@H M Bingo! I came on there to post just that. You can hear in this voice. The camera's days are numbered. Used to be that cell phones could take pictures. Now, with the 12 Pro Max, cameras can make phone calls.

Good review. It's nice to see feedback from another photographer. People expect these phones to take the perfect shot all the time, what they don't realize is the Camera is only one element, a knowledge of lighting, composition, and a creative eye, are also important in creating that perfect shot...

nice vid i do pro portrait shoots and yes, very much "decent" and some keepers in that shoot. lot of capability but there is a learning curve involved with shooting Iphone portraits that few "mobile snappers" will take the time to apply LOL if you don't learn how apple is programming their cameras, you'll never get quality shots. i use the same way i teach using mirrorless digital. set the camera on full auto and learn what the camera is programmed for in terms of ISO/SS and aperture selection. when you apply this to iphones you will see a MUCH different looking EXIF, but the clues are still there :-) one quick Q : is lidar being used in night portrait mode ? i seem to have read it is not always being applied in every mode, but can't find that source now

That was really useful and I appreciate you doing the split screen. I’ve scoured RU-vid and I’ve seen nobody do a tutorial on lighting with the iPhone 12 Pro Max and using studio lights only. Can you do one? Most people are shooting using natural daylight or lowlight with still diffuse natural light. I would be curious to see how well this phone performs under portrait studio types of conditions.

Exactly! I’ve been looking all over RU-vid for the same kind of tutorial. Nobody uses studio lights indoors with the iPhone 12 pro max.

When you say studio lights are you talking like a professional portrait shoot using lights? I could do something like that. I just don’t picture majority of ppl using an iPhone for that. But I guess if ppl request it I could do something like that

@@LeeZavitz Well not the super professional lights but the typical three point light system they teach you, a key light, a fill light and the backlight. These kinds of lights in a studio...I’m curious if the iPhone can take great shots either in portrait mode or standard photo mode using these and understating any gotchas. I realize that professional portrait photographers wouldn’t use anything but their DSLR’s for certain shots but I would think the iPhone 12 could handle pretty decent shots and hoping, without daylight.

interesting video. I have a 6S and I'm considering upgrading to a 12 Pro (not Max, it's too big). or I might settle for the SE 2 because like you said in the video - an iPhone can't replace a dslr.

If you take pics with a real camera there’s no point in having a pro or pro max. That’s my personal opinion. My main phone is the iPhone 12

Whoa! The yellow light on the model's face WAS yellow! Your brain doesn't see that light, though. That would the case with any camera, not just the iPhone. It's a feature, not a bug. A traditional camera used for that shot would not even out the light and dark areas, as an iPhone does. Either the side of her face in the yellow light would be blown out, or the shadowed side of her face would be very dark. Also, it's difficult to totally stop motion of blowing hair with a traditional camera, too, unless the camera is using a high ISO, with consequent digital noise. Night mode on the iPhone and on mirrorless cameras will fire off multiple high ISO photos, find the noise in each of them, remove the noise and sharpen the photo.

ProRaw doesn’t do portrait mode or night portrait mode in this case

@@LeeZavitz ah that’s right. I guess a workaround would be shooting in ProRAW and then using Focos to get the portrait look. That way you get both.

Thanks for your informative videos. At Min 2:14 were you changed the fstop after the shot was taken? You can change the depth of field as an edit?

Yep you have been able to change the Fstop for awhile now in portrait mode

It’s not really the f-stop. It is just adjusting the simulation to look like a changed f-stop.

Okay I’m only halfway through the video but I’m wondering why didn’t you use the exposure compensation or the exposure slider before you snapped the photo? This will lower the ISO and lower the shadows to make it more DSLR like. You do it during day time shots. Why didn’t you try it here in low light. It even works better for me when trying to do astrophotography using the native camera

I wish there was a way to actually adjust iso. I did use it but I guess I didn’t really show a screen cap of me using it in the video. The last shots in brighter streets I lowered it. But a lot of times if you use exposure comp it seems to favour the shutter speed instead. I think it’s cuz Apple really leans into their computational stuff and does noise reduction after.

So Stoic Lee done, nice vid. I liked the Apple pro raw too. Question for ya, somewhat unrelated but could really use some advice. I need a gimbal for my damn XT3, a hand held nightmare. I’m betting against DJI and goin with the weebil S. Looks like it packs down nicer + is a lot cheaper. I know I’ll need a follow focus servo. For an extra $290CAD I can get the tramitter kit. But... how good is that transmitters? Worth it? Any wiser options? Do you think it’s wiser to put $290 towards something like Tilta Nucleus-Nano? And maybe buy an atomos ninja V and plug rather than waste time with image transmission via phone? Pls help thanks!

A real monitor is usually better than adding a transmitter right beside your phone. It’s pretty good but some latency. Nice thing with a monitor you can use it for a lot of different things not just on a gimbal. That said it’s your money and you put it where you think It’ll benefit you best. I would recommend the shinobi over the ninjaV if it’s just for a monitor. It’s way lighter

Sorry for the late comment. You did not specify what lens you used, but night portrait default to the tele lens. In night mode the tele lens is NOT used but instead the main (26mm) lens is selected with a 2.5x digital zoom. You did not mention this? I am surprised that you used a digital zoom?

Buddy I have used so many mobile cameras and professional cameras. I think these shots are great for a mobile camera and you kept on complaining you need to send off the yellow light and there was a pink yellow light from neon . Only way is to off that back light bulbs 😅. Images get blur in motion and since her hair was flying sometimes it would be hard to get a good pic because the shutter speed don’t work much on portraits. I own a iPhone 12 Pro Max and I can surely say that it has the best night portrait modes than any other mobile camera.

Watch Mrwhosetheboss ''i switched to iPhone'' And go to Mrwhosetheboss video of camera comparison of S21 ultra vs iPhone 12 pro max. S21 ultra won due to cool features but mostly unnecessary like superzoom...their supersteady loses a lot of details and smoothing lots of details makes it more look fake...the color tones are also so faje like skin tones. In that video, go to 7:10 to 8:15...you'll see why iPhone 12 pro max is so much better since color closest to what our eyes see is much more valuable than superzoom and all but fake skin tones and bad cokors of night shots in Samsung. Apple ISP is awesome and has lots of rooms of improvement.

I’m kind of confused when and where to use night mode I tried using it tonight on the 12 promax in a completely dark room in a house picture seemed a little fuzzy or Blur I thought you’re supposed to come out crystal clear? Or is this night mode thing supposed to get used with lighting but at least lowlight not a complete dark room???

Depends on how much light you have. You also have to hold super still because it’s a long exposure. The more still you hold the camera the sharper it will be

If you are into photography, go for the 12Pro or 12Pro max. Apple ProRAW is only available on the Pros. Build quality of the Pros is superior as well. Had my 12Pro since launch, absolutely love it

@@vaibz753 there are youtube tutorials for that like turning off smart hdr then going PRO RAW then editting on Lightroom esp temperature and noise reduction.
