I’ve tried so many ways with so many Apple leather cases and I’ve found that just using the phone normally creates a really nice patina on Apple leather in about 3 months. The only time I actually “modify” the cases now is when the stickiness starts about a week into using a leather case I will wipe it one time with an alcohol wipe then continue on using it normally. They age well this way.
I’ve been rocking the umber case for a few days now. I really like the color in person, even if it doesn’t patina. I hope it does though! I took the alcohol wipe that came with the screen protector to wipe the case a bit. Beyond that, I hope it does the rest on it’s own. I hate getting to rough with a new case.
Hello. Try like this. With 1000 fine sandpaper, remove the paint. Then rub the leather of the case with hard beeswax. Then rub the skin of the cover with a rag, until hot. It will be very cool!
I’ve loved my product red leather apple cases especially when they patina. I haven’t been able to get them the last couple years so kinda sad. Gonna try the silicon case again this year but might try this next year on a leather case! Great video man :)
Sand paper is clearly the superior way to go about it. Thanks a lot for all of the experiments! I might be getting the iPhone 14 Pro Max soon, as my iPhone 7 Plus just died. Been rocking the Saddle Brown leather case since day one (early 2017), and I was very shocked to learn of Apple's new "protective coat"... That being said, if I do choose to go for another leather case, it'll be for a colorful one to spice things up (so a brown one is out of the question, meaning that Andar and the likes are a no-go for me), and I've been scouting the web to see if someone has bothered going through the same procedure as you have for the Ink leather case, cause I'm curious to see what it would look like with patina. According to people, and from the pics I've seen, the purple illustration on the Ink leather case package is misleading, as it appears to be blue (and not purple - edited the typo), but it still makes a nice fit. I can assume that right after sand-papering, it'll look brighter, but after a while (patina), it'll look way darker than its original form, meaning close to black? Just an educated guess, but if that's right, then I'd probably pass. Not feeling like rocking a ~black case for the majority of the time. Do you happen/plan to test it yourself, by any chance?
Thanks for your thoughts! I agree with you that it most likely will look black after the coating is gone on the Ink case. Currently I’m interested in the cases from Mujjo, will see if I can compare it to for example Apples Umber that I use now. Sorry I have no plabs on getting the Ink case ☹️.
after watching your videos i decided against getting another apple leather case as my california poppy iphone 12 case got horrible *red* stress patina on the edges but nowhere else, and these newer cases sound like more of the same unless you force the patina. have pre-ordered a bullstrap case which im looking forward to. really appreciate your videos!
I ended up going with a company called bull strap for my iPhone 13 pro. I’ve just become so disappointed with Apple leather cases as of late that I’m not sure whether it’s the dying process they’re using or the leather who knows but I feel like I just purchased a leather painted case, hopefully for these iPhone 14 lineups these ones just have such a light coating that it will infuse with the leather overtime and patina nicely. If not guys, you need to check a bull strap a little pricey, but the leather is phenomenal and a patinas so nicely. Oh and once again video is top notch and thank you for your insights to these new cases !!!

I want to apply it for my apple watch strap. Is it possible for leather link with same way? Umber color. It has the same shit problem with iphone leather case. My strap is look horrible now😢
The problem of the ugly patina appeared in the cases of the iPhone 5 and disappeared in the cases of the iPhone 7 to the iPhone 11, and in the iPhone 12, 13 and 14 it returned again and I think the reason is the edges of the iPhone, because the edges are similar between the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 12, 13 and 14.
Yeah that can be the case, but something more must be at play too I think. For example the iPhone 11 Pro Saddle brown patinad very evenly even on the flat backside. That never happened to my iPhone 12 Pro Saddle back :(.
I think the answer is you're both right. I speculate that Apple decided a less treated leather would work less well with the hard edges of the iPhone 5/5S/SE and the 12-14, and changed the leather to a more treated version - as you suggest in the video. Which sucks because treated leather is characterless, too perfect when new...and when it ages looks terrible. Just like Cole Haan shoes, same crap. I just don't bother with Apple Leather cases any more. I think the best case maker for the current generation is probably Dutch company Decoded. While I haven't owned one of their iPhone cases long term, the one I checked out seemed more natural out of the box.
I have 13 pro Wisteria leather case (purple) and while it looked beautifully designed and pretty the first couple months, it then became HORRIBLE. At the edges, it's not patina - just the whole purple color worn off, revealing black leather underneath. Maybe it's better with browns.
Oh yeah thats no fun ☹️ I think the same will happen to a brown but maybe not as noticable. This just seems to be how the newer Apple Leather cases fare.
Hey do you have an update? I bought a Midnight Apple Leather Case as was broken hearted when i heard about the coating.. I’ve removed it with alcohol wipes hoping this will age.

Yeah I must admit, this on turned out alot greasier then I wanted. My current case has gotten it’s coating of paint removed and the patina it is getting is just from my useage. Which is alot more even and how normal leather patina looks.
Forced patina always looks bad because of the fake “genuine leather” which low grade leather with a machine pressed in pebbling to give it a fake grain and then sprayed with a plasticky coating. Full grain waxed leather is the only way to fly.
