The video shows some functions of the IPAnema parallel cable robot installed at Fraunhofer IPA, Stuttgart, Germany. Parallel cable robots are able to generate very fast and dynamic motion with accelerations of more than 10g. Due to the efficient force transmission they exhibit workspaces of up to 100m in each direction and can carry payloads up to some tons.

these systems are extremely performant! The only downside I see is the size of the room needed to operate them, and the restriction on some movements due to the space the cables take

The concept is quite nice, but I don't see a "real" application (except for the skycam ;)... It just wastes so much space. But who knows what the future brings...

it is a fairly low cost system, that might work for large scale additive manufacturing. for 3d printed concrete, you'd just need to install 4 masts and you'd be ready, this seems fairly interesting. another advantage is the space saving when not in use, you can simply store it on the wall and detach the cables.

@@satibel “3d printing” The cables connected to the lower corners are going to interfere with the printing job. The jobs would necessarily need to be restricted to a squat pyramidal space. A print head suspended on a gantry or pistons from above would be able to print within the entire volume.
@satibel
@satibel 3 года назад
@@CarFreeSegnitz there are already cable driven printers, the problem as you said, is that the print volume is much lower than the bounding box of the printer. but it is still useful if you have an existing room and can bolt the motors on the corners.

A real world application might be an automated production line. A camera scans a conveyer belt, a magnet on a system such as this can pick up the randomly scattered raw pieces, orient them correctly and line them up for automated processing downstream.

It's quite a simple yet useful concept and it can be used in different types of real experience simulations I like it

The cables connected to the lower corners are a limiter to what this can be applied to. They’re going to run into stuff you’re trying to manipulate. Scaled up it might make an interesting carnival ride, the rider sitting in a chair suspended on the cables.

Cool programming challenge but generally 2/10 for the concept.. this thing couldn't stack those boxes side by side. Why do a 2 axis manipulation with 6 drives and use about 50x more floor space whilst doing it?

Astonishing! Elegant solution to wind the cable up on a screw, so that both winding point and winding radius stays constant. I recently got the idea to build a RepRap that is suspended in cables/wires. (forums.reprap.org/read.php?178,344022,344022#msg-344022) Any thoughts from the creators of this machine would be incredibly valuable. I will definitely look out for more from Fraunhofer IPA in the future ;)
