@@omsingh4478 No idea about "reviwers" but other actual creditable reviewers are saying, for the most part, the front glass is a decent improvement over previous models.
@@Ean.oo7 nah, mkbhd, all of them, drop resistance i dont doubt, but, what matters more is scratch resistance, and everybody is saying their phones have scrtches, like 2 of my firends also got iphone 12, and thevye already scratched it
General engineering principles would say if you want something to be less brittle and prone to cracking, make the material softer and more forgiving. It seems this is what Apple have done with the iPhone 12. They compromised screens that were hard to scratch, for screens that don’t crack when dropped. I was personally very disappointed with how easily the 12’s scratched
As an Engineer I would like to point out that using a material with higher toughness of course will give you a material that can plastically deform to a greater threshold, thus being less brittle and less prone to fracturing. However, this comes at a cost, because materials with higher toughness typically have lower hardness. Lower hardness = less scratch resistant. Not sure how different than regular glass this new "ceramic" apple is using is though. P.s. Using sand paper to test for scratch resistance is a very very bad idea. Sandpaper, is made of the hardest materials out there, almost nothing can resist a scratch from sandpaper. In fact, most of the time your phone gets scratched in your pocket or bag is because of grit/sand particles in your pocket that rub against the phone. And sandpaper is usually made from way harder materials that regular sand..
@@amitverma-sr2ik well if its glass, it just wont be scratch resistant against sandpaper. You need something with a score of 8-9 on the Mohs' Hardness scale to not get scratched by sandpaper, and glass doesnt reach that high.
Nothing special about the ceramic shield, the borders of the phone protects the screen. The pressing force that can withstand this new screen is ~1.3x and not 4x. Apple is disgusting
When i pulled my 12 out of the box, i put it immediately in a case. Also, as I pulled the plastic cover off the screen, i had a screen protector in the other hand and slapped it on the front immediately. Yep, I’m obsessive that way, thank you very much.
No your insuring your investment that's all. Always out a case and screen protector on my phone's. Plus they are getting more and more expensive to fix
Its not obsessive i do the same ting as soon as a new phones comes out of the box screen protector and case dont even turn it on till its all protected. Cell phones are way to expensive these days haha
I wished I could do that but I dont like buying a screen protector or case before getting the phone cause I get cold feet sometimes and walk out the door without buying the phone haha
Material with higher toughness are of course more resistant to fracture because they are less brittle. However, higher toughness usually means lower hardness which means less scratch resistant. We'll see though.
After viewing a few drop tests for iphone 12 , it appears the design of the iphone, having the glass under the frame, helps to protect the glass. The drops were damaging the frame and not touching the glass...which is a good thing but the front glass is easy to scratch so will still need a screen protector.
I got the iPhone 12 black. Very pleased with the durability. Very strong ceramic shield on the glass and very fast download speeds and stream speeds also. But one negative thing about the phone is the rear glass is very susceptible to scratches. I haven’t even dropped nor done anything to the phone yet. Just left it in my bag,(btw no car keys or sharp metal objects are inside the bag) and the rear glass already has a small scratch. Still the best phone to me I’ve ever seen yet.
@@Newmindseton obviously over the years the phones battery life and performance has degraded a bit due to use so its not necessarily still the best given its predecessors the iPhone 13 and 14 are much more advanced but still works good
@@maneesh2316 😂😂 really? That's just glass with a fancy name... Just like liquid retina for an LCD display 😂😂😂 Apple just comes out with fancy names... Don't get me started on bionic chips 😀😀
@@emmanuelpraveen1 that’s actually made of a heavy layer of substance called ceramic it’s combined with nano particles idiot that’s ur bleedy thinking no one has solution for it
I’m still on an old 6 with a dodgy screen.......and that was a hand down from one of my grown up kids to the wife. She dropped it and messed the screen up so the kids gave her another hand down so I got this old 6. There was a time that we were on contracts and we gave them our upgrades lol
@Vasudeva Rao Madaka dude, these people are trying to show you how the iPhones do with normal day activities for you to be aware. THEY ARE DOING THIS SO YOU DONT HAVE TO.
Using a cellphone without a case just feels weird to me. A case just feels better in the hand for me. It's always nice to pull the phone out of its case after years of use, seeing a brand new looking phone.
Kinda dumb....given (every) company needs to make a product to a price point. Being that it is new, I can see the production costs going down over time making it more feasible to add in future models. Nothing really surprising about that.
Nope. Still would put a case and screen protector on it. Most of the time the screen cracks when you're not trying to crack it. Falling when coming out of a car, or slides off a table. All it takes is rock being in a the right place at the wrong time. SMH.
Yea I found that my screen mostly cracks when it falls and lands on a tip of a corner of the phone, probably cause of how gravity works against the shape of the glass. Hardly ever cracks when it lands flat in my experience
Nothing special about the ceramic shield, the borders of the phone protects the screen. The pressing force that can withstand this new screen is ~1.3x and not 4x. Apple is disgusting
@@nicholasn.2883 You are right and absolutely wrong. Case by case. When you buy one from one of the more reputable vendors like dome glass, I guarantee it holds up very well. I have a screen protector on a 11pro max bought off of wish 1yr ago and Still 100% scratch free. Note 8 Dome glass also scratch free.
What sandpaper did you use? The material kind of matters. Sandpaper can be composed of a wide variety of stones from low hardnesses like 5 to high hardness like 9+ Edit: at 5:14 you can see it’s aluminium oxide, which has a harness of 9! That’s not a good analog for concrete which is 3-7.
Really appreciate the "real world test". Much more important to me that I know how it will fare against every use as apposed to being dropped off of a 10 ft latter onto concrete 😂
I have the blue IPhone 12 and I’m not comfortable going careless but this is the first iPhone I feel confident to go without a screen protector. The case on the back helps to protect the cameras since this phone is my camera and with 5G still developing I’m hoping this phone can last me a long time. I plan to do all I can to extend the life.
As much as I appreciate these type of videos and have been watching them for years.. in no way can I understand why tossing a phone around in a bag with coins and keys simulates two weeks of wear and tear. Especially with the cost of phones these days. The thing is safe in a case on a flat surface when it's out of my pocket, or it's in my pocket by itself and not up against my full set of keys. Great video for the content though!
@UCTfd4pY2IiPJSIlA29TWn6Q I used to think most scratches would happen from this too, but most likely is happening from other things.. not ruling an empty pocket out, but we really use our phones a lot.. they get set down on all kinds of surfaces, etc.
The glass may have survived but did they test out the cameras to see if they were still functioning? Just because there isn't any external damage doesn't mean something might not be damaged internally.
Because apple products can do nothing. Apple is so far behind with design and their system is way too locked. But has good build quality. Are you very bad at electronics or are under 10 years or over 60 then an iphone is right for you
Tech RU-vidrs drop these phones every time a new iPhone comes out - including CNET. Also, videos like this tend to get a lot of views. And who doesn't want money from Google?? 😆
Wow if a NEVER saw this video i was GONNA do the drop test when I get the iPhone 12 but I am not gonna GIVE up getting the iPhone 12 thank YOU don’t give UP.
I got the iPhone 12 and dropped it on the hard tile floor in my bathroom twice with no case . Once on the side of the toilet and the other time knocked it off the counter, neither time had any scratches on the phone after . I was so surprised .
Not me. I’ve never liked phone cases/screen protectors. But cracking the back of the phone isn’t really that big of deal. You can’t feel the cracks and I don’t look at the back of my phone, so it doesn’t effect the functionality at all. However, after multiple drops on the back, pieces of glass will probably start falling out, exposing the phone’s internals, and that’s when it becomes a problem. That’s why i wish they’d put the ceramic shield on the back of the phone too. Either that or find a way to make wireless charging work through an all aluminum back. I know Apple could find a way to do that if they really wanted to.
@@aktm1407 Perhaps. But my original iPhone SE is far sturdier than the modern iPhone counterparts due to its diminutive form factor...and metal back. Too bad the 12 doesn’t have a metal back.
Wouldn't it be more of a test dropping on a corner? That's how I always drop my phone's. Not an iPhone guy but very impressed with the front screen protection on this!!!
mine scratched (tiny little ones) in less than a week without a screen protector. I didn’t drop it or put it in a bag or anything. you NEED a screen protector
Corning has admitted for years that getting scratch resistancy is much much much harder than getting crack resistancy. People are still looking for a combination of both though. I am not a fan of expensive smart phones at all, but I might make my first exception on the rule and get myself an Iphone 12 mini. I am a network engineer who used to run a repair shop in the past, so by definition I HATE what Apple has done to the newest phones making it impossible to replace parts yourself. Getting the Iphone 12 as a daily driver without protection will be my ultimate test of approving/disapproving the value of expensive phones.
Compared to last years drop test, this was definitely a step back on how controlled the drops were 😕 That vacuum machine you guys brought to the table last year was sleek! What happened?
Even if it were indestructible a case still helps by adding grip. Something hard and smooth is too slippery and that rubbery grip makes it nicer to hold
I don't like using phone cases with iPhones because I love the smooth feel of the iPhone so much, so I always get a apple watch with it. That way it's always in my pocket with a just a packet of tissues. I therefore only need to take it out when I'm seated and holding it with two hands. That way when I inevitably drop it I'll be inside and it will be from a relatively low height.
My 12 mini’s Ceramic Shield cracked. It was bad luck. I have had it for 2 years and decided to take the screen protector off after having it for 6 months. It got me over a year, and just last Sunday it fell 2 feet from the car door onto our drive way (and the top corner cracked). I’m just assuming that was bad luck. Even though these drop tests are mostly true, cracks can still happen (as in my case)
I have the iPhone 11 Pro Max. I used to never drop my phone and all my used phones are mint. Apple said it is the hardest iPhone but I dropped it from the height of my knee and it shattered into pieces.
Yeah apple bad and samsung good right? Like they paid boyband and girlband to not taking picture with their fans because it's not a samsung phone or if it's an iphone...
one drop and the back shatters? that's pretty bad. i dropped my Huawei P20 numerous times, unfortunately, and it's in one piece, barely a scratch. maybe just luck, but still...
The purse test was great because of no visible scratches, as far as I can say, because my XR tempered glass broke after I kept a key fob and am really surprised how that could happen. Tile test @ 2:42 was a heart in my mouth moment. I would never do that to my iPhone ever. How come no scratches on that test too?. It is a testimony to Apple in the way they’ve done the phone!!.. brilliant!!!.. otherworldly!!.. loved the test and I would use a case always.
I have the pelican guardian case and AT&T brand glass screen overlay on my iPhone11 max and I could not be happier with this combo. Ive destroyed several iPhones with otter boxes (fully encased) due to dust and grime getting inside and rubbing against the glass causing etching. My current combo is superior and I will never go back to a fully encased phone case again.
I think the problem with these drop tests is that in actual situations you probably won‘t drop the phone like that. Everytime I dropped a phone there was a little more force involved, like when you trip your phone might fall forward with a little more force than the „test fall“ which falls to the ground without any force; or if it falls from the bed, or you try to grab it when it falls out of your hand, then there is a lot more force. I will not rely on these drop tests too much and will use a back cover, or at least a dbrand skin or something like that, although I absolutely hate to use phones with covers.
She is being extra gentle while 'testing it'.But when the phones drop or slide on street its not going to be gentle. And she is not showing the result properly to camera. This video is like a apple advertisement..
This doesn’t make sense it’s on a public side walk and not clean concrete. There is tons of scuffs on the concerts and it appears to have water damage on the concerts watch someone else!!
If you buy an iPhone you definitely have to buy a protective case and a screen protector that will help you out a lot because you can drop your phone anytime from your pocket or when you get out of the car, when you are eating you can drop it on the floor because the phone is really slippery because of the Sleek design so I would definitely have a protector case and screen protector thank you for your videos of iPhone. You guys do a great job keep up the good work.
Great, I’ll use it naked until I damage the frame and then I’ll put a bumper. Let’s not forget that we don’t drop phones head on like that. Impulse tries to save it. It drops from 2-3 feet high after final touch.
Well the thing is I would rather the screen break than the back. Screen can be repaired back will need the phone to be replaced sooo I don’t see the point in having strong glass on one side only. I don’t get it
Not many people are repeatedly dropping their phones from 9 feet. The main problem I wish they would fix are the micro scratches. Those are extremely annoying. Be nice not to use a screen protector.
@Maanav Khurana yeah man i been using Samsung since the very first one and i have to tell you I'm very disappointed with them to the point that I'm considering making a change for the first time.
Im still using note4 since 5 years and dropped a hundred times didnt crack. But when I buy a phone I put a gorilla glass screen protector and case immediately on it.This way you can use it for long years.I will buy a new phone now and I will do the same..
