8 лет назад
+Jessa Jones oh my apologies, when the text came up that said you pulled pmic from second iPad mini I thought you were using that ic in this repair rather than a new one. Either way I look forward to trying this type of repair one day :)

@TonyToneFixMyPhone
@TonyToneFixMyPhone 8 лет назад
+Jessa Jones So I freeze sprayed and see that the PMIC is the first place that gets hot ( 5S H20 damaged). So if there was a short somewhere else, it could still cause the PMIC to get hot???

Thank you thank you thank you for your reply means a lot to mean and I can learn alot from a simple yes or no : )

I have had this problem five times over the past year and a half (with an iPad Mini 1). Apple is done giving me replacement devices. Since a new iPad now costs $300, rather than $100, I'm at a loss. Do you know if there's a reliable model that doesn't have this issue? I'm willing to invest in a new machine, but not if I keep having these chips fail on me for no reason.

Thanks for the reply, i had tried to practise transfer eprom ic (U6_RF) from death board to lock board, unlucky B3 (SPI_CS_L) and C3 (SPI_data_miso) were missing pad. Checked back it does not have any torn trace but tried to view schematic it has connections to Baseband IC.In this case is it consider as NC? Should I make a jumper to jump it directly to baseband ic A13(SPI_CS_L) and E14 (SPI_data_miso) ? Currently the board is no display, please advice.

I have an Ipad Air A1474 for repair from another repair company. The Ipad's digitizer was broken on the floor and suddenly at that time the Ipad was dead., could not be charged and was not recognized by Itunes. I received the Ipad stipped with a new digitizer to troubleshoot the problem. Lightning usb cable provided 4 Volt and this voltage was measured on 1 of the copper pads at the other side of the mobo underneath the power IC chip. However the battery did not get charged and I measured 2.8V on the battery (while voltage written on the battery is 3.7V). My questions are: - do you suspect the power IC chip (does not get hot while when only charging cable and battery (with wires) was connected to the mobo). - when you do suspect the power IC chip, can it be solved by reflowing the power IC chip ? Or do you advise, just replace it by a new one ? Or do you think I need to do more troubleshooting first by measuring all the power rails first with the schematics and the test link drawing program ?
@JessaJones
@JessaJones 8 лет назад

@proconsoles_nl
@proconsoles_nl 8 лет назад

i wouldn't attempt to replace the iPad Air PMIC unless I had a much stronger reason. That is a $40 chip!
@proconsoles_nl
@proconsoles_nl 8 лет назад
I was also thinking that, need to find out which points to check to really prove that it is the power management IC chip, which is defective. It's an expensive chip indeed, but with removing the chip in a not so proper way, can make it even more expensive. Thanks for your responses.
@proconsoles_nl
@proconsoles_nl 8 лет назад
Tested the battery first with a mobo from A1475 Ipad Air and is working, battery will be charged up to 4.07V. Also with the fully charged battery from the A1475, nothing happens, Ipad does not start up. Nothing recognized in Itunes also. But the working A1475 mobo with the battery from A1474, does get recognized in Itunes. Measured all the components in between the battery and power IC and all have the correct values. Measured and compared all the test points underneath the power IC (are identical) from A1475 and A1474 mobo with only lighting usb connected and I see huge differences. Especially the PPVBUS_PROT which is 4V at A1474 mobo and 5V at A1475. Measured again at the lighting adapter female plug, also 4.0V and 5.0V. So I almost concluded that it is the power IC chip. But I do think it is strange that the power IC chip only gets 4.0V on the A1474 mobo (which does not start up) and gets 5.0V on the A1475 mobo (which is working). Do you know the minimum voltage the power IC needs, in order to work correctly ?

I did a bunch of mini PMIC chips that day. They are all the same. The iPad at the beginning is the same as the iPad at the end. The others were just practice donor boards. I never placed a new chip on them. Not sure if the clips I used here from the pulling chip and then pad clean up are all from that same mini or one of the donor boards, I just chose the best view since on some the chip was not under the microscope the whole time. this one had three microjumpers, and I didn't get a clip of putting the microjumpers in for the missing pads :( Just happy that this repair worked. I have had it in my pile since May!
