In this episode of MIDIVERSE-TV we take a look at the iPG-800 iPad application. This app replaces the rare and expensive Roland PG-800 editor, and at only a fraction of the cost.. it really is a no brainer. I am absolutely satisfied with the performance of the app.
Since my original purchase they've upgraded this app with the addition of a iPG-300 editor, which worked out great for me... As i own a Roland Alpha Juno 1 which uses the PG-300 editor.
The iPG-800 works with Roland JX-8P and MKS-70.
The iPG-300 works with Roland Alpha Juno and JX-3P (with kiwi midi upgrade).

Underrated app. I've just discovered this app will also control the Roland D-50 aka its latest incarnation the D-05. I guess its too later now to request a similar function for the Blofeld. And of course its great value at £4.99

Many thanks for this. I'm just 'rediscovering' my 30 year young JX8P …just downloaded the app ..fantastic !! I suspect JX8P'ers can now seriously compete with the SC Prophets and Obi's for accessible analogue awesomeness ! Weekend sorted.

If you have the Roland JX8P manual, it has all the System Exclusive (SYSEX) codes for each fader on the PG800, plus some of the SYSEX codes for internal to the JX8P. The reason why you're hearing 'sticky notes' is that SYSEX takes over the JX8P - essentially, you're jumping in/out of a mode designed to talk directly to the synthesizer. Normally, this isn't much of a deal if you're doing parameter changes while not playing notes. However, as the sequencer is playing notes, the MIDI data stream is interrupted by these SYSEX commands taking over the synth, which can take several milliseconds - and this TOTALLY locks out ALL other MIDI data from being received. So what happens is that there's a command; 1) MIDI Note On, Note, Velocity ** The sequencer waits the appropriate note on duration, then; 2) MIDI Note Off, Note, Velocity (#00) What's happening is that the Note Off data is being blocked by the SYSEX command "hogging" the Synthesizer. And so you get "stuck" notes. The real PG800 doesn't use MIDI. My guess is it directly accesses the hardware control matrix before the MIDI circuitry... Best guess is there's no way around stuck notes, apart from a) making parameter changes when notes don't play, or; b) leave a sufficient amount of time after making the parameter change to sending the MIDI Note Off command/data.

This is a really helpful comment as this is really gunna suck for me when i get my setup sorted like this... Do you know if you can convert a midi cable to DIN to put it directly into where the PG800 was meant to go?

Thanks for this demo! Unfortunately the stuck note issue is a dealbreaker for live shows, and I bet it could ruin a few studio takes if you like to ride your filter or LFO settings while playing. But it's definitely much cheaper than a real PG-800 and pretty slick looking. One thing is disappointing about it, though; it would've been nice if the faders & knobs changed when changing patches. Maybe they were trying to stay true to the original PG-800, but that's a hardware inconvenience that could've been easily fixed with this software (maybe give the user the option of traditional static PG-800 vs. flying faders?).

advantage....stick synth under desk. save space. question: can you record automation data in your DAW from the app?
@JimAtwood
@JimAtwood 9 лет назад
Two advantages of the having the original PG-800 are one, you free up your midi ports and two, the dedicated PG-800 port on the Roland JX-8P will eliminate the stuck notes. Yes, the iPG800 is cheaper and it shows the values of each patch which are both reasons to definitely pick it up for your ipad. However, the original PG-800 is still worth having not to mention it adds value of course to the JX-8P. Also note that if you have a broken LCD display on the JX-8P you can use the iPG800 as an LCD to change the patches. It's not hard at all to turn on sysex on the JX8P blindly if you know how many times to push the button. Currently I have three JX-8Ps and it's a great synth.

Jim I don't need midi connections with wifi cheers though The synth would be connected to the programmer anyway so you've used the midi ports, as it is it's just connected to the PC via a box. You're no worse off Yes the hardware is nice to have but in all fairness over the Roland super expensive programmer I'd rather use a modern midi controller and something like the midi solutions event processor or the rekon software, way better than the original and very expensive solution. The beauty of the iPad app is it changes the synth parameters auto when switching tones on the synth, it's not perfect as you do get slight jumps on filter sweeps if you grab the iPad a bit but at 3.99 who's moaning......

I can't seem to connect mine. I've connected the midi correctly - I'm able to play the JX8P and it's triggering midi into the iPad which is wirelessly sending to Ableton. But there's no reverse - the iPG-800 isn't changing anything in the Jx8P and also, Ableton isn't sending to the JX8P... I've turned on Exclusive in the Jx8P as per the manual. Any ideas?

how are you sending midi from the daw and hooked up to ipad at same time?

Hi, does this allow you to automate in ableton? Or at least record automation in real-time from the iPad screen?

Thanks for the video. Would you let me know how you connected your devices? How did you play the Roland from the M-audio keys? I would think that midi in and out of the jx8p are already blocked by the in and out of the irig midi interface (or which ever other you are using), is that right? I am trying to recreate the setup with an old ensoniq as the master keys, but i just cant get the devices to talk to each other properly. Thanks!

Heinz M thanks for watching! The iPad is connected to Ableton Live via Network Wifi MIDI, so that has its own track which sends MIDI out. Then the m-audio midi controller is just plugged into the computer USB, which also has its own MIDI track. Lastly in Ableton, I set both of the MIDI tracks to output on the same channel (the same channel the synth is on). So the final cable then is from the computer MIDI interface to the Roland. In other words, iPad > Ableton. M-audio > Ableton. Ableton > Roland. Hope that helps!

That helps a lot. I realize that if i want to send two midi ins to the j8xp via midi cable instead of wifi/computer network, I will need a midi merge box to recreate your ableton midi setup. Cheers for taking the time to explain the setup!

I’m sorry if you’ve written it somewhere and I missed out on it. But how can I connect my iPad to my Juno directly?
@lambertlambert7076

Buy a iOs midi interface and be careful to check if you have a lightning or a 30 pin connector on your iPad. Your interface must have the proper cable to connect either an old ipad with 30pin connector or a new one with lightning connector.

I see a few comments about “sticky notes”. AFAIK, this is a common problem/flaw with the JX-8P keybed.

Using the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer II uses the MIDI in & out ports of my MKS 50, so I have no way to audition the sounds I am editing since there's no way (I can find) to include a MIDI controller. Also, I bought the module to use in Digital Performer which also needs to see MIDI.... does anyone know how to accomplish this? MOTU tech support isn't too keen on supporting 3rd party apps.

I think its an iRIg Midi converter.
@lambertlambert7076

You need to look for ios midi interface on Google. Be careful to check if your iPad has a lightning or 30pin connector. Most of the iOs midi interface doesn't have anymore the 30pin connector. They solely use the lightning one.

Junch Tulpa Thanks for watching, I appreciate it. There's a setting that needs to be turned on in the MIDI edit section, I think that's what the issue is. It's called "Active Sense" I believe.. I don't have it right in front of me so i can't check for sure. Pretty sure that's it though. Hope that helps.
