LPT for the screen - Put the iPad in Guided Assistance, restricting the iPad to only HK. Plug iPad into smart plug to cycle charging on/off. Turn auto lock on iPad to desired time to put screen to sleep. Next place motion sensor around mounted iPad area. Preferably Hue or Aqara, they’re snappy, very responsive. Then set iPad to receive notifications when motion detected. When sensor is triggered it instantly wakes iPad screen to what the Guided assistance is restricted to. Lastly since iPad is in guided assistance, the motion notification will not be visibly. That’s it, very simple. Takes care of screen concerns and battery swelling. Plus it’s a sweet automation. Edit - guided access will obviously prevent you from quickly accessing other apps....

I was actually going to suggest Shortcuts-> Automation -> Create New. For a couple of things. One is to set a time of day, either by the sunrise/set (at that time or before or after). For screen brightness adjustment that is done automatically. Then an other for when battery charge level drops below a certain level. Could either have it send a text message to you. Or turn on an Home Kit device. Add an other to turn off that same device when it reaches a certain level.

@@RS-vy9qv I’ve actually have a charger set up for when battery level drops below 35%, it’ll turn on. Granted I’m not home yet but by the time I do, it’s at 20 or so. Then when the battery reaches 90% the charger turns off. Been doing this daily on my iPhone 12 pro max for a year. And battery health is still at 100%.

I have my unused iPhoneSE jailbroken and use activator to set it to charge when it's low on battery, and stop charging when it's 100%. I kind of "wall mount" my iPhoneSE (not iPad, only have 1 and i'm currently using it) and it acts like my "control center", especially when WatchOS7 messes up with shortcuts. so I can ask my watch to send message to jailbroken iPhoneSE, and it will execute what I ask.

Much better automation is in shortcuts, create one that turns on the smart plug when the ipad gets below 5% battery and end if it reached 100%

This is cool. My brother had this in his house in 2004, he could control all home functions, TV, Audio, Security from each, and any room of the house. The screen on the wall was the size of an ipad, no shit, and was HD clear. Tons of functions, and features, too fun not to buy. You will not, regret this purchase. I've seen it in action .

Crazy Glue a couple of super magnets to the back of the Ipad, mated to a couple of magnetic countersunk washers, screwed to the wall. You can then move the iPad from place to place, including metal doors, refrigerators or service panels. I do this with flashlights, cell phones and remote controlls throughout the house. A flashlight kept permanetly on the fusebox service panel might be a smart idea. They sell these coin sized neodymium magnets on ebay, Amazon and Alibaba. I love them.

Instead of AirPlaying directly to the HomePod from your iPad, I would suggesting scrolling down the list of available playback options and select the HomePod, then chick and chose your songs. This way the up next queue can be modified by more device than just the iPad.

Great video! I can see how most people would be inclined to use a HomePod rather than a wall-mounted iPad - just more convenient than getting up to stand in front of a wall to use it. However, it does look really amazing up there. And a big thumbs-up for the Home+ app!

It would be great if they had a visitor’s feature. I don’t want guests controlling MY bedroom or even seeing the status of my devices. I also don’t want them having access to disarming the security system. Apple probably feels we would be delving into the rabbit hole of delegating rights which ruins all their “elegant” “simplicity” but this visitor feature is very important if this is to gain serious adoption. You can just quickly assign a visitor profile to guests for their own iPhones and the wall-mounted iPad. Guests don’t need access to disarm your alarm after they break in.

I bought this mount because of you a year ago. I was excited because they were located 10 minutes from me and I could pick it up in person. 1. I’m mad it went down in price 😂😂 2. Do you experience bad audio quality when using the microphone and speaker for security cameras or face time calls because the iPad is enclosed? When I use the iPad to talk to someone at my front door they say it’s hard to hear me.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 года назад
Hey Sabrina, 10 minutes away, wow what are the odds?! I haven't really been using it much for communication through FaceTime or cameras. But yea, I would imagine the audio wouldn't be too great since I believe the microphone and speaker is blocked.

I have an old iPad 2. Pretty much gave up all hope of it when I was thinking HomeKit control was not an option for my old iPad. Last night I tried to add some of these third-party apps you mentioned and wallflower worked on my iPad 2. The home+ app did not install on my iPad. So instead of throwing my iPad 2 in the recycling bin I figured I might look into wall mounting it. Your video also made me think I do want a wall-mounted iPad for the visual aspect of HomeKit. I would want to upgrade to the paid version of wallflower ($64.99) and I would have to buy a wall mount for my iPad 2 ($5 if I use 3m Velcro-$30 for a cheap aesthetically pleasing wall mount) so for $97 or less I’m thinking about going for it vs buying an iPad Air 2. I am OK with the free version of wallflower but I’m considering getting the one time paid wallflower app but I would like to know what your thoughts are if it was any good. And by the way I’m OK with not being able to add devices or a Audomations/scenes Or even check security camera footage. If I do wall mount my iPad 2 I would definitely do so in a way where I can very easily upgrade to a newer version iPad.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 года назад
Regarding the wallflower app, I think it's subjective. Personally, I do love the way it looks. I really tried to like it for that reason. But it just wasn't that practical when it came to actually controlling homekit devices on a daily basis. But, again, that's just me. You may use homekit differently or prefer the aesthetics over the other stuff. And it's been quite a while since I tried it so I'm not sure if there have been any major updates or changes since.

I'd probably look into if you can have a screensaver run every so often as even if you don't care about it dying quickly you'll still have the possibility of screen burn in with the static icons in the same places all the time (think like the ATMs you see with shadows on the screen all the time)

Marc Solomon Scheimann you need to go to settings-> accessibility > guided access > set display lock to your preference (for example 1 minute). Then its ready. Now when you go in to the home app. Click on the left upper corner the house icon > choose the motion sensor under notifications and its done. Now you go to the home app screen or your preferred home app and with 3 clicks on the home button you can activate the guided access. After the 1 minute the screen goes off. Now when a move is detected by the motion sensor the ipad get a notification and your screen goes on. (The notification is not displayed). I hope you can do it. I’ll post the link of a German video, i hope this helps

It would be nice if the Home+ 4 app has a trial version. I don’t think we should pay for the full price if we weren’t satisfied with it. I do have a question for Shane. I have some devices that are not compatible with the Apple Home app. Will the Home+ 4 app detect them? An example would be the Ring devices. By the way, great video.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 3 года назад
Thanks Alvin. First, I have gotten a refund for an app in the past that I was not satisfied with...so that is possible, although maybe not guaranteed. And to answer your question...no. The Home+4 app is strictly a HomeKit app. So if you have accessories that do not support HomeKit, this won't help. It DOES however expose certain attributes of those homekit accessories, as well as capabilities, that may not be accessible in Apple's Home app.

I bit the bullet on this and bought a used iPad on eBay. It is an iPod 5 that I got for $85 because its edges were all cracked up, but the screen was ok. The edges get hid by the mount so not a big deal at all. So far I like it being there. It's nice having it there IMO. Its quick access to see what is on in your home and allows all to quickly control. I ran electric up from a switch below and installed a recessed box with a Qualcomm USB in it. I found a right angle lightening cable that fit in perfect. It is in our kitchen, which is a main thoroughfare for our house. So far I was using just the Home app, but I downloaded the Home+ 4 app, just need to get it set up. thanks for the idea Shane. Also, side note (question): Have you had problems with HOOBS staying connected? Seems like I am always having dropping issues with it and have to go on the server and restart the service. I have 4 AppleTVs and 3 HomePods, and now this iPad to work as hubs. You mentioned in a previous video about shutting down the AppleTV hubs, which I did, but still seeing some issues with buttons not working, etc.

I’m putting up a new iPad now. I’ve got the Vitabox installed and awaiting the iPad’s arrival on Christmas Eve of all days. The suggestion to have a new family member account is brilliant and I’ve been using the Home+ 5 app for a few weeks. Do you have a preferred music app? Also, on the main springboard on the app, do you keep all of your apps you use for this on one page and then move all other apps off screen now (handy new feature is iOS 15)?
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 2 года назад
Sounds great. For a while now (since making this video) I've just been using the Home app in guided access mode. This requires a password to exit the app. When doing this, it doesn't really matter what other apps and such are on the iPad Home Screen. And you probably don't even need to use a separate Apple ID when using guided access mode. There are some pros and cons to this method, but this has worked well for me. I just use the Apple Music app for music but rarely use it on the iPad, because again, it's locked into the Home app with guided access mode.

Thanks! I’m using the separate Apple ID for my wall mounted iPad only. My Apple TV, HomePod, and everything else is connected to my main Apple ID. Then you can just share/invite your homekit home with that ipad. The main reason I did this was just to keep personal stuff like messages, emails, etc off the wall mounted iPad. Another solution that works pretty well is to use the guided access feature and just lock the iPad into the home app, or whatever homekit app you prefer.

Sorry, only part of my message was sent. I watched your original video when you installed your iPad on the wall. I chose not to do this for the same reasons you now mention in your latest clip. I would like to give you a tip.......when you need to install something (not pictures) on drywall please don’t use any type of drill bit. Please consider using an awl to make the hole for a plug. . There will be less mess and the hole will be firm and will lead to more strength. Drill bits tend to break away the drywall on entry and within the hole. I hope this is understood and that it helps. Also, do you have any plans to review a “Level Lock”?

PERFECT! This helped out a lot...using the Home+ app in the background I was able to use add a condition right within the automation itself. This allowed me to create 2 scenes, 1) to alarm the system before bed, which basically starts the occupancy sensor on the camera. 2) to turn the scene off...I guess my goal is to have a manual button on the ipad on the wall that makes it easy to just turn it off or use Siri through HomePod.

Chris Kirby that’s basically what we did in that video. Used a smart plug as the condition. So turning the switch on or off in HomeKit would arm or disarm the alarm.
