YES! I was seriously considering upgrading to the new iPad Pro from my early 2015 MacBook Pro but the front camera placement and lack of certainty of wether you'll be able to turn off the snapping feature for the cursor are actual deal breakers for me, believe it or not

That LiDAR sensor could be there to give developers enough time to make apps that take advantage of it for when the next flagship iPhone launches. It also gives Apple enough time to fix the bugs before the iPhone launch

Yes, and LiDAR in general is a precursor to dedicated AR hardware. It will help Apple avoid the chicken and egg problem that occurs with a new hardware platform not having a useful app ecosystem when it finally launches. Very smart on Apple’s part.

Really impressed with how polished this review is, considering the limitations the video team went through to make it. Half the people I watch have swapped over to basically glorified vlogs, using their phones with the earpod mic for audio. Love the effort!

My iPad will arrive today, and I’m already bouncing around while waiting (I’m 70, so I should be over that, but I’m not). I ordered the Brydge a month ago. The original price for the 12.9 was the same as Apple is charging-$349. But since the announcement, it’s dropped way down to $229. I’ll get Apple’s too, and see how they compare.

I bought the 2018 iPad Pro, and it’s amazing! I’m an engineering student and I take all my notes on it. Yes, I have an Alienware laptop for programming and lots of other software, but the iPad is amazing to carry around, for notes at lectures, for work, logbooks, and I do write reports on it too. I had to replace my old MacBook with a proper computer ( for engineering atleast) and a computer that I can carry around

Apparently the late 2020 iPad pro will have 5G and the mini led displays. Makes sense for 2018 iPad pro owners to wait till then at the very least.

호로요이 중독자 I’m in the same boat, but the rumor is in late fall a new 12.9 model will be released with a proper chip upgrade with the A14X and with 5G alongside with a mini-led display and if that comes to fruition I would definitely purchase it.

I think it should’ve came with a telephoto on the back the most frequent case i see is people using the ipad to take photos in classrooms and in big conferences how would the wide angle camera be useful on an ipad?? wouldn’t u use ur phone to take photos of the scenery or in a small room when u most need a wide angle

crossandshoot the wide angle camera is the default camera on phones, so the question is ultra wide or telephoto. I think I prefer the ultra wide option to having better zoom capabilities at least on an ipad

I still wish I had gotten the 12.9” instead of the 11” in 2018...maybe next time, I’m certainly sitting this one out. I do love how infrequently the Pros come out, makes my iPad the cutting edge longer, which means it holds its value longer.

I love the new camera upgrade. I am a volleyball coach and alot of coaches, scouts, parents and some scouting software use the iPad to record game footage or even stream it. For those purposes it's a good upgrade. The AR idk, maybe it's just future proofing .....

I work sometime with photogrammetry , and the Lidar can be revolutionary if someone develop a app for it! A normal Lidar scan can cost 1k normally , sure will not be the same but it's greate to have access to it

Well no. In terms of marketing, pretty much no one is using Y because... just try spelling it. Epsilon... And they named it A12Z because if you then ignore Y, Z cakes after X and the chip is still based on the A12, not the A13. That's why A12Z. Pretty easy actually.

the reason its z is because its the last chip of the a12 class and the next ipad will be a14x or a13x also because y is pronounced “why” so they dont want people saying Y did apple do this chip

Ive been using a mouse since earlier updates (yes this one changed the whole interface, but a mouse still worked great), and let me say 1000% buy an external trackpad instead ... now that I’m on 13.4 my mouse works far worse.

The camera bump on the iPad makes more sense since when you add the keyboard (old or new) it will be flushed. Making it flushed to the case give up "some space" that will otherwise not be utilized anyway when you add the keyboard case coz you get a "hole" instead of a bump on naked iPad.

I think you should stop saying things like “the increased cpu and gpu performance don’t matter.” Statements like this encourage manufacturer’s to become complacent. The iPad is good because Apple has continued pushing it’s performance boundaries every year, and we don’t want that to stop. Making fun of the spec bumps like it doesn’t matter is counterproductive.

While I'm agree with your statement, I think what Dieter said is useful for future buyer who searches for the better iPad right now. To see which one to buy (old or new), we need to see what is the pros and cons. If the old and the new iPad only differs that much like Dieter showed, I would chose the old one.

That is a good point about the camera not being active when you switch to another app - if Apple wants this to be a productive machine, there needs to be a change to that. Or give us the option to leave the camera on while switching to other apps.

Aaron Stone AirPods and apple watch are best selling in their category, see Apple is limitedly innovated so it doesn’t affect their brand image cause how much ever you hate them, you will have to agree that they are a really large company, so any wrong decision will be adopted by other companies. Recently iPhones are also very non innovative, even iPhone X had everything which already existed but Apple just became the best at doing it, such as the display was an oled which exists from decades but when Apple used it, they had the smallest bezels in the world

The Lidar is for sports training. That's why it is first announced on iPad, so trainers can use fancy apps to show you how you move. And of course it's so they can manufacturer cheaper Lidar for Apple Car in due time.

I am really interested to see how developers make use of that LiDAR in the coming year. Pretty sure we will see some awesome apps.. maybe not just strictly AR apps, but apps that require some good sense of the environment to work better, such as photo apps?

Most amazing thing in my opinion is the support to work-type apps, like Citrix, Teams, Office, VPN and Remote Computer Access that allows me to use my office’s desktop (Windows), so, even though it is not the same as a regular laptop in terms of availability of software, you can remote access one, which has it all and that does it for me. I don’t need a laptop anymore, I think the iPad is even better built than the MacBooks, it’s is fast, less buggy and easier to deal with.

Victor Carpinelli I am actually thinking to get the iPad Pro as a laptop replacement as I could access the Windows desktop on remote for specific tasks. Do you have any advice on the best solution to do so? Have been looking for Parallels Access, but it’s not easy to setup Wake On LAN remotely.

Claudio Sposito right now that’s how I’m using it... I’m doing home office because of the quarantine, and I use Remote Desktop just fine. Works perfectly, specially now with this new IPadOS 13.4 release. There is nothing complicated to it, just some minor configurations. And I’m a developer so I connect remotely to do coding and process some heavy stuff but whenever I can I just use the IPad itself for other browse related tasks, Outlook, meetings or access client environments thru Citrix. I bought the Apple Magic Keyboard and I have the Magic Mouse too, I prefere to use a real keyboard than the keyboard-cases, but you could use any Bluetooth keyboard or mouse. If you are open to the change I don’t think you will regret it.

Claudio Sposito I have also been using this configuration in a similar fashion to Victor. Prior to IOS13’s accessibility mouse feature, the RDP/VNC clients built their own variations of cursor support. The ones that I settled on were Jump Desktop and Citrix Workspace. These both have great mouse support, although it requires the Citrix X1 mouse (or swiftpoint GT). Now that Apple has released IOS13.4 today with their full support for mouse/trackpad, I expect the RDP/VNC clients will update to support this as well, and any mouse will do. The new trackpad support for gestures is better then mouse imo.

I should also mention that Jump Desktop has external monitor support (at several resolutions and aspect ratios). I wish Citrix Workspace (or Apple preferably) would catch-up in this regard.

I use my ipad as a personal computer, and I have a surface laptop 3 as my daily work computer. What really helps in making the iPad Pro is a a keyboard case and now a good mouse or trackpad. The only thing that I wish they would include is the ability to backup your iPhone to the ipad, because there are those who do not use iCloud to backup their devices. And when I use the backup feature in iOS itself, I never can get the darn thing to work.

The final point is what I keep saying every time an iPad Pro comes out: Really nice, but overkill for the vast majority of people. I also agree that it CAN replace a laptop, but it requires enough tricks and workarounds that again, it's not worth it for many users. A compact laptop combined with a less expensive iPad is definitely a better solution for me.

I really do want an iPad pro, but it's going to have to wait because I bought a 2 in 1 for $550 with an i5 8265u and 256 gb of storage over the summer. It's just hard to justify the iPad when I know a 2 in 1 with windows ink will do so many things better at half the cost when factoring in the keyboard. Until the iPad can do almost everything as well or better it's a hard sell for me.

Apple said once in a keynote that the iPad works as a great viewfinder for some. Hence the latest & greatest optics in every new model.

The hugest downsides in getting an iPad that isn't the 2018/2020 Pro version are the Lightning port and the 1st gen Apple Pencil. I guess most people could get behind not having the edge-to-edge Liquid Retina display, the best-in-class mobile processor (tbh, the A12Z is not that different from the A12X and the A12 is just great for everyone), the latest iPhone camera on an iPad, the Face ID camera array, etc, as long as it's a great, future-proof and useful iPad without the current annoyances on lower-level Apple tablets.

I have a workstation at home and an iPad Pro on the go for the last 4 years. I don’t see the need for a laptop so for me, iPad has always been a computer.

OMG I totally agree with you. The iPad Pro is a device that can replace a computer for most people & lots of work can be done on it. I think I’ll be sticking with my 2018 12.9” iPad Pro though, it’s a 1TB model and I’ve yet to max this thing out. The A12X Bionic is still a beast of a chip. I don’t do AR on my iPad but I could see that LIDAR sensor being helpful on new iPhones as I am a Pokemon GO player. But thank you for this review, it has helped me make this decision to stick with my existing iPad Pro because it’s still such a beast of a device. Especially now that I have a USB-C hub for it. I may pick up that new keyboard with trackpad though when it ships in May. Or I may just buy a Magic Trackpad 2.

Watching this on my 2018 iPad Pro whilst typing this on my desktop set up. Pointer control makes it feel like an actual desktop to me 🤷🏾‍♂️ Also great point about the iPad and video. Why is everyone bashing it or acting as if its weird? It has a camera for a reason lol

a radar uses radio waves which also moves at the speed of light. But lidar has a shorter wavelength which means more detail.

Thanks to phones getting so big I barely use my iPad anymore. I save it for holidays,long flights and watching RU-vid occasionally. Also at Hearthstone or COD mobile at time's. I'm going to wait to upgrade mine is 3 years old but feels fast as ever.

The keyboard case with built in trackpad is the game changer for most "Pro" folks. I do lots of Excel and Word for inventory management at work while being mobile so paying $300 for that case is not a big deal and a must for me. The average Joe can use any cheap $10 mouse for home use which is great for them. Therefore don't bash the case if it's something that is not for you.

Thanks for the review. You mentioned the selfie camera but did not compare it to the 2018 ipad. I use my ipad for creating teaching videos in online courses. Is there a difference in the selfie camera between 2018 and 2020 versions?

I had the new keyboard case on order and cancelled it after realizing that in combination with the keyboard folio, all I really need is the Magic Trackpad 2.
